Ultimate Purpose of Human Birth

From the One (Saabat, Jot Saroop…), we became two (divided, fragmented, two like a split grain or seed-ਦਲੀ ਹੋਈ ਦਾਲ ਵਾਂਗ ਦੋ ਫਾੜ…).

This division or duality (two-ness) is split into: Mann (ਮਨ-mind) and Chit (ਚਿਤ-discerning intellect, Budhi-ਬੁਧਿ, ਅਕਲ, Inner Voice-ਅੰਤਰ ਆਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਆਵਾਜ, Mool-ਮੂਲ…).

: (Man) is born in this life only to become ONE (with Prabh, Mool, etc. – through Naam…). (But) ever since (man’s) birth, (he) has been enticed and deceived by Maya. (sggs 251).

The Gurmat (Giaan or Wisdom, Upadesh or Way of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib, SGGS)This human life is the opportunity given to us to become One again – ‘ਸਾਬਤ ਸੂਰਤਿ’, to link back with the Mool-Jot Saroop. If we miss it, repeated suffering in life is certain, here and now.

Our Budhi (ਬੁਧਿ) unceasingly reminds this Truth to our mind by asking: O mind! you used to be ‘ਕੇਸਵਾ’ (One Pure Consciousness, Jot Saroop-‘ਜੋਤਿ ਸ੍ਵਰੂਪੀ’…), but why have you become now like a split grain or seed (fragmented, divided, conditioned, two, ਦਲੀ ਹੋਈ ਦਾਲ ਵਾਂਗ ਦੋ ਫਾੜ…)?

: O Kalandar (mind)! you came as ‘ਕੇਸਵਾ’ (Kesav-One Pure Consciousness, Joti-Svaroopa-‘ਜੋਤਿ ਸ੍ਵਰੂਪੀ’…), but now (you) have assumed this appearance of a split grain or seed (divided, ਦਲੀ ਹੋਈ ਦਾਲ ਵਾਂਗ ਦੋ ਫਾੜ…) (sggs 1167).

This split, division, or fragmentation is the result of our love for Maya (the principle of plurality…). Although Maya and Brahma are blended with everything, but, on account of our fascination for Maya, our mind either ignores or overrules what our Budhi tells us.

: Maya and Brahm are blended with everything. (sggs 343).

The Gurbani tells us that we cannot link back to our Mool (One Truth…), unless and until we become One again (Whole, Total, Undivided, Unconditioned, ਸਾਬਤ…), here and now. In othword, all conditioning, fragmentation, divisions, duality, etc., must vanish and only One must remain.

: The One, the Jot (Light…) of the One, abides within my mind; the One Brahm is seen in all. (sggs 1325).
: Those who planted the seed (of Hari Naam-ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਬੀਜ) have departed with honor; (but) for now the seed cannot sprout (because of duality, fragmentation-ਦਾਲ ਵਾਂਗ ਦੋ-ਫਾੜ ਹੋ ਰਹੇ, ਭਾਵ ਦੁਚਿੱਤਾ-ਪਨ, ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਜੁੜਦਾ…). The seed srouts only if the seed is whole (undivided, Saabat-ਸਾਬਤ…), and if the season is proper (similarly, the Naam-seed sprouts within only if the mind and Consciousness – ਮੱਨ ਅਤੇ ਚਿੱਤ – are one: whole, complete, unfragmented, total, Saabat-ਸਾਬਤ…). (sggs 468).

How? what’s the Process (Way, ਵਿਧਿ…) to become One? According to the Gurbani, the Process is:

: One who enshrines the One in his mind, remains unaffected by hope in the midst of hope (worldly desires, demands of the body-body consciousness), he lives isolated (ਇਕਾਂਤ i.e., while living in the world -in the midst of Maya – he remains unaffected by it…). (sggs 938).
: By becoming the Gurmukh, the One Immaculate (Rabb) is known. (sggs 223).
: Who knows (ਪਛਾਣ…) the Satiguru Realizes the One. (sggs 1070).

In other words, by becoming the Gurmukh, one must live to the end in Undivided Consciousness (‘ਸਾਬਤ ਸੂਰਤਿ’). To yet put it otherwise, one must transcend the body-consciousness (animal consciousness…), duality (two-ness, Mayaic consciousness…), and so on.

In short, a Gurmukh (Bhagat, Daas, Jan…) is a Wise person, brave person, good person, virtuous person, fearless, blissful (Anand), pious person, Joyful, always positive, etc.

All Gurus and Bhagats have practically demonstrated to the entire world that this can be and must be done, here and now.

Off course, this will require commandment towards this target of life. And, to meet this ultimate purpose of life, the Gurbani asks us to keep aimed at the target with the sword or arrow of Gur-Giaan or Wisdom.

: (You) have obtained (this) human body. This is your chance (time, opportunity…) of uniting Gobind within (i.e. knowing, recognizing or meeting ownself as Jot Saroop…). Give up other efforts (e.g. Karamkaand, rituals, formalities etc.) for they are of no avail to you. (Therefore) join the ‘Saadhsangat’ (Satsangee Jan, pious beings…) and join the Naam (i.e. take the Wisdom or Giaan). (sggs 12).

In nutshell, the Gurbani tells us that NOBODY else can do it for us. In other words, It can NOT be made an order, or given to somebody as a readymade package, or blown into somebody’s ears, or spit into somebody’s mouth, etc.

  • ਆਪਣ ਹਥੀ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਕਾਜੁ ਸਵਾਰੀਐ ॥੨੦॥: (So long there is breath — Praan) With own hands (with effort, ਉੱਦਮ ਕਰ ਕੇ: Shabad-Vichaar …), resolve your own affair yourself. ||20|| (sggs 474).
: (Jeev-individual being) resolves his own affair (i.e., the Purpose of life of Mool Realization) himself; anyone else cannot do this work (for him). (sggs 351).

  1. I will call it a ruhani experience to read through the contents of this site. I think none of us can complaint that we were not informed and thus we wasted our human life out of ignorance. Everything, every secret, every wisdom has been made available by the enlightened Gurus for each one of us. It all depends how much one is ready to receive and understand, how much one wants the guru gyan to seep in the soul and free the mind (mann) from the duality. It all depends on ur readiness and eagerness. Guru has already showered his grace. We need to increase our knowing.

  2. Thank you for taking the time to comment on this post. Sorry, we don’t have the Sakhi you are looking for.
Here are couple of verses from the Gurbani:
(sggs 692).
: (sggs 1137).

  3. It was very interesting to read your blog. I wonder if you can help me. I have been searching the internet about a Sakhi (story) about one of the Guruji’s about “Jeena Choot Marna Saach”. (My easy translation is Living is a lie and dying is the truth). I can’t find it anywhere. I would apperciate a reply back.
    Many thanks,
    Nindy.
