Truth is not an acquisition that has to be sought. It is a realization and an Awakening.
The Gurbani tells us that we cannot realize or Awaken Truth (= The Creator) until we are pure in Heart:
- ਸੁਚਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਤਾ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੨॥: ||2|| If you are pure (within), then you will obtain Truth ||2|| (sggs 472).
: Let man do honest and true work. Then understand that he has come to understand the Truth — Gurmat has settled in his mind. Such a person will not waver. He will not die a spiritual death (ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ) because of repeated good and bad thoughts. Wearing this Siropa (of the Gurmat), that person lives as a ‘Pardhaan‘ (supreme, distinguished, eminent etc.) in this universal ‘Dargah’. ||4||14|| (sggs 19).
But why do we need to realize the Truth? The Gurbani says:
: As long as Truth does not enter into the consciousness, the Mansion of the Lord’s Presence is not found.
: Without the Truth, how can anyone be pure? (sggs 269).
: If (someone) is impure within, (he) cannot become pure (without washing the mind with Shabad. How rare is the person who washes (his mind) with the Shabad (Wisdom, Upadesh, Sikhiaa, Naam…). (sggs 1344).
The Gurbani’s edict is that one’s bond is established with Truth when one lives the Truth by becomimg a Gurmukh, Bhagat, Daas, truthful,
: The benefit of reading Veda (i.e. religious books) is only if the Truth and high morals revealed from them are also revealed in one’s life. (sggs 143).
To put it otherwise, spiritual realization or Awakening (ਛੁਟਕਾਰਾ) comes by realizing Truth (Sach-ਸਚ), not by mere talk, etc. In other words, spiritual triumph or success comes through Truth (Sach-ਸਚ). No wonder this One Sach (ਸਚ-Truth) is Glorified in the Gurbani as the Master of all (‘ਸਚੁ ਸਭਨਾ ਕਾ ਖਸਮੁ ਹੈ’)!
- ਨਾਨਕ ਗਲੀ ਕੂੜੀਈ ਕੂੜੋ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥: Nanak, false talking begets only falsehood. ||2|| (sggs 141).
- ਗਿਆਨੁ ਨ ਗਲੀਈ ਢੂਢੀਐ ਕਥਨਾ ਕਰੜਾ ਸਾਰੁ ॥ ਕਰਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਾ ਪਾਈਐ ਹੋਰ ਹਿਕਮਤਿ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥੨॥: Divine Giyan-Wisdom cannot be obtained through mere talking, to explain how to obtain it is extremely difficult like chewing iron. Other tricks and dictates (of the mind) are useless. ||2|| (sggs 465).
: This Truth is the Master of all; blessed “Janu” (Gurmukh, Daas, Bhagat …) obtains it (sggs 922).
: O Nanak! Falsehood comes to an end and Truth ultimately prevails. (sggs 953).
Accordingly, Praise or Glorification (ਸਿਫਤ ਸਲਾਹ) of the One (Rabb) is said to be Sach (Truth) in the Gurbani.
: Sach is the Praise of the Sach; he alone utters (it-ਸਿਫਤ ਸਲਾਹ), whose (Heart) is drenched within (with the Gurbani’s Aatam-Giaan…). (sggs 312).
I utter and eulogize Virtues and the glory of the Truth. (sggs 310).
And, according to the Gurbani, he alone undertakes the Praise of the Sach whose Heart is already drenched with the Wisdom of the Gur-Shabad (Aatam-Giaan of the Gurbani). Furthermore, the Gurbani also reveals to us that he alone can Praise, continually, who has no iota of Maya’s hunger
: Phalguni nit salaaheeai jis no tilu n tamaai (sggs 136).
In fact, the entire Gurbani is the Praise of the One (Sach – Truth): It provides us with the Divine Virtues and Wisdom about the One Truth. Simply put: The Gurbani affords us Darshan of the One Truth.
A true being is known as the Gurmukh (Bhagat, Jan, Daas...) in the Gurbani – who understands the Gurbani, remembers it, and lives it in his daily life. To the contrary, the Manmukhs is mentioned to go astray, and wander repeated suffering.
- ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥੨॥: O Nanak! The Gurmukh earns Truth, (but) the Manmukh… ||2|| (sggs 87).
…: Sachu sache ke Jan Bhagat... (sggs 313).
The Truth is said not to get old in the Gurbani (i.e., remains the same in past, present, future…). Accordingly, a Gurmukh (who has realized Truth…) is also said to never grow old as well! Obviously, here the Gurbani is talking about the “old” (or the young) from a spiritual standpoint!
: The Truth does not grow old; the Divine Naam is never soiled (defiled, etc.). (sggs 1248).
: Your Hukam (System-Rule-Law of Nature, ਨਿਯਮ…) is Permanently in Existence (i.e. Hukam cannot be changed or violated); this is the Guru’s Realization. The Recognition or Realization (that the Creator / Hukam is Permanently in Existence) comes through the Gurmat (Giaan or Wisdom of the SGGG) removing Haumai (false ego-sense, ਖ਼ੁਦੀ). (sggs 144).
Now, how is this Truth realized (ਸਮਝ) and Awaken?
- ਆਇ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਥਿਰੁ ਸਦਾ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਸਚੁ ਜਾਣੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥: For being ever fixed or stable, (Saahib, Truth, Universal Energy…) does not come or go. The Truth is realized through the Wisdom of the Gur-Shabad (Gur-Giaan, Bibek, Upadesh…). ||1||Pause|| (sggs 70).
Baabaa Nanak says that the Truth is realized when the Truth abides in the Heart; when we bear love for the Truth; when we live the Way of Divine Life (the Gurmukh Lifestyle); when we have realized the Brahm-Giaan (Wisdom, Divine Knowledge) or the Gurmat (Wisdom, Giaan, Upadesh or Way of the SGGS…); when we dwell in the sacred shrine of pilgrimage of our own soul…
: The Creator is Realized then when the mind has BECOME true (sincere, genuine). (sggs 468).
: The Creator is Realized then when (the mind) abides in Love of the Creator. (sggs 468).
: The Creator Realized then when the Conscience (mind, self) knows the Way of (spiritual). (sggs 468).
: The Creator is Realized when the authentic Counsel (spiritual Wisdom-Giaan, Advice, Direction etc) is received by the mind. Realize Compassion for one’s self, provide for the needs of the Conscience. (mind, self). (sggs 468).
Hence, according to the Gurbani, true Sikhs (“ਵਣਜਾਰੇ ਸਿਖ”, “ਸਚੇ ਵਣਜਾਰੇ”) constantly deal only with the Shabad-Vichaar to learn the Wisdom (Gurmat, Aatam-Giaan or Knowledge of the Gurbani…).
: The trader Sikhs (who trade in the Gur-Shabad) come and through the Shabad, they are carried across (Bhavajal-Mayaic ocean…). (sggs 313).
: Sikhi is contemplation on Guru’s teaching (Instructions, Wisdom, Counsel, Guide, Upadesh, Giyan, Bibek) and acting on it. Being blessed by the Grace of the Guru’s teaching one then crosses the ocean of worldly temptations and their corrupting influences (Bhav Saagar). (sggs 465).
Babba Nanak tells us in the outset of the SGGS:
: How then can you become God-Realized being within (‘Sachiaaraa‘)? How can I remove the obstacle of my non-realized state within? O Nanak! (The way to realize Creator within is to) remain within the confines of His Hukam (the System or Law of Nature…) and abide in Sahaj, as (Creator and His Hukam) is contained with us. ||1|| (sggs 1).
Yes Veer T Singh Jeeo,
Gurbaanee messages are very articulate for understanding.Since Gurbaanee messages are for EVERY ONE ,the two aspects of the messages do affect the thought process of anyone and provide right direction towards NAAMu who is reading and understanding them.
In true sense Gurbaanee messages are directives for MUNMUKH as well as GURMUKH
as the whole humanity has been classified .
So one must focus on reading and listening of Gurbaanee from the core of the heart with LOVE and DEVOTION to feel the company/union of THE ULTIMATE LORD Abinaasee PRABHu,thru the grace of GuRu.
If I may add – reminding us of our personal responsibility, the Gurbani also commands:
(sggs 474).
(sggs 343).
(sggs 456).
(sggs 99).
(sggs 249).
(sggs 12).
(sggs 727).
(sggs 66).
Thank you Bhai Sahib Jio.
Thank you Bhai Sahib Jio for taking the time to share Shabad-Vichaar!
(sggs 89).
I think UNION with theLORD PRABHu is thru GRACE only.There are many quotes in Gurbaanee to support this.
Which Dharam or Which Karam GUJ(An Elephant) had done for LIBERATION. Similarly
GANIKAA got emancipation.HOW?
Gurbani advocates ultimate order of Truth, which is an integral quality of God i.e. ONENESS. If human beings are part of it then in order to join with its source of emanation, one is required to develop that quality within, otherwise fusion of such soul with the origin would be impossible. In a failing situation to have had lived a truthful life, life after life goes wasted. It requires lot of efforts, determination and preservation to be true to ourselves, and that is what Gurbani prepares for.
Thank you Bhai Sahib Jio!
: (sggs 1159)., This quote is the CRUX of THE KNOWLEDGE about NAAMu. It is very clear that MY ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੁ is THE KING RAAM NAAMu.
So we must understand this RAAM NAAMu from within Gurbaanee.
Thank you Bhai Sahib Jio for taking the time and share.
(sggs 831).
Thank you Bhai Sahib Jio for taking the time and share.
: (sggs 1159).
Refering to the Quote asਸੁਚਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਤਾ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥ : ||2|| If you are pure (within), then you will obtain Truth ||2|| (sggs 472).
And for becoming PURE one is directed for Jap/Simran of NAAMu only. So getting and remaining connected with NAAMu can make PURE and then one obtains the TRUTH.
Right at the start one learns from Gurbaanee as
“Bhariye Mati Paapaa Ke Sung,Uh Dhope Naave Kae Rung”
also in Sukhmannee one gets to know as
“Sarab Dharam Main Shreshat Dharamu,Hari Ko Naam Jap Nirmal Karam”
Thus it is NAAMu only thru which one can become PURE to obtain THe TRUTH( Which is again a NAAMu only)
Guru Amar Das Ji’s message on “Gurmat sachi sacha vichaar” clearly guides us on the path of Sikhi that includes on the importance of Naam, contemplation on Gurbani and loss of self conceit, as given below (Raag Dhanaasree M. 3, GGS. 666-1):-
ਨਾਵੈ ਕੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਕਹੀ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਧੰਨੁ ਜਿਨ ਇਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸਾਚੀ ਸਾਚਾ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸੇ ਦੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਚਰਜੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਪਿ ਸੁਣਾਏ ॥ ਕਲੀ ਕਾਲ ਵਿਚਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਏ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ ਹਮ ਮੂਰਖ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ॥ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਭ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਹੰਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ॥ ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸੇ ਲਏ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥੨॥ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਕਾ ਧਨੁ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਿ ਡੂਬੈ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਮਾਨੁ ॥ ਆਪੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਈ ॥੩॥ ਆਪੇ ਸਾਜੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਸੋਇ ॥ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ II ਜਿਸੁ ਸਚਿ ਲਾਏ ਸੋਈ ਲਾਗੈ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਆਗੈ ॥੪॥੮॥: The value and worth of the Lord’s Name cannot be described. Blessed are those humble beings, who lovingly focus their minds on the Naam, the Name of the Lord. True are the Guru’s Teachings, and True is contemplative meditation. God Himself forgives, and bestows contemplative meditation. ||1|| The Lord’s Name is wonderful! God Himself imparts it. In the Dark Age of Kali Yuga, the Gurmukhs obtain it. ||1||Pause|| We are ignorant; ignorance fills our minds. We do all our deeds in ego. By Guru’s Grace, egotism is eradicated. Forgiving us, the Lord blends us with Himself. ||2|| Poisonous wealth gives rise to great arrogance. Drowning in egotism, no one is honored. Forsaking self-conceit, one finds lasting peace. Under Guru’s Instruction, he praises the True Lord. ||3|| The Creator Lord Himself fashions all. Without Him, there is no other at all. He alone is attached to Truth, whom the Lord Himself so attaches. O Nanak, through the Naam, lasting peace is attained in the hereafter. ||4||8||
Welcome to the Gurbani Blog Bhai Sahib Jasdeep Singh Ji!
Thank you for sharing Shabad-Vichaar Ji.
This is the Gurbani’s edict Ji.
(sggs 1089).
Yesterday by chance i stumbled upon your blog by surfing on net.I subscribed at once because i believe in this ever changing web-era only gurbani can give us truly happiness and harmony.I really appreciate your writing . At last,i 100% agree there is no meaning of truth if we are not pure in heart.
I think it is worth knowing if ਸਚੁ and ਸਾਚੁ are conveying the same meaning. It may be noted both are SINGULAR as well as PLURAL.
