This is the life-style of the Gurmukh – a Living Enlightened person:

: Who has become the Gurmukh (the spiritual being, the follower of the Truth and truthful life, etc. – ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਬਣਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ) lives in the Fear of the Truth. Through the (Guru’s) Bani, who has become the Gurmukh refines (the mind – ਸੁਚੱਜਾ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ) the unrefined (mind – ਅਮੋੜ-ਮਨ). Who has become the Gurmukh sings Glorious Praises (ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ) of the Immaculate Lord. (Consequently) who has become the Gurmukh attains the supreme, sanctified status (ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਤੇ ਉੱਚੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ). who has become the Gurmukh meditates on the Lord with every hair of his body (ਤਨੋਂ ਮਨੋਂ). O Nanak! (Through devotion – ਬੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ) the Gurmukh merges in Truth (ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ). ||27|| who has become the Gurmukh becomes pleasing to the Guru (ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਬਣਾ ਲੈਂਣਾ -to develop deeper partnership with the Guru); this is (like) contemplation on the Vedas (or knowing of the Vedas). Pleasing the Guru (to develop deeper partnership with the Guru), who has become the Gurmukh is carried across (the world-ocean – ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ). Pleasing the Guru (to develop deeper partnership with the Guru), by becoming the Gurmukh, through the Shabad, (one) becomes the Giaanee (knower of the Truth). Pleasing the Guru (to develop deeper partnership with the Guru), who has become the Gurmukh comes to know the Inner (Dweller). who has become the Gurmukh attains (understands, realizes, etc.) the unseen and the Infinite Lord. O Nanak! By becoming the Gurmukh, find the door of liberation (from the false ego-sense – ਹਉਮੈ – bondage, Maya, etc.). ||28|| Who has become the Gurmukh speaks the unspoken wisdom. By becoming the Gurmukh, (one) lives a spiritual life In the midst of (his) family. Who has become the Gurmukh lovingly meditates deep within. By becoming the Gurmukh, through the Shabad, (one) obtains the righteous conduct. (The Gurmukh) knows the mystery of the Shabad, and inspires others to know it. O Nanak! Burning away (his) ego, (the Gurmukh) merges in the Lord. ||29|| The True Lord fashioned the earth for the sake of the Gurmukhs. There, he set in motion the play of creation and destruction. One who is filled with the Guru’s Shabad, enshrines love for the Lord. Attuned to the Truth, he goes to his (true, spiritual, etc.) Home with honor (i.e., he transcends the play of the “creation and destruction”). Without the True Shabad, no one receives honor. O Nanak! Without the Name, how can one be absorbed in the Truth? ||30|| To become the Gurmukh is obtaining the eight miraculous spiritual powers, and all wisdom. By becoming the Gurmukh, (one) crosses over the terrifying world-ocean (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ), and obtains true understanding. By becoming the Gurmukh, (one) knows the ways of truth and untruth By becoimg the Gurmukh, (one) knows Paravirti and Niravirti – ਪਰਵਿਰਤਿ ਨਿਰਵਿਰਤਿ. By becoming the Gurmukh, (one) crosses over, and carries others across (the world-ocean – ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) as well. O Nanak! By becoimg the Gurmukh (one) is emancipated through the Shabad. ||31|| (sggs 941).

In nutshell, a Gurmukh is a Living Liberated person – a person of True Understanding, situated at the platform of the Transcendental Consciousness. Hence, he is the Divine person, established in his True Being (Joti-Svaroopa) within. Internally he has surrendered his false ego-sense (Haumai) to his Pure Being with one hundred percent involvement of his body-mind-intellect personality. He has all those Divine virtues which can be found in a godly or a Holy person.

: (The one who has become the Gurmukh) realizes his own (True) Self; he dies in the Shabad, (and through the Shabad) he banishes Bikaars from his mind (sggs 430).
: Applying the Touchstone of the Shabad, by becoming the Gurmukh, the Gurmukh conqueres his mind (prevents it from falling in love with Maya, etc.). He fights with his mind (its evil inclinations: ਬਿਕਾਰ-ਬਿਰਤੀ), he settles with his mind (make his mind understand), and he becomes immersed (in the auspicious nature of: ਸ਼ੁਭ-ਬਿਰਤੀ) his mind (sggs 87).
: Upon becoming the Gurmukh, Intuitive Poise (Sahaj, ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ) awakens within; then his mind ascends to the Tenth Plane – Dasam Duaar (where nine holes of body have no effect). (In this State) there is no sleep or hunger (of the love of Maya); they dwell in the Peace (ਆਤਮਕ ਅਨੰਦ) of the Amrit Name of God. O Nanak, pain and pleasure do not afflict anyone, (in those hearts) where the Light of the Lord, the Supreme Soul, illuminates ||16|| (sggs 1414).
  • ਙਿਆਨੀ ਤਤੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੀ ॥੫॥: Unto whom God bestows His Grace, he, by becoming the Gurmukh, contemplates the essence of Reality ||5|| (sggs 251).
: The Gurmukh is blessed with the Divine Name, charity and inner purity (sggs 942).
: By becoming the Gurmukh, egotism (Haume) departs from within. By becoming the Gurmukh, no filth (of Haume or egotism) does not come and stick (sggs 230).
: By becoming the Gurmukh, the egotism (Haume) is kills, and (consequently) the mind becomes immaculately pure (sggs 424).
: O Nanak! The Divine Wisdom is obtained by becoming the Gurmukh, and the pitch darkness of ignorance is dispelled (sggs 512).

Spiritual Enlightenment is indicated to be the state of Realization of one’s True Nature, when one understands the relationship between the Supreme Reality and all aspects of creation and acknowledges the Absolute Supremacy of Truth. When spiritual Realization comes about in one’s consciousness, life’s joy or sorrow (i.e., duality) no longer affects that person. The Gurbani tells us to remain engaged in our daily, family life while always being one with Truth in our thoughts; just as a woman who has just become a mother is not distracted because of the new responsibility of caring for the child and continues to do her duties – both streams of work continue in her schedule without any clash.

Senses are akin to venomous serpents. Like snakes, the senses do not like to be restricted. Rather, they like to act not only loosely but also without any control. A Gurmukh controls these serpents like a snake- charmer, who never allows his snakes to act on their own.

: The Gurmukh, Spiritual Being, is a snake-charmer; he has trampled her (Maya) and thrown her down, and crushed her underfoot (sggs 510).
: Hopes and desires for transitory things are erased for who has become the Gurmukh; O Nanak; the Name alone keeps (him) free of the disease (of desires etc.) ||1|| (sggs 254).

Here the Gurbani provides us with a very clear definition as to what constitutes a Gurmukh.

CLEARLY, according to the Gurbani, to be a Gurmukh is not a question of heredity, family of birth, ancestry, race, region, social status, caste, creed, education, titles, peculiar robes or mere external appearance (ਨਿਰਾ ਬਾਹਰ ਦਾ ਦਿਖਾਵਾ); it is a question of Self-Realization!

Thus, to be a Gurmukh is like standing in a fire without getting burnt!
