Gurbani says focus on the Message

The Gurmat Giaan or Wisdom wisdom of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib (SGGS) urges us to focus on the Message (ਗੁਰ-ਬਚਨ, Gurmat, Upadesh, Giaan or Wisdom of the Guru‘s Shabad…)

  • ਗੁਰਿ ਕਹਿਆ ਸਾ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵਹੁ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਕਰਣੀ ਕਾਹੇ ਧਾਵਹੁ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਵਹੁ ॥੨੭॥: Do the deed ordained by the Gur (Naam Simran: remembering and living by the Gur-Giaan or Wisdom). Do not run away from the deed (ordained by) the Gur. O Nanak! Merge in the Truth through the Gurmat (Gur-Giaan or Wisdom). ||27|| (sggs 933).
  • ਗੁਰਿ ਕਹਿਆ ਸਾ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵਹੁ ॥ ਸਬਦੁ ਚੀਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਸਹਜ ਘਰਿ ਆਵਹੁ ॥ ਸਾਚੈ ਨਾਇ ਵਡਾਈ ਪਾਵਹੁ ॥੨॥: Do the deed that the Guru has told us to do (that deed is Naam Simran: remembering and living by the Gur-Giaan or Wisdom). (That Kaar is) Understand the Shabad (Naam, Giaan or Wisdom, Upadesh) and become established in the Natural State of Being (ਗਿਆਨ ਅਵਸਤਾ, ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ…). Through the True Naam (ਸਚ ਦਾ ਗਿਆਨ…), obtain glory (ਸੋਭਾ, ਵਡਿਆਈ…). ||2|| (sggs 832).

In other words, the Gurbani tells us that we need to focus on the Message (Gurmat Upadesh, Giaan or Wisdom of the Gur-Shabad…), understand it, and then live it in daily life.

  • ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਇ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ॥: By doing the Gur’s Kaar (Naam Simran: remembering and living by the Gur-Giaan or Wisdom), one realizes (All-pervading) Presence within. (sggs 420).
  • ਸਰੀਰੁ ਜਲਉ ਗੁਣ ਬਾਹਰਾ ਜੋ ਗੁਰ ਕਾਰ ਨ ਕਮਾਇ ॥: The body deprived of Virtues burns which does not do the (stated) Gur-Kaar (Naam Simran: remembering and living by the Gur-Giaan or Wisdom). (sggs 651).
  • ਮਤਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਰਤਨ ਜਵਾਹਰ ਮਾਣਿਕ ਜੇ ਇਕ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਿਖ ਸੁਣੀ ॥: If one hears the Gur-Sikhiaa (Giaan or Wisdom), then the gems, jewels and rubies (i.e., Virtues, Giaan or Wisdom…) awaken within the mind. (sggs 2).

To do ‘Gur kee Kaar‘ essentially is to live in accordance with the Gurmat (Wisdom, Upadesh or Way of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib, SGGS), whereby we allow the Gur-Shabad to guide our day-to-day life. Simply put: our reading and understanding of the Gur-Shabad will be deficient without allowing the Gur-Shabad to guide our daily life.

  • ਜਹ ਕਰਣੀ ਤਹ ਪੂਰੀ ਮਤਿ ॥ ਕਰਣੀ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਘਟੇ ਘਟਿ ॥੩॥: When one’s ‘Karanee’ (doing, performance, practice…) is right (according to the Gur-Giaan or Wisdom, then this would indicate) there is perfect understanding (ਸੂਝ-ਬੂਝ, ਅਕਲ). Without ‘Karanee’, (Understanding) remains deficient. ||3|| (sggs 25).

As a carpenter makes objects out of rough-hewn wood, similarly, the Guru shapes his disciple – Sikh – into a sterling Gurmukh who experiences Bliss (Anand) in living the Gurmat.

  • ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਾਰੁ ॥ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਪਰਵਾਰੈ ਸਾਧਾਰੁ ॥੮॥੧॥੩॥ : Following the Gurmat (living daily life according to the Giaan or Wisdom of the SGGS), one’s conduct (ਆਚਰਨ…) becomes excellent. Following the Gurmat, one finds a way to get rid of (Bikaar). O Nanak! Following the Gurmat, (one) becomes able to give (Naam’s) support to his entire family as well. ||8||1||3|| (sggs 832).
  • ਕਬੀਰ ਗੁਰੁ ਲਾਗਾ ਤਬ ਜਾਨੀਐ ਮਿਟੈ ਮੋਹੁ ਤਨ ਤਾਪ ॥: O Kabir! One is known to have been united with the Guru (i.e., Giaan or Wisdom, Virtues…), if your mind’s affliction or illness of worldly attachment is eradicated. (sggs 1374).

But the question is, why the majority of us (over 99.9 percent category) don’t focus on this? The Gurbani answers as follows:

  • ਜਿਨ ਕੇ ਚਿਤ ਕਠੋਰ ਹਹਿ ਸੇ ਬਹਹਿ ਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪਾਸਿ ॥ ਓਥੈ ਸਚੁ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਕੂੜਿਆਰਾ ਚਿਤ ਉਦਾਸਿ ॥ ਓਇ ਵਲੁ ਛਲੁ ਕਰਿ ਝਤਿ ਕਢਦੇ ਫਿਰਿ ਜਾਇ ਬਹਹਿ ਕੂੜਿਆਰਾ ਪਾਸਿ ॥ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਚੇ ਕੂੜੁ ਨ ਗਡਈ ਮਨਿ ਵੇਖਹੁ ਕੋ ਨਿਰਜਾਸਿ ॥ ਕੂੜਿਆਰ ਕੂੜਿਆਰੀ ਜਾਇ ਰਲੇ ਸਚਿਆਰ ਸਿਖ ਬੈਠੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪਾਸਿ ॥ ੨੬॥: Those human beings, whose minds are hard (ie, full of Bikaar…), cannot sit with Satiguru (Tru Wisdom-ਸਚਾ ਗਿਆਨ). Truth prevails there and the corrupt people feel mentally depressed (with Satigur)…  (sggs 314).

Therefore, it is highly emphasized in the Gurbani to be constantly attuned to the Gur-Shabad, to be in harmony with the Gur-Shabad, to live the Gur-Shabad in daily life…

  • ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਕਹਿਆ ਅੰਕਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸੂਚੇ ਸਾਚੋ ਭਾਵੈ ॥: (Those human beings) in whose mind abides the Gur (-Giaan or Wisdom), those human beings become immaculate within, they love the truth. (sggs 933).
  • ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਜਾਗੇ ਜਿਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਬੋਲਹਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਣੀ ॥: (Out of the slumber of Maya) by the grace of the Gur (-Giaan or Wisdom, only) those human beings awake in whom Naam abides who utter the Banee of Amrit (-Naam).  (sggs 920).

Hence, unequivocally, the Way of the Gurmat Giaan Wisdom of the SGGS is the Way of UNDERSTANDING. The Gurbani further confirms it as follows:

  • ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਪਸੂ ਭਏ ਬੇਤਾਲੇ ॥੬॥:Without understanding, people become beast (-nature) and demon ||6|| (sggs 224).

Baabaa Nanak further reminds us that without UNDERSTANDING, we all become perplexed. A perplexed person cannot live a Gurmukh Lifestyle.

  • ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਸਭ ਹੋਇ ਖੁਆਰ ॥: Without understanding, ALL are troubled (afflicted, distressed, perplexed…). (sggs 791).
  • ਇਤੁ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਚਲੇ ਭਾਈਅੜੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਹੈ ਸੁ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਇ ਜੀਉ ॥ ਤਿਆਗੇਂ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਮਤੜੀ ਵਿਸਾਰੇਂ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ਜੀਉ ॥: O bother! Walk on this Way (of the Gur Giaan or Wisdom) do the (stated) Gur-Kaar (i.e., Naam Simran: remembering and living by the Gur-Giaan or Wisdom). You give up the clumsy wisdom of your mind and forget the love of other (i.e., Maya, duality). (sggs 763).
