Debunking Dietary Dogmas

Injunctions of the Gurbani (SGGS) critiques, rejects, and debunks the dietary dogmas concocted by the Bipar-Vaad (Sanatanism, Prohit-Vaad, Brahmin-Vaad…). Bipar’s followers (Sanatani revisionists — Bipar, Udasis, Nirmalas etc) present the ‘Nirmal‘ (pure – free from contamination/impurities of the existing pre-1469 beliefs) Gurmat of Guru Nanak, the progenitor Guru of Sikhi, as an appendage of the Sanatan philosophy.

The Enlightenment of the Shabad enshrined within the Sri Guru Granth Sahib (SGGS) teaches humans have two different paths (ways of life) to choose from:

  1. “Phaasan Kee Bidhi-ਫਾਸਨ ਕੀ ਬਿਧਿ” — the way of spiritual death, moral death, trapped in worldly quagmire, indulgence in sense-gratifications, uncontrolled vices/Bikaar, way of the Manmukh-Saakat-Mayadhaaree, antithetical to Gurmat, etc.
  2. “Chhootan” ki Bidhi–”ਛੂਟਨ” ਬਿਧਿ — the way of spiritual life, moral life, liberation from ignorance, freedom  from vices/Bikaar, freedom from slavery of senses and outer domination or Bhav Saagar, way of the Gurmukh, the Way to become Living Liberated (Jeevan Mukatetc.

The Innovative, Unique, and Revolutionary Way of the SGGS is a “Chhootan” Ki Bidhi–”

However, those who follow the Biparan‘s way with sheepish and crowd mentality only know the way of “Phaasan Kee Bidhi-ਫਾਸਨ ਕੀ ਬਿਧਿ”! They do not know the Gurmat Way of “Chhootan-ਛੂਟਨ” .

: (Wherever you see) everyone knows the way to be trapped (Phaasan), but hardly anyone knows how to be Freed (Chhootab). (sggs 331).

Those entangled in Bipran way have broken away from the fundamental principles of the Gurmat (the Way of the Shabad Guru: SGGS). In addition reluctance to read and understand the Gurbani ourselves, and unwillingness to internalize and live daily life in conformance with the Gurmat injunctions is encouraging and creating confusion among Sikhs. The result is that Gurbani advises something else, but the Pujaaree click and administrators trained by Sanatani revisionists say and do something else (i.e. contrary to the Gurbani’s Unique Message). Because they claim the right to interpret the teachings of the SGGS as they wish!

As a result, the Sanatani mythology, traditions, UN-Gurmat rituals and beliefs have infiltrated in Sikhi and Sikh institutions and have gradually weakened them producing a watered-down Gurmat of Guru Nanak and muddled Sikh history.

Sikh intelligentsia (so called ਵਿੱਦਵਾਨ), self-proclaimed traditionalists (Sampradas), self-serving PUJAAREE clique (clergy), dera sadh babas etc so immersed in Sanatan dogmatic theology have hijacked and outsourced the key metaphysical concepts of Gurmat of Guru Nanak to the Sanatan beliefs, UN-Gurmat rituals, dietary dogmas, beliefs and traditions that have been rejected by Guru Nanak in no uncertain terms.

Furthermore the Bipar — the originator of caste system in India — installed itself the superior of all other groups in India. The Sikh Gurus and Bhagats tried to eliminate this evil from the society, and taught all of us to do the same.

Alas, now the self-styled Sikh Pujaaree clique, Sikh institutions/Gurdwara committee boomers, dera sadh babas etc consider themselves to be superior then rest of the Sikhs based on their diet and external Sikh appearance (ਭੇਖ-Bhelh, attire, robs, symbols) to satiate their fat false-ego-sense (Haumai) or for validation.

They look down upon ordinary working Sikhs who earn their living honestly (i.e. Kirti-ਕਿਰਤੀ Sikhs) as spiritually inferior or ‘sinful‘ (ਪਤਿਤ-Patit, ਪਾਪੀ-Paapi) based on external attire or diet. This is institutional exclusivism, where certain groups or individuals are deliberately labeled ‘sinful’, ‘inferior’ etc and kept out of the process, decision making, or community.

Eating vs. not eating meat – what is Guru Nanak’s counsel?

It was never the intention of the Sikh Gurus that one type of Brahmin-Vaad should come to an end and a new type of Sikh Brahminism should replace it!

The FOCUS OF GURU NANAK’s core Gurmat or Sikhi is more on moral and spiritual discipline than strict dietary rules, Awakening the Luminous State within — An invitation to harmonize our inner rhythms with the Universe (Divine Hukam) and become “Sachiaar“. That being said, we should carefully consider the injunctions of the Gurbani (SGGS) and shape our lifestyle (ਜੀਵਨ-ਜੁਗਤ) accordingly.

Having said that, Guru Nanak calls those who argue about eating or not eating meat “FOOL-ਮੂਰਖੁ”.

Yet, sans of foundational Gurmat principles, many in Sikh world seem to be confused about what should one eat and not eat?

To resolve the confusion created on issues such as eating versus not eating meat, one must look directly at the primary Gurmat principle set by Guru Nanak. Enlightenment of the Shabad included in Sri Guru Granth Sahib (SGGS) takes Sikhs out of diet related confusion.

Guru Nanak’s counsel in this context is very clear — so clear even an simpleton can understand it. Consider the following Shabad by Guru Nanak and recorded on page 1289 of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib::

  • ਮਾਸੁ ਮਾਸੁ ਕਰਿ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਝਗੜੇ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਣੈ ॥ ਕਉਣੁ ਮਾਸੁ ਕਉਣੁ ਸਾਗੁ ਕਹਾਵੈ ਕਿਸੁ ਮਹਿ ਪਾਪ ਸਮਾਣੇ ॥ : Only a FOOL squabbles and engages in arguments regarding meat, (but that fool) neither knows what is spiritual Wisdom nor contemplation. (Due to lack of Wisdom, a fool) does not know the real difference in what is called meat and what is called a green vegetable, (and eating) which leads to sin. (sggs 1289).

Also, consider the Shabad that precedes the above Shabad, which is also by Guru Nanak and also recorded on the same page (i.e. 1289) of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib (SGGS):

: First of all, mortal is conceived in flesh (i.e. the semen of the father; the union of mother and father). Then he resides in the flesh (i.e. mother’s womb). When the mortal comes alive, it has a tongue made of flesh in its mouth; then the whole body including bones, skin body are found to be made of flesh. Even when the mortal comes out of the flesh (i.e. mother’s womb), he takes a mouthful of flesh at the mother’s breast. His mouth is of flesh, his tongue is of flesh, and he breathes in flesh. When he grows up, he gets married an brings the flesh (i.e. spouse) into his house. (Then) from the flesh (child-form) flesh is born; (So, the whole world) is related to the flesh. (Instead of wrangling about eating meat or not to eat), if we meet Satgur (true Wisdom-ਸਚਾ ਗਿਆਨ) and understand the Hukam (Cosmic Order-System-Rule-Law of Nature), then the creature (coming into the world) comes to pass, then the solution to this fleshly argument will be found automatically, meaning the understanding of the subject will also come. (The mortal has such an intimate connection with the flesh from birth to death that) mortal cannot escape from the flesh even with full force; O Nanak! such baseless wrangling do the opposite (i.e. ਨੁਕਸਾਨ-damage, wastage, detriment, ruin etc.). ||1|| (sggs 1289).

In both foregoing Shabads (and more), Guru Nanak asserts that fools argue over flesh and meat because they know nothing of spiritual Giyan-Wisdom and how to look within the self. Guru Nanak Illustrates that flesh (Mass-ਮਾਸ) is the basis of physical life — from biological conception and the process or period of developing inside the uterus between conception and birth, consuming mother’s milk, physical growth, marriage, and family relationships.

Arguing whether plant-based diet (ਸਾਗੁ-Saag) or meat-based diet (ਮਾਸੁ-Maas) is inherently pure or sinful misses the point.

All physical sustenance emerges from the same source — water and divine creation.

: In the first place, it is water with life because of which everything blossoms. (sggs 472).

Next the Gurbani (SGGS) teaches us that there is life (Jeev) in every vegetable, in every leaf, and in every grain of food.

: As many are the grains of food, none is without life. (sggs 472).
: The gardener plucks leaves for idol-worship. But, she doesn’t know that every leaf has life in it. On the other hand, the stone Idol for whose worship the gardener plucks these leaves is life-less. ||1|| (sggs 479).

In addition, there are also countless micro Jeev in air we breathe, the water we drink, and the earth we walk on. Put simply, one even has to stop breathing to avoid consuming another life!

Having said that, a person does not become sinful by consuming meat nor does one become pious by renouncing meat.

In short, the decision regarding whether to consume plant-based diet or meat-based diet should be up to each individual and his/her own physician, dietitian, and personal health goals. Commonsense dictates excess of anything is bad. Moderation (ਥੋੜਾ-Thorha), balanced diet and avoiding overconsumption is the key.

: (Those who are contended) break bondage to the world (Maya’s fetters/traps…), and consume in moderation (i.e. taking only what is needed). (sggs 467).
  • ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਜੋ ਪਹਿਰੈ ਖਾਇ ॥ ਜਿਉ ਕੂਕਰੁ ਜੂਠਨ ਮਹਿ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥ : Sans of Divine Naam (abidance in Divine Giyan-Wisdom / Virtues / Hukam) whatever a person wears and eats, it is as a wandering dog eating leftover/discarded food. ||1|| (sggs 240).

Therefore NO discernible reason exists behind creating confusion and controversies about diet — other than the anti-Nanak and anti-Gurmat Bipar and his followers who became uncomfortable with the Gurbani’s innovative, unique and revolutionary Message that rejected Bipar-Vaad. Hence the Bipar-Vaad thunpers are hellbent on extinguishing Gurmat and making it an appendage of the older Sanatan philosophy. That said, for Sikhs of Guru Nanak, to follow the Sanatani revisionists is like shooting oneself in the foot

ਪਾਇ ਕੁਹਾੜਾ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਗਾਫਲਿ ਅਪੁਨੈ ਹਾਥਿ ||13|| : Kabir, one lost his/her faith for the sake of the worldly wealth and material things, even this world did not go with man in the end. It is like an imprudent (senseless, careless…) strikes an axe on his own foot with his own hand (i.e. causing harm to oneself on own accord). ||13|| (sggs 1365).

Religious Hypocrisy – Phakhand (ਪਖੰਡ)

: (Even in the old days, people) according to the nature of gods (i.e. to please gods) killed the rhinoceros and perform Yagna (ਜੱਗ). Those human beings who (by themselves) forsake the flesh (but, when they see flesh somewhere), sit down and close their noses (that the smell of flesh has come, however), they eat men at night (i.e. secretly they plan to cheat, exploit fellow human beings etc.). They practice hypocrisy (that they do not eat meat) and make a show before other people, but they have NO understanding of Wisdom or Awareness. There is no point in explaining to a mentally-blind person, (even if someone explains) even then he does not understand what is explained. (sggs 1289).

Granths written by Brahmin contain explicit references to animal sacrifice and meat consumption — offering, oblation or sacrifice of animals in religious rituals, Yagnas etc to propitiate or please Brahmin’s imaginary goddess (Devi) and gods (Devta). In fact Brahmin has also connected some favorite intoxicants (Shiv with Bhang, etc) to his imaginary goddess (Devi) and gods (Devta – ‘diety’). Gurbani has clearly explained that gods and goddesses (Devi-Devta) are the product of the imagination of those who are infatuated with Maya.

: The basic reason for the creation of imaginary gods and goddesses is Maya. (sggs 129).

Simply put: Bipar made Devi-Devta in his own image and then worshiped them as an embodiment of his own imperfection, craftiness, deceptiveness etc!

The truth is that the Pujaaree himself consumes under the pretext of his imaginary and mythological figures called Devi-Devta (330 millions of them). In addition, he also invented custom or ritual of offering oblation (“Bhog” Laanaa-ਭੋਗ ਲਾਉਣਾਂ) to idols is the cause of grave fraud and deception. Nevertheless, he publicly claims disgust and looks down on those who consume meat.

Similarly, the anti-Nanak and anti-Gurmat Sanatani revisionists (Bipar’s followers) also claims disgust at Sikhs consuming meat. However Bhagat Kabir points out that those who claim to be pious and superior based on diet clandestinely consume whole loads of food.

: To the world (hypocrites) may claim that they are surviving only on milk. But secretly they eat whole loads of food. ||3|| (sggs 873).
: If a person lives a life of disgrace (without of Naam: Divine Giyan-Wisdom / Virtues / Hukam); then whatever that person consumes/gets/receives, its all Haraam (immoral/dishonest etc). (sggs 142).

These people are nothing but hypocrites (Pakhandi) who publicly claim disgust at eating meat while metaphorically devour human beings (‘ਮਾਣਸ ਖਾਣੇ’) and (rotten) corpse (‘ਮੁਰਦਾਰੁ ਖਾਇ’) through exploitation, malice, slander, deception, fraud, lies, and so on.

That said, according to the Shabad Guru (SGGS), if you live a life of greed, lying, falsehood, cheating, slandering etc (i.e vices/Bikaar) then know you are metaphorically eating dead animals or devour human beings (‘ਮਾਣਸ ਖਾਣੇ‘). Alas, irony is that these strayed people go on to teach others who is Dhaarmic, Spiritual or religious and who is not!

: The person who lies (makes money illegally by making false agreements) as if is eating (rotten) corpse. But he goes on to teach others (not to lie). The man who has strayed himself will drown his companions too. But he goes on to teach others ||1|| (sggs 139-140).

Irony

Shabad Guru (SGGS) asks then why do Pujaaree, religious institutions, people in Gurdwaras takes donations and contributions from the ‘Kirti’ Sikhs (‘ਕਿਰਤੀ’ = who earn living honestly) whom they think are sinners or inferior Sikhs based on their external appearance or diet and consider themselves contractors of religion (ਧਰਮ ਦੇ ਠੇਕੇਦਾਰ)?

In truth the ‘Kirti’ Sikhs‘ reading and understanding of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib (SGGS) are more introspective and more practical. Because they live by the Guru Nanak’s counsel.

We routinely hear about three basic principles of Gurmat from the stages — Kirat Karni, Naam Japna, and Vand Ke Chakna.

A ‘Kirti’ Sikh pursues the purpose of human birth, which can only be reinforced through Naam (life conforming to the Divine Divine Giyan / Virtues / Hukam). In other words, the importance of Naam is only revealed through one’s deeds/actions (Kirat). This means there can be no true ‘Vand Ke Chakna’ (sharing, giving in charity) if first two principles are missing!

Here is an another eye opening Shabad by Guru Nanak, recorded on page 1289 of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib (SGGS). In this Shabad, Guru Nanak is questioning the Pujaaree if eating meat is a sin, then where is the virtue of taking charity from those who eat meat?

: The eating of meat has been mentioned both in Hindu Puranas (to propitiate gods and goddesses) as well as in Semitic scriptures; in fact, meat has been in use in through the ages. In Yags (holy feasts), in functions such as marriage, the use of meat is predominant, and meat has been consumed in those places. All men, women, kings and emperors are born from flesh. (According to you, O Pandit/Brahmin/Pujaaree) if they seem to be going to hell because of being born out of flesh, then you should not be accepting any charity from them. Look at this injustice that the one who eats meat and gives charity goes to hell (according to Pandit), and the one who receives (i.e. Pandit) it goes to heaven? O Pandit, you pretend to be too clever by advising others about the right and wrong (in eating meat) when you yourself have no knowledge about it. O Pandit! You do not know where the flesh/meat originated. From water are produced corn (eaten by beings), sugarcane (eaten by beings) and cotton (clothes worn by beings) and thus from water the whole universe springs forth. (But the Pandit/Brahmin says although all are creation of water) but I am (i.e. Pandit/Brahmin) good in many ways but others created from water have faults (i.e others are – they are lower/inferior/sinners). Nanak proclaims this view: The Brahmin/Pandit/Pujaaree should then give up yearning for all the worldly relishes/pleasures and become a renouncer/ascetic. ||2|| (sggs 1290).

The above Shabad by Guru Nanak points out the hypocrisy (Pakhand) in religious leaders and self-serving Pujaaree class who label certain people ‘sinful’, ‘inferior’ or ‘unworthy’ of management roles in Sikhi related institutions/Gurdwars while readily taking their hard-earned donations, financial contributions, and labor (Kaar Sevaa) to build and run institutions/Gurdwaras etc.

Bhakh Abhakh

Then what Constitutes True Spiritual sin? According to the Gurbani, biological food stuff is not the real spiritual or moral Taboo (ਅਭਖੁ-Abhakh).

The real taboo as defined by the Gurbani is usurping another’s rights (‘Hack Paraya-ਹਕੁ ਪਰਾਇਆ’), dishonesty, corruption, exploitation, and so on.

  • ਹਕੁ ਪਰਾਇਆ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਉਸੁ ਸੂਅਰ ਉਸੁ ਗਾਇ ॥ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੀਰੁ ਹਾਮਾ ਤਾ ਭਰੇ ਜਾ ਮੁਰਦਾਰੁ ਨ ਖਾਇ ॥ ਗਲੀ ਭਿਸਤਿ ਨ ਜਾਈਐ ਛੁਟੈ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਇ ॥ ਮਾਰਣ ਪਾਹਿ ਹਰਾਮ ਮਹਿ ਹੋਇ ਹਲਾਲੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਗਲੀ ਕੂੜੀਈ ਕੂੜੋ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥੨॥ : To violate or usurp someone’s right or taking away something that rightfully belongs to others is like eating pork for a Muslim and beef for a Hindu. The ‘Guru Pir‘ (Spiritual Guide) would standby only if the follower does not make unlawful living. Mere talk does not lead to heaven; liberation (from vices/Bikaar) lies in God realization. If you add spice to unlawfully earned food, it does not become Halal (lawful). Nanak, false talking begets only falsehood. ||2|| (sggs 141).

A rabid dog cannot be trusted. It will bite and infect whosoever comes in its contact. Unsatisfied greed is akin to the disease of rabies; and a greedy person is compared to a rabies-ridden dog in the Gurbani (SGGS). Therefore, as it’s safe and commonsense to avoid a rabid dog, the Gurbani teaches us to avoid a greedy person because he/she cannot be trusted. Greed results in limitless hankering for sense gratification. Indulged in sensory pleasures, one slides down into the dark pit of vices/Bikaar, ignorance, resulting in foolishness, madness and illusion.

: Like the mad dog running around in all directions, the greedy person, unaware, grabs or misappropriates everything that comes in his way (sggs 50).

The uncomfortable truth

Since the Bipar could not defend Guru Nanak’s logical arguments and felt his uncompromising critique of their respective worldviews as an existential threat, they decided to systematically severe Guru Nanak and his Gurmat/Sikhi as they did to Buddhism successfully. Dietary Confusion is created by the Sanatani revisionists, the Bipar’s followers.

Although, most religious people are decent human beings genuinely seeking the truth and striving for goodness. But the loudest among the religious often tend to be hypocrites (Pakhandi).

Here is the uncomfortable truth — Look around, you’ll notice a disturbing pattern that some of the most reprehensible individuals are also the loudest about their faith, dogmatic rituals they practice, external Sikh appearance they use (Bhekh-ਭੇਖ, attire), diet etc. Following are some of the reasons the organized religions attract worst of the worst people:

  • To use their religious authority to employ fate, empty rituals, dietary dogmas, concocted narratives etc to enforce their will on others.
  • To use religion to divide people in factions, sects, Jaat Paat (casteism), color of clothing, Taksali and Sampardayi sections, Deras, food, second Guru, etc.
  • They know they can misuse religion as hypocrites (Pakhandi) without shame — the deliberate emasculation of authentic Sikhi/Gurmat of Guru Nanak in favor of a governance model that prioritizes optics over true Sikhi/Gurmat! The logic behind is this: push the youth, and other groups they considered inferior Sikhs away so only the idiotic people are left in charge of Sikh institutions/Gurdwaras etc.
  • Religion offers them a powerful tool to manipulate and influence others.
  • Religion allows them to hold religious power and authority over others.
  • Religion provides them a Shield to hide their true (corrupt, hypocritical) nature.
  • Religion offers then a way to validate their superiority/authority over others, appearing inclusive while robbing the Golak (donation box).
  • Religion offers them a freeloading lifestyle (ਵੇਹਲੜ, mooching, sponging etc.).
  • The Allure of religious extremism to justify violence or hatred by twisting the teachings of their faith to serve their selfish ends.
  • Religion offers them the Illusion of moral and spiritual superiority.
  • Religion fulfills their need for justification of their harmful deeds.

What the SGGS calls Manmukh-Saakat-Mayadhaaree (i.e. UN-enlightened beings), after all they follow myths, narratives, faiths, beliefs and traditions that have the filthiest of degeneracy in them. So how can they be spiritually equal to the Guru’s real Sikhs?

: Such is the way of the Manmukh (UN-enlightened): he/she is not conscious of the Divine Naam (abidance in Divine Giyan-Wisdom / Virtues / Hukam) and he does not reflect on the Shabad. (sggs 508).
: Those who are false within, and (display themselves as) honorable on the outside, are ample in this world (common, wide-spread…). (sggs 473).
: O Pandit (i.e. Pujaaree, religious scholar etc.)! Do not tell lies, speak the Truth. (sggs 904).

The Sikh institutions/Gurdwara Committee boomers, their quislings earn-a-living Pujaaree clique (Bhai, Ragis, Granthis, Parcharaks, Kathakars, Dhadi etc), deredaar sadh babas etc selectively quote verses from SGGS and of Bhai Gurdas to justify their open door policy. However, anybody opposing their worldview, they declare them inferior Sikhs, non-Sikhs, Guru-Dokhi (‘Beadbi‘), sinners, Patit (fallen), and demand them to be excommunicated, and so on.

: Excessive thirst for Maya makes people wear all sorts of religious garbs to impress other people. (sggs 352).
: In the gathering of the fool cawing takes place. (Bhai Gurdas, Vaar 32, Paouri 19).

Bipran system has done great damage to the Indian psyche even to this day. In general, it kept Indians week (with the exception of Sikhs and Marathas), slaved, exploited, uneducated and economically backward for many centuries under foreign looters, invaders, and occupiers.

Bhagat Kabir says Brahmin is no Guru of anybody. But a fraud. If Sikhs wish to realize their true spiritual, moral, emotional, intellectual potential, they must abandon Bipar-vaad and Bipar’s fllowers, and go back to the Guru Nanak’s authentic, unique and revolutionary Gurmat — Way of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib that begins with the first letter “੧” (one) rejecting the Brahminical system (Bipran or Sanatani system, dogmatic rituals, practices etc) — Brahmin’s Maya Jaal-ਮਾਇਆ ਜਾਲ.

Guru Nanak resolutely declared Pujaaree to be the “ਓਜਾੜੇ ਕਾ ਬੰਧੁ-Ujarhe Kaa Bandh” — the root cause for the spiritual wreckage and desolation that mankind had come to endure:

  • ਕਾਦੀ ਕੂੜੁ ਬੋਲਿ ਮਲੁ ਖਾਇ ॥ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਜੀਆ ਘਾਇ ॥ ਜੋਗੀ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਅੰਧੁ ॥ ਤੀਨੇ ਓਜਾੜੇ ਕਾ ਬੰਧੁ ॥੨॥ : The clergy of the Muslim faith was corrupt, the Brahmin was murderous and the Yogi UN-Enlightened. These three (clergy) had become the root cause for the spiritual wreckage and desolation that mankind had come to endure. (sggs 662).
