At the time of Guru Nanak’s arrival (1469), two ideologies (ਵਿਚਾਰ ਧਾਰਾ) were dominant in India — (1) Brahmin (Pujaaree-clergy) influence, madness of belief in caste system (Jaat Paat) in the society, idol worship in temples and related rituals (karamkaand) etc, and (2) Muslim influence in which Islamic Sharia and forced conversion of people into Islam was dominant. The thought of living an independent life with self-respect and and letting others live the same was missing in both. He traveled to various Hindu and Muslim places of pilgrimage and debunked the priests (Pujaaree) and Qazis etc for misleading and fleecing the gullible:
- ਕਾਦੀ ਕੂੜੁ ਬੋਲਿ ਮਲੁ ਖਾਇ ॥ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਜੀਆ ਘਾਇ ॥ ਜੋਗੀ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਅੰਧੁ ॥ ਤੀਨੇ ਓਜਾੜੇ ਕਾ ਬੰਧੁ ॥੨॥: The clergy of the Muslim faith was corrupt, the Brahmin was murderous and the Yogi Un-Enlightened. These three (clergy) had become the root cause for the spiritual wreckage and desolation that mankind had come to endure. (sggs 662).
- ਅੰਧੀ ਰਯਤਿ ਗਿਆਨ ਵਿਹੂਣੀ ਭਾਹਿ ਭਰੇ ਮੁਰਦਾਰੁ ॥ : (Because of) deprived of the Divine Knowledge, people (as if have become mentally) blind (ignorant), and are engaged in gratifying their fire (of desires, Maya…). (sggs 469).
- ਕਾਜੀ ਹੋਏ ਰਿਸਵਤੀ ਵਢੀ ਲੈ ਕੈ ਹਕ ਗਵਾਈ । : Qazis have become bribable (crook, criminal…), they take bribes and have lost their high regards and position. (BhaI Gurdas, Vaar1, Pauri 30).
It was never the intention of the Sikh Gurus that one type of
Brahmin/Pandit Pujaaree class should come to an end and a new type of Sikh Pujaaree class should replace it.
By nature, the self-serving Pujaaree class has always been very corrupt, cunning and deceptive. Since they know that a person is not born foolish, but made so by education, the Pujaaree clique knows how to emotionally blackmail the gullible masses, brain wash them, keep them sink deep in fear and greed etc.
Guru Nanak saw the Hindus suffering in these conditions. Through example and precept, he tried to direct the people towards a True, Unique, Revolutionary, practical and universal spiritual Way of life, to check them from worshipping every Tom, Dick and Harry. He instructed them to Remember only One Timeless Creator (One Akal Purakh). and yearn for Him alone in their mind.
- ਏਕੁ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਏਕੋ ਮਨ ਆਹਿ ॥ : (sggs 289).
‘Sikh‘ literally means a lifelong learner or student (ਸਿਖਿਆਰਥੀ) of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib (SGGS). Therefore ‘Sikhi‘ is learning the Wisdom (Giyan, Sikhia, Bibek) SGGS, and then living it in daily life (Gurmukh mindset):
- ਸਿਖੀ ਸਿਖਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥ ਨਦਰੀ ਕਰਮਿ ਲਘਾਏ ਪਾਰਿ ॥ : Sikhi is contemplation on Guru’s teaching (Instructions, Wisdom, Counsel, Guide, Upadesh, Giyan, Bibek) and acting on it. Being blessed by the Grace of the Guru’s teaching one then crosses the ocean of worldly temptations and their corrupting influences (Bhav Saagar). (sggs 465).
Thus according to the SGGS, the real ‘Sikhi‘ of Guru Nanak is a Unique Way of life based on the Enlightening Message contained in the SGGS — BECOMING THE GURBANI, HERE AND NOW!
But, today, what we see out there is NOT the Sikhi of Guru Nanak or the SGGS. Although on the outside, there is a stamp of Sikhi, but inside, the thinking (Soch-ਸੋਚ) is that of pre-1469 — Bipar-Vaad.
Simply put, the Gurmat or Sikhi of Guru Nanak has been deliberately and purposely altered in a shape and form which was not intended to be and which was rejected by our Gurus.
Sikh Pujaaree class — the freeloading Deraa-Vaad Baabaas (ਵੇਹਲੜ) and their trained Granthis, Parcharaks, Ragis, Dhadees, Jathedars etc pullulating worldwide — seem to talk about spirituality, BUT IN FACT, they promote new rituals, worship-recitals, show-dresses learnt/copied from the rituals of the Pujaaree-Vaad that has been rejected by Guru Nanak in no uncertain terms. They preach this anti-Gurmat stuff under the name of Sikhi. They talk about Naam-Simran, but they seem to have no understanding (purposely or otherwise) of either Naam or Simran as taught by the Gurbani enshrined within the SGGS.
In short, the Sikh Pujaaree class is different from Brahmins/Pandits in Baanaa (robes) ONLY, NOT in thinking (Soch-ਸੋਚ).
Sikhi that was given to us by our Gurus was ‘Nirmal‘ (UNIQUE, one of its kind), Pure, and Revolutionary.
- ਮਾਰਿਆ ਸਿਕਾ ਜਗਤ੍ਰਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਪੰਥ ਚਲਾਇਆ । : In the world of spirituality, the Way (of spirituality or Sikhi) of Nanak has its Trademark in its Uniqueness as being ‘Nirmal‘ (pure — free from contamination/impurities of the existing pre-1469 beliefs). (Bhai Gurdas Ji, Vaar1, Pauri 45).
- ਸਬਦਿ ਜਿਤੀ ਸਿਧਿ ਮੰਡਲੀ ਕੀਤੋਸੁ ਅਪਣਾ ਪੰਥੁ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ । : Through (the power of the) Shabad (Guru Nanak) won over the group of Siddhs and propounded his altogether new/Unique (‘Nirala‘) ‘Panth‘ or way of life. (Bhai Gurdas Ji, Vaar1, Pauri 31).
However, the ‘Nirmal’ Sikhi of Guru Nanak stands distorted and tainted by the self-serving Pujaaree trotting the globe, which is empty and devoid of Gurbani’s understanding. These self-serving empty type (ਖਾਲੀ-Khaalee or ਥੋਥਾ-Thothaa) are driven by their greed, Biparvaad thinking (Soch-ਸੋਚ), revenue creating (ਰੋਟੀਆ ਕਾਰਨ) to support their freeloading lifestyle (ਵੇਹਲੜ), expand their flock of ignorant followers for return business – a business of no investment, no loss, no education, and so on.
The Gurbani has been corrupted through Vedic and Puranic interpretations and translations by them. They have have brought the UNIQUE spirituality of Guru Nanak down to a self-serving business transaction (‘ਧੰਧਾ-Dhandhaa‘) and made it a Sikhi of ritualized religious dogmas, external symbols, religious paraphernalia, religious robes, anti-Gurmat rituals or Karamkaand etc.
- ਆਪਨ ਸੁਆਇ ਕਰਹਿ ਬਹੁ ਬਾਤਾ ਤਿਨਾ ਕਾ ਵਿਸਾਹੁ ਕਿਆ ਕੀਜੈ ॥੬॥ : One who talks excessively but to suit ones own interests; how can such a person be trusted? ||6|| (sggs 1326).
- ਗਿਆਨੀ ਧਿਆਨੀ ਬਹੁ ਉਪਦੇਸੀ ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਸਗਲੋ ਧੰਧਾ ॥ ਕਹਿ ਕਬੀਰ ਇਕ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਇਆ ਜਗੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਅੰਧਾ ॥੨॥੧॥੧੬॥੬੭॥ : Many ‘Giyanis’ (scholars etc.) discuss knowledge, many ‘Dhiaanis‘ sit in Samadhi (meditation etc.), many give sermons; (but in fact) these are professions for earning livelihood in the world. Kabeer says – without Awareness of NAAM (Wisdom, Virtues…), this world is gone (mentally) blind in Maya (temptations). ||2||1||16||67|| (sggs 338).
- ਚਿਟੇ ਜਿਨ ਕੇ ਕਪੜੇ ਮੈਲੇ ਚਿਤ ਕਠੋਰ ਜੀਉ ॥ ਤਿਨ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਊਪਜੈ ਦੂਜੈ ਵਿਆਪੇ ਚੋਰ ਜੀਉ ॥ ਮੂਲੁ ਨ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਆਪਣਾ ਸੇ ਪਸੂਆ ਸੇ ਢੋਰ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥ : Their clothes are white (beautiful religious robes) but their conscience is cruel and filthy (full of vices — they look holy or Mahaatamaa on the outside only). Their minds don’t acquire Naam (Giyan-Wisdom, Virtues…); engrossed in duality they cheat people (i.e. their external appearance is only pretense-Pakhand to cheat people). They do not Understand their own Mool (Source, Jot Saroop…); that’s why they are fools with animal intelligence ||3|| (sggs 751).
- ਬਗਾ ਬਗੇ ਕਪੜੇ ਤੀਰਥ ਮੰਝਿ ਵਸੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥ ਘੁਟਿ ਘੁਟਿ ਜੀਆ ਖਾਵਣੇ ਬਗੇ ਨਾ ਕਹੀਅਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥੩॥ : The hypocrite people (Pakhandee-Pujaaree etc.) who wear holy garbs and dwell in places of pilgrimage (so called Teerath) like the white feathered herons on the banks of rivers. Like herons swallow the fish, these hypocritical people throttle the innocent human beings, therefore, they cannot be called pure or virtuous (i.e. they are crafty and scheming inside). ||3|| (sggs 729).
Having said that, the Pujaaree’s Sikhi is anti-Gurbani. Guru Nanak Sahib was against the man-made houses of God — temples, mosques, churches, Pilgrimage locations (so called Tirath) etc. built by the Pujaaree. Also, while the entire SGGS is opposed to religious paraphernalia and symbols, however the Pujaaree has made religious paraphernalia and symbols the basis of all Sikhi!
The Sikhi of Guru Nanak teaches us that our mind (Conscience) is the temple and it is the reservoir of the divine Wisdom/Virtues where one has to bathe in daily — live it in daily life.
The empty type (ਖਾਲੀ-Khaalee or ਥੋਥਾ-Thothaa) clergy is either illiterate, ignorant or dishonest due to greed and vested interests, or fugitive from life (ਜਿੰਦਗੀ ਤੋਂ ਭਗੌੜਾ), or having brush with the law, or without any meaningful education to earn an honest living and contribute to the society’s development and upliftment.
On the whole, the current Gurdwara system of the Pujaaree’s Sikhi is contrary to the ideology of the Gurmat of Guru Nanak. At the end of the day, everything is business and politics of self-centered and self-serving people.
All in all, the GURUS DID NOT CREATE Pujaaree-Vaad (priesthood or clergy) in Sikhi. This is why Pujaaree-Vaad has no place in Sikhi of Guru Nanak or SGGS. Because in his Sikhi we are all brothers (Bhai Bhai-ਭਾਈ ਭਾਈ) or equal — NO Jathedaar, NO sant, NO high or low etc.
The Pujaaree-Vaad we see in Sikhi pullulating in the world is self-appointed. They likely started during the time of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and British Rule in India. In order to easily control and rule Punjab, British also created and used Deras and Baabaas to divide Sikhs. If you recall the history, General Dyer, who is infamous for giving order for Jallianwala Bagh massacre, was given Siropa by the priests of the Golden Temple!
In general, Pujaaree-systems of organized religions are the product of politics, rulers, kings, emperors etc. for their own vested interests. This is the reason — concerned with their own vested interests — they all work in concert, scratch each others back!
The Gurbani demands Discarding of the clergy system
Clearly, there is NO concept of Pujaaree-Vaad in Sikhi of Guru Nanak! In fact the Gurbani offers a stinging critique of the clergy-initiated corruption. Specifically the Bhagats of the SGGS are particularly strident in taking on the clergy (the Pundit, Brahmin,
Bippar) in exposing their corruption and misdeeds. The objective of the clergy is:
- To create the ‘us versus them’ separation where none existed within spirituality.
- To adulterate original spiritual philosophy of Gurmat by replacing it with cooked up and self-serving mythological narratives (Sakhi-stories).
- To convert spiritual philosophy into religious dogmas and put itself in the center of these cooked up religious dogma.
- To control adherents of the spiritual seekers through fake narratives of fear and reward in the fabricated afterlife.
- To maintain freeloading (ਵੇਹਲੜ) lifestyle – make a living off the misled and confused followers largely though the performance of complex and unrelated Karamkaand (rituals) and put itself as the custodians of these rituals.
- To become the defenders and promotors of the corrupted pre-1469 spirituality .
- To fabricate ‘God’, Sach khand etc separate from man and then place themselves as middlemen (agents, ਵਿਚੋਲੇ) of the concocted ‘God’ who is bribable, subordinate and and submissive to the Pujaare (clergy).
The clergy-created corruption can be seen to have taken place in Skhi along these basic lines. The Pujaaree has reduced Guru Nanak’s Unique (‘Nirmal‘) and Revolutionary spirituality to rituals (Karamkaand), fake stories (ਗੱਪ ਕਹਾਣੀਆਂ), religious paraphernalia, religious robes, pilgrim (Teerath Yatra), Pakhand, ritual bathing (Ishnaan), Pujaaree-Vaad, chanting etc. that have been rejected and discarded by Guru Nanak.
Aptly, the SGGS teaches DISCARDING of the Pujaaee system! Here is the addict (ਫੈਸਲਾ) of the SGGS:
- ਪੰਡਿਤ ਮੁਲਾਂ ਜੋ ਲਿਖਿ ਦੀਆ ॥ ਛਾਡਿ ਚਲੇ ਹਮ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਲੀਆ ॥੩॥ : ALL that the Pandit and Mullah Clergy have prescribed or presented to us, I have DISCARDED (while walking on the Path of Spirituality). I DISCARD IT ALL and have ACCEPTED NOTHING at all. ||3|| (sggs 1159).
- ਹਮਰਾ ਝਗਰਾ ਰਹਾ ਨ ਕੋਊ ॥ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਮੁਲਾਂ ਛਾਡੇ ਦੋਊ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ : (Bhagat Kabeer Ji says) I have no conflict in my mind whatsoever — no struggle within me anymore. (I have achieved this state because) I have discarded all the claims of the clergy (Pujaaree). |1|| Pause || (sggs 1158).
Therefore overhaul of our belief system and psyche is necessary to allow the real Message of the Gurbani (SGGS) to find space within our minds.
- ਰਿਦੈ ਇਖਲਾਸੁ ਨਿਰਖਿ ਲੇ ਮੀਰਾ ॥ ਆਪੁ ਖੋਜਿ ਖੋਜਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਕਬੀਰਾ ॥੪॥੭॥ : (The Outcome of discarding of the clergy is that) I am able to fill my cleansed mind with pure love for my beloved Creator and fill it with love of the Creator; enabling me to know and search my ownself Within the self and bring about Realization of the Creator Within. ॥4॥7॥ (sggs 1159).
In a nutshell, the Pujaaree’s Sikhi has nothing to do with the ‘Soch‘ (thinking, Wisdom, ਵਿਚਾਰਧਾਰਾ…) of Guru Nanak or the Gurmat Wisdom of the SGGS!
The Pujaaree (clergy) stirs emotions of people with made-up stories (i.e. Sakhi-ਸਾਖੀ) rather than Awakening their intelligence (Bibek Budh) and reasoning with the Wisdom of the SGGS.
The Pujaaree’s Sikhi is a Sikhi of other granths (other than SGGS) — Gur Blias Patshahi 6, Gurpartap Suraj Parkash, Panth Parkash, Mahima Parkash (prose), Mahima Parkash (poetic), Bansavali Nama, Sikhan Di Bhagatmal, Twarikh Guru Khalsa, Sri Guru Nanak Chamatkar, Asht Guru Chamatkar, Kalgidhar Chamatkar, Panth Parkash, Prachin Path Parkash, Perchian, Guru Kian Sakhian, Gurblias Patshahi 10, Prem Sumarag, Meharban Vali Janam Sakhi, Bhai Mani Singh Vali Janam Sakhi, B-40 Janam Sakhi, Puratan Janam Sakhi, Pathar Day Chapay Vali Janam Sakhi, Bhai Bala Janam Sakhi, Rahat Namas (35 in total), Sarab Loh Granth, Bachitar Natak Granth…
These so called granths full of all that which has been rejected by the Sikh Gurus are total contradiction to the Gurmat of Guru Nanak — fake and laughable Karaamaatee stories (Sakhi-ਸਾਖੀ), falsehood (ਝੂਠ), embellished history with imaginary facts along the lines of Brahminical literature, pilgrimage (bathing at Teerath...), idol worshiping, mythology, religious dress (robes), religious symbols; Pakhand), fear, greed, mental blindness (ਅੰਧ-ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸ਼), madness of Jaat Paat, discord or disunion etc — exact opposite of the Message (Upadesh) of the SGGS!
The content of these granths (other than SGGS) clearly suggests they are written by the opponents of the Sikh Gurus — Brahmins in Sikh masks to destroy Guru Nanak’s Unique and Revolutionary ‘Soch‘ (thinking), thus downplay its importance.
All this useless Karamkaand has been totally rejected by Guru Nanak or the Gurmat Wisdom of the SGGS. This nonsense can NOT make one a Dhaarmic person or a Guruward (ਗੁਰੂ ਵਾਲਾ i.e. Gurmukh).
- ਫਾਹੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਮਲੂਕੀ ਵੇਸੁ ॥ ਹਉ ਠਗਵਾੜਾ ਠਗੀ ਦੇਸੁ ॥ ਖਰਾ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਭਾਰੁ ॥ ਧਾਣਕ ਰੂਪਿ ਰਹਾ ਕਰਤਾਰ ॥੩॥ : The people sitting in the shrines are dressed as angles/ascetics (i.e. dressed in religious robes, symbols etc.). But their deceitful mind’s focus is on defrauding or trapping people. These big thugs are looting the people. They pretend to be wise. But they carry too much load of sins on their heads. Such righteous looking people are very cruel. ||3|| (sggs 24).
None can deny the fact that the fanatic Pujaare did NOT like Guru Nanak, because he refused to wear ‘Janaeoo’ (ਜਨੇਊ ). From that point on, the ten Nanaks struggled against the Pujaaree.
The current Pujaaree-Vaad in Sikhi seen in Gurdwaras worldwide seems to be the followers of the opponents of the ten Nanaks. This includes Sri Chand and and Lakhmi Das (both sons of Guru Nanak), Daasu and Daatu (the sons of Guru Angad Dev), Mohan and Mohree (the sons of Guru Amar Das), Prithi Chand (the eldest son of Guru Ram Das), Ram Rai (the eldest son of Guru Har Rai), Dhir Mall (the elder son of Baba Gurditta and a grandson of Guru Hargobind) etc. All these are mentioned for defiance and rejection of the Gurmat.
- ਸਚੁ ਜਿ ਗੁਰਿ ਫੁਰਮਾਇਆ ਕਿਉ ਏਦੂ ਬੋਲਹੁ ਹਟੀਐ ॥ ਪੁਤ੍ਰੀ ਕਉਲੁ ਨ ਪਾਲਿਓ ਕਰਿ ਪੀਰਹੁ ਕੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਮੁਰਟੀਐ ॥ ਦਿਲਿ ਖੋਟੈ ਆਕੀ ਫਿਰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਬੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਭਾਰੁ ਉਚਾਇਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਛਟੀਐ ॥ : Why should we distance ourselves from accepting the truth about the decision, which Guru Nanak had issued regarding his successor – that Lahna is the next Guru. But his sons (of Guru Nanak’s sons: Sri Chand and Lakhmi Das) did not obey his word to accept the new Guru and turned their backs – turned away from the new Guru. With evil hearts – evil thinking – they (Guru Nanak’s sons) remained rebels carrying the heavy load (of vices/Bikaar, false ego-sense…). (sggs 967).
- ਉਲਟੀ ਗੰਗ ਵਹਾਈਓਨ ਗੁਰ ਅੰਗਦ ਸਿਰ ਉਪਰ ਧਾਰਾ ॥ ਪੁਤੀਂ ਕੌਲ ਨ ਪਾਲਿਆ ਮਨ ਖੋਟੇ ਆਕੀ ਨਸਿਆਰਾ ॥ : (Guru Nanak) performed an extraordinary practice in installing Angad as his successor Guru. His sons (i.e., sons of Guru Nanak: Sri Chand and Lakhmi Das) defied his spirituality on account of their malice, and rose to rebellion and desertion. (Bhai Gurdas Ji, Vaar 1, Pauree 38.).
- ਮੋਹਣੁ ਕਮਲਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਚਉਬਾਰਾ ਮੋਹਰੀ ਮਨਾਇਆ ॥ ਮੀਣਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਪਿਰਥੀਆ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਤੋਂਡਕ ਬਰਲੁ ਚਲਾਇਆ ॥ : Mohan (son of Guru Amardas) got insane (ਝੱਲਾ, ਬੇ-ਅਕਲ…) and Mohree (the second son) lived in a lofty house and started getting served by the people. Prithy Chand (son of Guru Ramdas) came out as dissembling scoundrel and using his oblique nature spread his mental sickness all round. (Bhai Gurdas Ji, Vaar 26, Paurhee 33).
Nobody can deny the fact that due to the Pujaaree-Vaad being hostile to the Sikh Gurus, the 6th Guru Hargobind Sahib left in his youth the ‘AkalBunga – ਅਕਾਲਬੁੰਗਾ’ he constructed at Darbar Sahib and settled at Kiratpur Sahib and never came back.
After that, NEITHER the 7th Guru Sahib, NOR the 8th Guru Sahib, NOR the 9th Guru Sahib, NOR the 10th Guru Sahib entered Darbar Sahib! Please note that once when the 9th Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib tried to enter Darbar Sahib, the hostile Pujaaree did not allow him to enter!
Hence, with an example of a Brahmin Pujaaree, Guru Nanak teaches those who think they have become approved or better by carrying on all this nonsense without any positive change or Virtues (ਗੁਣ) in life:
- ਹਿੰਦੂ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਆਵੈ ॥ ਸੂਤੁ ਜਨੇਊ ਪੜਿ ਗਲਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ ਸੂਤੁ ਪਾਇ ਕਰੇ ਬੁਰਿਆਈ ॥ ਨਾਤਾ ਧੋਤਾ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥ : The Hindu (Pujaaree) comes to the house of an (another) Hindu. Reading the scriptures, (Pujaaree) puts the sacred thread around his neck. (Later, after putting on thread, he) does evil deeds. His cleansings and washings (i.e., his all Karamkaand and religious paraphernalia) will not be approved. (sggs 951).
Since the Sikhi of the Pujaaree has nothing to do with the Sikhi of Guru Nanak or the Gurmat Wisdom of the SGGS, efforts of the Pujaaree-Vaad are aimed at reducing the respect of the Wisdom of the SGGS. This is the reason texts like ‘Suraj Parkash’, ‘Gur Bilas Pa. 6’, ‘Bachitar Natak Granth’ etc. have been imposed on the heads of an innocent humanity by the Pujaaree that have own vested interests.
Apparently, the Pujaaree acts as the self-appointed Guru or the ruler of Sikhs!
As soon as they feel their corrupt and freeloading lifestyle of luxury (ਐਸ਼-ਪਰਸਤੀ) threatened from a wise Sikhs, they will issue ‘Fatva‘ against that individual and exclude (ਛੇਕ ਦੇਣਾਂ) him/her from what they call their ‘Panth‘.
Apparently they think they are living in a medieval era of uninterrupted ignorance, not in the 21st century!
Apparently, although our Sikh scholars and leaders live in the 21st century and enjoy the comforts of the 21st century, but the teaching they are giving to their fellow Sikhs is that of medieval era.
For them, the SGGS is a way (ਜਰੀਆ) of making money (ਧੰਧਾ, business…), filling Golak, maintaining their lavish and freeloading lifestyle (ਐਸ਼-ਪਰਸਤੀ). They enslave people’s minds and promote: counterfeit god separate from man, evil deeds (ਮੰਦ ਕਰਤੂਤਾ), hooliganism (ਗੁੰਡਾ ਗਰਦੀ), all which have been rejected in the Gurmat Wisdom of the SGGS etc.
- ਭੈਰਉ ਭੂਤ ਸੀਤਲਾ ਧਾਵੈ ॥ ਖਰ ਬਾਹਨੁ ਉਹੁ ਛਾਰੁ ਉਡਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ ਹਉ ਤਉ ਏਕੁ ਰਮਈਆ ਲੈਹਉ ॥ ਆਨ ਦੇਵ ਬਦਲਾਵਨਿ ਦੈਹਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ ਸਿਵ ਸਿਵ ਕਰਤੇ ਜੋ ਨਰੁ ਧਿਆਵੈ ॥ ਬਰਦ ਚਢੇ ਡਉਰੂ ਢਮਕਾਵੈ ॥੨॥ ਮਹਾ ਮਾਈ ਕੀ ਪੂਜਾ ਕਰੈ ॥ ਨਰ ਸੈ ਨਾਰਿ ਹੋਇ ਅਉਤਰੈ ॥੩॥ ਤੂ ਕਹੀਅਤ ਹੀ ਆਦਿ ਭਵਾਨੀ ॥ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕੀ ਬਰੀਆ ਕਹਾ ਛਪਾਨੀ ॥੪॥ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਗਹੁ ਮੀਤਾ ॥ ਪ੍ਰਣਵੈ ਨਾਮਾ ਇਉ ਕਹੈ ਗੀਤਾ ॥੫॥੨॥੬॥ : (First, see Rahaou verse for the core Message of the Shabad – I have given up all clergy created Gods because) accepting Bhairon as one’s Spiritual object makes one demonic or Bhoot like Bhairon; while accepting the donkey riding Seetla leads one to kick up dust aplenty (just lie Seetla)! ॥1॥ I accept only the One supreme Creator as my Spiritual object; I have given up all clergy-created Gods in exchange. ||1||Rahaou-Pause|| (I have given up all clergy created Gods because) chanting and meditating on Shiv as one’s Spiritual object (the most that one can achieve is this) one take on the bull-riding and drum-beating as Shiv! ॥2॥ (I have given up all clergy created Gods because) worshiping the great female Goddess Parvati causes her worshippers to reincarnate as females (because the worshiper can only become the form of his worshipping object).॥3॥ (I have given up all clergy created Gods, because O Pandit) you also claim that Durga is the original provider of salvation, but when it comes to your own salvation, why haven’t you obtained it (meaning, salvation is not even with Bhavani)? ॥4॥ So, Nam Dev says (O Pandat!) realize the Omnipresent Creator by basing Your spirituality on the spiritual Giyan-Wisdom of the Satguru and taking the Divine Naam (Wisdom / Virtues); (your religious book) Gita also says the same. ॥5॥ (sggs 874).
Guidance from the above Shabad of Bhagat Nam dev is as follows: Bhagat Naam Dev ji has refused to worship Bhairun Jati, Sheetala Devi, Shiva, Durga/Parbati/Mahan Mai/Adi Bhavani etc. Bhagat Nam Dev has not kept any demigods/goddesses for worship, he has given up all of them in exchange for the Omnipresent Creator.
Clearly, their efforts seem to be aimed at ending Guru Nanak’s Unique and Revolutionary Gurmat.
The worse Pandemic of this century (Covid-19) has exposed the Pujaaree’s false claims (ਝੂਠੇ ਦਾਅਵੇ)!
Obviously, they have forgotten or ignored the challenge (ਲਲਕਾਰ) of Bhagat Kabeer Ji to the then Pujaaree-Vaad that had self-installed as the ‘Guru of the world’!
- ਕਬੀਰ ਬਾਮਨੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ ਜਗਤ ਕਾ ਭਗਤਨ ਕਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥ ਅਰਝਿ ਉਰਝਿ ਕੈ ਪਚਿ ਮੂਆ ਚਾਰਉ ਬੇਦਹੁ ਮਾਹਿ ॥੨੩੭॥ : O Kabeer! (Based on the meaningless path of rituals etc.) the Brahmin (Pujaaree) may be the guru of the world out there, but he is not the Guru of Bhagats. That’s because he, the Brahmin, got entangled with the four Vedas and has succumbed to spiritual death. ॥237॥ (sggs 1377).
This is also the challenge of the SGGS to the self-serving Pujaaree-Vaad in Sikhi today as well!
The Pujaaree-Vaad in Sikhi today also want all Sikhs to worship them, follow their preaching (even if it does not conform with the Gurmat), obey any stupid decrees (ਫਤਵਾ) passed by them etc.
Pujaaree’s posturing, imagined self-importance, the delusion of having some privileged position in the universe, are challenged throughout the SGGS.
How fervent is their hatred and how eager they are to hurt or even kill those who questions their actions (ਮੰਦ ਕਰਤੂਤਾ), lies, deception, Karamkaand (rituals), Pakhand, made-up stories, fraud, fake history and fake granths etc.
However the Pujaaree is skillful in enslaving the minds of gullible people and making people fearful and greedy, and keep them as such for return business!
Fear of any kind is considered the most effective method to control and exploit a people. Interesting thing is that the Pujaaree-Vaad creating fear is the very same people who stand to benefit from providing people solutions to their fears!
Pujaare-Vaad is a dangerous swamp from which Guru Nanak Pulled the humanity out. However, the Pujaaree-Vaad has thrown Guru Nanak’s Sikhi back into even much deeper swamp.
Based on their anti-Gurmat stand, the Sikh Pujaaree today is no different then the Qazi, Mulla, Brahmin, Yogi etc., whom the Gurmat Wisdom of the SGGS has logically critiqued, rejected and debunked.
The Pujaaree-Vaad in Sikhi has turned the SGGS into an idol of worshipping similar to Brahmins worshipping their stone idols.
The truth is that the SGGS was given to us for learning Wisdom (Giyan, Bibek, Virtues), NOT to wrap it in designer’s clothing and worship it as an idol, OR read it meaninglessly as in Akhand-Paaths for the sole purpose of making money as done by the Pujaaree-Vaad in all Deraas and Gurdwaras.
History teaches us that the Pujaaree is nobody’s friend or well wisher (ਪੁਜਾਰੀ ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ ਸਕਾ ਨਹੀਂ). The self-serving Pujaaree is neither friend of his fake god nor any Granth he claims to represent. Pujaaree only cares about filling his Golak (free money) and luxurious lifestyle of freeloading.
Pujaaree-Vaad in Sikhi has turned all Gurdwars, historical or otherwise, into dens of mammon-worshippers, fanatics, thugs, anti-Gurmat activities etc. and taken the society back to the medieval age.
Brahminical Soch (thinking) of the Pujaaree-Vaad in Sikhi has infiltrated (intruded) in our Surat (mind, consciousness). Thus they have occupied our brains. As a result, today, Brahminical Pujaaree-Vaad in Sikhi has made us do exactly that which was rejected by Guru Nanak, Bhagats…
Hence, the Pujaaree-Vaad in Sikhi has totally impeded the progress and development (ਵਿਕਾਸ) of the Sikh community at mental level and otherwise.
Fittingly, all 35 contributors of the SGGS rejected and abandoned the Pujaaree-Vaad, and ask us – all Sikhs – to do the same.
Because these 35 saw the folly, shallowness, and filthiness of worldly traditions such as giving/taking Siropa. In Deraas, the self-appointed head of these Deraas give and take their seat (Gaddi-ਗੱਦੀ), fight over it, kill each other over it, and so on.
- ਕੁਲਹਾਂ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਬਾਵਲੇ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਵਡੇ ਨਿਲਜ ॥ ਚੂਹਾ ਖਡ ਨ ਮਾਵਈ ਤਿਕਲਿ ਬੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੈ ਛਜ ॥ ਦੇਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਦੁਆਈ ਸੇ ਮਰਹਿ ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਦੇਨਿ ਸਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਪਈ ਕਿਥੈ ਜਾਇ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥ : Crazy are those people (so called Pir-ਪੀਰ, Sant, Saadh, Deraa-Vaad etc.) who give out ceremonial hats/Kulah to their followers (these crazy people understand that by giving heir hat, he fills the follower with his blessing), and absolutely shameless are those who accept them. (Their condition is like) a mouse who cannot pass through a hole and on top of that it has tied a threshing basket to its tail! All such people who bless others die along with those whom they give these blessings. Nanak, these people do not live in the way of the Hukam (Universal Rule-System-Law of Nature…) and they remain without realizing God Within. (sggs 1286).
Since Guru Nanak labels them as ‘lazy bums’ (‘ਮਖਟੂ’), ‘crazy’ (‘ਬਾਵਲੇ’) and ‘shameless’ (‘ਨਿਲਜ’), they are bent upon destroying his ‘Soch‘ (thinking…). Because Guru Nanak’s Truth hurts and enflame them.
But Guru Nanak knew nothing will be saved remaining silent!
- ਜਿਨਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਕੂੜੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਸਚੁ ਨ ਭਾਵਈ ॥ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਬੋਲੈ ਸਚੁ ਕੂੜਾ ਜਲਿ ਜਾਵਈ ॥ : Truth does not suit those who are permeated by falsehood. If someone speaks the Truth, the false (one) is burnt (irritated). (sggs 646).
- ਕਬੀਰ ਕਸਉਟੀ ਰਾਮ ਕੀ ਝੂਠਾ ਟਿਕੈ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥ ਰਾਮ ਕਸਉਟੀ ਸੋ ਸਹੈ ਜੋ ਮਰਿ ਜੀਵਾ ਹੋਇ ॥੩੩॥ : Kabeer, no false person (one who pretends / Pakhandee) can stand a chance when tested on the touchstone of ‘Raam‘ – when tested on the touchstone of true Divine Love / Virtues. Only that person who has become living dead (i.e. who lives in the world but NOT of the world – who has become ‘Sachiaaraa‘), has a chance when tested on the touchstone of ‘Raam’. ||33|| (sggs 1366).
- ਜਿਨ ਕੇ ਚਿਤ ਕਠੋਰ ਹਹਿ ਸੇ ਬਹਹਿ ਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪਾਸਿ ॥ ਓਥੈ ਸਚੁ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਕੂੜਿਆਰਾ ਚਿਤ ਉਦਾਸਿ ॥ ਓਇ ਵਲੁ ਛਲੁ ਕਰਿ ਝਤਿ ਕਢਦੇ ਫਿਰਿ ਜਾਇ ਬਹਹਿ ਕੂੜਿਆਰਾ ਪਾਸਿ ॥ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਚੇ ਕੂੜੁ ਨ ਗਡਈ ਮਨਿ ਵੇਖਹੁ ਕੋ ਨਿਰਜਾਸਿ ॥ ਕੂੜਿਆਰ ਕੂੜਿਆਰੀ ਜਾਇ ਰਲੇ ਸਚਿਆਰ ਸਿਖ ਬੈਠੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪਾਸਿ ॥ ੨੬॥ : Those who are stony hearted (i.e. unkind, full of Bikaar: lust, anger, greed, attachment, pride etc.) cannot sit near Satiguru (True Wisdom-ਸੱਚਾ ਗਿਆਨ) because the truth is spoken there. Liars or false do not digest the truth, consequently they always feel depressed there. They waste their time by deception and then get up and go to the liars or false. Check it out and see in your mind — falsehood does not mix in Truth. Liars or false mingle with liars or false and true Sikhs (‘Sachiaar‘) sit with Satiguru (ਸਚ ਦਾ ਗਿਆਨ – true Wisdom). ||26|| (sggs 314).
Also in Deraas, they commit adultery and physically abuse and exploit women in the name of giving ‘boys’ to them (ਅੋਰਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੁੰਡੇ ਦੇਣ ਦਾ ਪਖੰਡ). Just do the DNA test of children so born and see who the DNA matches with! These places appear to be bases of luxury (ਐਸ਼ ਪਰਸਤੀ).
It’s similar to the practice of Brahmin Pujaaree-Vaad, who for centuries kept young girls in temples as sex slaves — ‘Devadasi‘ – ਦੇਵਦਾਸੀ – system — bases of luxury (ਐਸ਼-ਪਰਸਤੀ). This ‘Devadasi‘ system became the cause of adultery in temples. Not only temple priests exploited these Devadasis, but also other people who were special guests or associated with the temple also physically abused these Devadasis.
Although the SGGS is the source of the Gurmat Wisdom (ਗਿਆਨ -Enlightenment), however the Pujaaree-Vaad has turned the SGGS into the means of earning (ਕਮਾਈ ਦਾ ਜਰੀਆ), the means of business (ਧੰਧੇ ਦਾ ਜਰੀਆ), the means of dishonesty (ਬੇਈਮਾਨੀ ਦਾ ਜਰੀਆ), the means of manipulation (ਹੇਰਾਫੇਰੀ ਦਾ ਜਰੀਆ) etc. In nutshell they rob (ਲੁਟਣਾਂ) people and make them blockheaded (ਕਮਲੇ).
Sikhi of the Pujaaree
Sikhi spirituality of the self-serving and Hinduised Pujaaree is the spirituality of:
- Distortion of Guru Nanak’s divine Spirituality and true Message of the Gurbani (SGGS) through manufactured BOOKS (over three dozens), distorted Sikh history, unbelievable tales of MIRACLES (karaamaat) called SAKHIS-ਸਾਖੀ written by them, using vedic and puranic slants in interpretations and translations of the Gurbani etc.,
- Taking Guru Nanak’s Unique and Revolutionary Spirituality back to pre-1469 belief system,
- After DEATH concepts – Jum Doot, Chitar Gupt, Lekhaa, ancestors etc,
- FEAR, Greed etc,
- Priestly order,
- Fake GOD separate from man,
- Manufactured history, Sakhis etc,
- Myths – illogical and laughable concepts taken from Granths written by the opponents of the Sikh Gurus,
- BEGGING, ASKING (Mayaic Ardaas-ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀਆਂ ਅਰਦਾਸਾ),
- MIDDLE-MAN (Pujaaree – ਵਿਚੋਲਾ ) – intermediaries,
- Jaat Paat – casteism,
- Useless religious KARAMKAAND (Rituals),
- BLIND FAITH (ਅੰਧ-ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸ),
- Fanning vices/BIKAAR,
- Steering people away from the real MESSAGE of the Gurbani,
- Enslaving people’s MINDS (thinking), taking them backward,
- JAAT PAAT,
- DOGMAS, SIMBOLS, ROBES which the SGGS rejects,
- Business (ਧੰਧਾਂ) in the name of Gurbani, God, Dharma, etc.
- Deraa-Vaad, Baabaa-Dom, Sant-Dom etc.
- Self-made ‘RAHAT‘ instead of the ‘Rahat‘ or Way of Life taught in the SGGS (every Deraa has its own Rahat!),
- Fake Hell and Heaven, Sutak (or Sootak), Paap Punn, Religion, Dharma, Ghosts or Bhoot Pret, cycle of reincarnation (Avaa Gavan), ritual bathing, locations of pilgrimage (Tirath), Kirtan (ਕੀਰਤਨ), Bhagti, and Jum Doot, Dharma Raj, Chitr Gupt, life after death etc,
The list goes on and on.
In his Unique and Revolutionary Spirituality, Guru Nanak Wisely and logically DISCARDED all that nonsense of the Pujaaree.
The UNIQUE Sikhi Spirituality of the SGGS
Sikhi spirituality of the Shabad (SGGS) is the spirituality of:
- The SELF, for the SELF and by the SELF,
- WISDOM – Enlightenment – Giyan-Maarag,
- HERE AND NOW – NOT Afterlife or after death,
- One Omnipresent and Omnipotent CREATOR, functioning within all as HUKAM (Cosmic System-Rule-Law-Order of Nature, ਨਿਯਮ) – ‘ਹੁਕਮੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਹੁਕਮ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥’
- Living in harmony with HUKAM –‘ਹੁਕਮਿ ਰਜਾਈ ਚਲਣਾ’,
- Global ONENESS, and equality
- BLISS (Ananad, Joy),
- Godly Contentment,
- Inculcating Divine VIRTUES or Qualities, Truthfulness,
- Opening ‘DASAM DUAAR‘ (mind, ਦਿਮਾਗ) of its Sikhs,
- AWAKENING minds to logical thinking, Bibek, discerning intellect,
- FEARLESSNESS, being brave-heart,
- LIBERATION Here and Now, living dead,
- Equality,
- Molding character,
- Building minds,
- Developing integrity and global attitude
- Elimination of intermediaries,
- Completely doing away with the priestly order (PUJAAREE),
- Rejections of all Brahmanical concepts such as TEERATH (locations of pilgrimage), RITUAL BATHING, counting BEADS (rosary or Maalaa), religious PARAPHERNALIA and Robes, ritual READING, all kinds of religious KARAMKAAND and dogmas etc.
Ending
The Gurbani alerts humanity:
- ਦੁਨੀਆ ਹੁਸੀਆਰ ਬੇਦਾਰ ਜਾਗਤ ਮੁਸੀਅਤ ਹਉ ਰੇ ਭਾਈ ॥ : O people of the world! Be vigilant and Alert; O brother! you are being robbed even while you are awake. (sggs 972).
