Annihilation of Doubt

First, what is doubt (Bharam-

Our Mayaic, instinctive, deluded, or conditioned mind has a way of casting shadows over the natural radiance of the Inner Light (Jot, Mool…). Doubt (Bharam-ਭਰਮ) is the byproduct of the Mayaic intellect’s (Budhi) inability to cope with the Light.

When we depend on Mayaic intellect, reasoning, or memories for meaningful answers, the Mayaic mind (ਮਾਇਕੀ ਮਨ) will break down in doubt (Bharam-ਭਰਮ). The conditioned mind is a great trickster and a liar. It gives rise to false self-identifications with the time-bound consciousness ( body identity or body consciousness), resulting in forgetfulness of the Light (Joti-Svaroopa…).

So, essentially doubt leads to negative thoughts, negative decisions, negative actions, negative tendencies, and, of course, negative reactions – the Saakat or Manmukh lifestyle. For example, the Gurbani says everything is within, but, on account of doubts, we keep searching outside!

: Those within whose mind is the disease of ego (Haumai – ਹਉਮੈ), those self-willed (Manmukhs), the evil beings (ਬਿਕਾਰੀ ਬੰਦੇ – corrupt people), are deluded by doubt (sggs 301).
:  Sabh kichhu ghar mahi…  (sggs 102).

Doubt (Bharam-ਭਰਮ) is the root cause of our Haumai (false ego-sense, ਦੀਰਘ ਰੋਗ), repeated suffering and sorrow of the Jeeva

Thus, doubt (Bharam-ਭਰਮ) is a crushing load on the soul. This human life is an opportunity to unload ourselves. We have the choice – either we can chose to carry these loads around longer and keep suffering, or we can chose to end here and now.

: Household bondage (ਘਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਬੰਧਨ – snare…) is Maya’s entanglement. Egotism, attachment, doubt and fear are loads. (sggs 292).

It brings us to this question: How can we eradicate doubt (Bharam-ਭਰਮ)? The Gurbani tells us exactly how to do that.

The Gurbani assures us that doubt (Bharam-ਭਰਮ) can be destroyed by the Grace of the Gur-Giaan (by “ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ”: ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ-Divine Knowledge of the Gurbani…):

:  (With the Gur-Giaan) the egg of doubt (shell of doubt-ਭਰਮ ਦਾ ਪੜਦਾ) has burst; the mind is Enlightened (Illumined-ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ, Aatm-Giaan…). (sggs 1002).
: Gur parasaadi bharam kaa naasu (sggs 294).
: Nirmal baanee bharamu chukaaiaa (sggs 221).

In other words, it’s only the explosion of the bomb of the Gur-Giaan (Wisdom or Bibek-Budgi of the Gurbani…) that can lift the doubt-ridden mind into the Light (Jot, Mool…), destroying the fortress of doubt (Bharam-ਭਰਮ), Maya, duality, deluded mind, ignorance, Haumai, Bikaars…

: Make the Divine Love the fuse (guncotton, torch …), and Surati (ਸੁਰਤਿ – Chit, Awareness, ਮੂਲ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜੀ ਹੋਈ…) the Havaaee (ਹਵਾਈ-moving in the air, ਹਵਾਈ ਤੋਪ, rocket …); (then) actuate the bomb of Spiritual Wisdom (Divine Knowledge, Aatam-Giaan …). In Sahaj Avastaa (Natural state of Being, ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ, ਗਿਆਨ ਅਵਸਤਾ…), lit the fire of Brahm Giaan, and conquer (the fortress) in one shot. (sggs 1161).

In nutshell, through the earnestsearch (ਖੋਜ), Shabad-Vichaar, the Light of Understanding (Spiritual Wisdom, Aatam-Giaan, ਸੂਝ-ਬੂਝ…) must enter in the dark corners and recesses of the ignorant or deluded mind!

: Behold, O brother! (When) the storm of Spiritual Wisdom comes, (then) the thatched hut of doubt gets blown away; supported by bonds of Maya (this thatched hut of doubt) cannot continue to remain behind (the storm of Spiritual Wisdom or Aatam-Giaan). ||1||Pause|| (sggs 331).

The light of Understanding makes both Mann and Chitt (ਮੱਨ-ਚਿੱਤ) join together, making them One. Making them One is the highest aim of life. Their Oneness is the ultimate goal of life. For this to happen, both must be established in Sach (ਸਚ-Truth) – so long Sach (ਸਚ) is there both are One. Sach (ਸਚ) is the glue that joins them into one. Doubt (Bharam-ਭਰਮ) and falsehood split them into two.

: Removing doubt of the mind, contemplate the One with singular mind. (sggs 47).

What happens when doubt (Bharam-ਭਰਮ) is eradicated?

:  Eternal Sukh (ਸੁਖ-Happiness, Peace, Joy…) is attained when doubts are dispelled. (sggs 114). : Chhootai sansaa miti jaahi ukh: With the eradication of doubt, Dukha (ਦੁਖ-suffering, sorrow…) is eliminated. (sggs 343).
: With the eradication of my doubt, (my) fear ran away. (sggs 655).

We routinely hear, read or sing: “Anand Bhaiaa Meree Maae…” But, the Gurbani tells us that Anand (Bliss…) can only be Realized after doubt (Bharam-ਭਰਮ) has departed – after doubt departs, what is left over is the Eternal Bliss – “Paramaanandaa” (ਪਰਮਾਨੰਦਾ)!

: Gaiaa bharamu rahiaa paramaanandaa (sggs 327).
: Bharame bhoolee re jai chandaa… (sggs 526).
