The Gurbani enshrined within Sri Guru Granth Sahib (SGGS) frequently uses similes, metaphors and examples of worms and maggots found in filth or manure to teach us that without imbibing the Gurbani’s Injunctions, life becomes a state of constant suffering and decay, distress and confusion, fear and pain, loss of moral and spiritual direction, sans of true purpose, enslavement of ego (Haumai) and vices/Bikaar.
What does the Gurbani say about a person who might be materially prosperous, affluent, socially of high status, politically powerful etc, but if he/she is bereft of adhering to the Divine Naam (without imbibing Giyan-Wisdom / Virtues / Hukam)?
According to the Gurbani, a person sans of the Divine Naam is like MAGGOTS/WORMS OF MANURE/FILTH/EXCREMENT (“ਵਿਸਟਾ ਕੇ ਕੀਰੇ”).
: A person may have beautiful bed, countless comforts, all kinds of enjoyments, mansion made of gold, pearls and rubies to wear, sandalwood fragrance for body, all pleasures of the mind ‘s desires, and no anxiety at all. However, if disconnected from the Path of the Creator, then (in spite of being successful) that person is like a maggot in manure. Without adhering to Naam (without living Giyan-Wisdom / Virtues / Hukam), how can he/she subdue his/her (bestial) mind?. (sggs 707).
The maggot
In fact, according to the SGGS, it’s the absence of Naam which constitutes one being of low caste That said, the real outcast (ਨੀਚ, Shoodar…) are those who are separated from the divine Naam. The very sense of being a human of such persons emanates from the filth they remain caged in:
: Without the Naam (without imbibing Giyan-Wisdom / Virtues / Hukam), all are low class, like maggots in manure. (sggs 426).
: Those who remain engrossed in the enjoyment of their beautifully decorated houses, pleasures of the mind and in the relishes of tasty foods, they never remember God; Nanak, they are just like the worms of filth. ||1|| (sggs 707).
The love or intoxication of Maya makes one indifferent to the fear or reverence of the Creator. As a result, one gets inflicted with vices/Bikaar. A very rare person escapes the intoxication of Maya and uses this Maya as his slave/servant. In fact, according to Bhagat Kabeer there is no difference between humans and animals if we humans are just limited to filling our belly!
: O brother, this Maya plays many kinds of enticing shows and due to the delusion and love for it, you have fallen into the dark pit of Maya. You indulge in so much pride/arrogance, as if you cannot be contained even in the sky, but the reality is that your belly is filled with ordure, bones and worms. For the sake of this extremely poisonous Maya, you run in all directions and snatch other’s wealth because you have been deceived by ignorance. (sggs 1388).
: Those who have not Internalized the Message of the Guru‘s Shabad; do not call them human beings; they are as dead animals and stupid. They have neither spiritual Giyan–Wisdom of spiritual Life nor Contemplation (Giyan Dhiaan); they have no love and affection for the Creator Within. (sggs 1418).
The Shabad Guru (SGGS) has given valuable teachings to humanity by using words like Vishta (or Bishta), Charam (skin), Asat (bone), Murdar (carcass, dead body), Karang (carcass,skeleton), Durgandh (rotten smell) etc. The Gurmat Wisdom of the SGGS Teaches Sikhs (learners, seekers-ਸਿਖਿਆਰਥੀ) that the human body is fragile, and fleeting — just a PILE OF BONES, FILTH AND MAGGOT.
: You are nothing but ordure, bones and blood wrapped in skin. It is upon this filthy bundle you have based your conceit. If you could realize God within, then you would become pure. (sggs 374).
- ਚਲਤ ਕਤ ਟੇਢੇ ਟੇਢੇ ਟੇਢੇ ॥ ਅਸਤਿ ਚਰਮ ਬਿਸਟਾ ਕੇ ਮੂੰਦੇ ਦੁਰਗੰਧ ਹੀ ਕੇ ਬੇਢੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ ਰਾਮ ਨ ਜਪਹੁ ਕਵਨ ਭ੍ਰਮ ਭੂਲੇ ਤੁਮ ਤੇ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਦੂਰੇ ॥ ਅਨਿਕ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਿ ਇਹੁ ਤਨੁ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਰਹੈ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਪੂਰੇ ॥੨॥ : Why do you walk crooked ways? You are nothing more than a bundle of bones, wrapped in skin, filled with ordure (excrement, etc.); you give off a rotten smell! ||1||Pause|| (sggs 1124).
: O my mind, why are you so puffed up with false ego-sense? Inside this body are foul odors, filth and impurities, this body of yours you see is also perishable. ||1||Pause|| (sggs 530).
: Accursed is that body of that person who recognizes anybody else except God, and is nothing but bones, filth and worms. ll1ll (sggs 1228).
The Gurbani’s counsel is not to become the slave of the outer domination. Because, one who draws on the energy of the outside is a slave of the senses. There is the mistaken notion that to be happy one has to be rich.
The spirituality of the Shabad (SGGS) is the Sikhi of the self, for the self, and by the self. Hence, there is NO concept of transfer of blessing in the Sikhi / Gurmat of Guru Nanak, the progenitor Guru of Sikhi. The Gurmat commands:
: Just as the worms of filth remain in the filth, similarly (without Internalizing Naam) the foolish Manmukh persons (Unenlightened) remain consumed in the darkness of ignorance. ||3|| (sggs 601).
: For me God is my life breath, honor, pride, father, son, relative, and everything. The body of a person who recognizes anybody else except God becomes accursed because then his/her human body is nothing but bones, dirt, and worms. ll1ll (sggs 1228).
Yet, on account of duality, most of us inexorably chase the illusive or mirage like enchanting world. As time and again pointed out in the SGGS, to live in a mere duality is the man’s sad fall into a low state of the mind and suffering, here and now.
The manure
‘Filth‘ in the mind (‘Bhangaar’-ਭੰਗਾਰ) is the manure — inner garbage or ‘Mail-ਮੈਲ’ of vices/Bikaar (i.e lust, anger, greed, attachment, and pride along with their countless variations such as falsehood, stubborn mindedness, selfishness, slander, and so on).
: O Kabeer! What good is it to appear like a devotee of Vishnu, and wear four Maalaa (rosary)? On the outside, you (pretend to) look like pure gold (i.e., pious, holy, pure, Mahaatamaa…); but on the inside, you are stuffed with filth or Bhangaar (vices/Bikaar: i.e. lust, anger, greed, attachment, pride and their numerous variations…). (sggs 1372).
: The Manmukh (UN-enlightened mind) remains entrapped in the darkness of Maya and unaware of the Divine presence within. Such UN-enlightened person slanders others and practices utter falsehood. Such person is like a worm in the filth and in the filth he is consumed. ||3|| (sggs 364).
- ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਅੰਧਾ ਅੰਧੁ ਅੰਧਾਰਾ ॥ ਬਿਸਟਾ ਕੇ ਕੀੜੇ ਬਿਸਟਾ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਬਿਸਟਾ ਮਾਹਿ ਪਚਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੫॥ : Sans of Giyan-Wisdom, one remains completely mentally blind (i.e. total ignorance of Naam). Without Giyan-Wisdom, such ignorant person is like Maggots of Manure/FILTH/EXCREMENT, they gather filth and are consumed in filth. ||5|| (sggs 116).
This ‘filth’ (‘Mail-ਮੈਲ’) of the mind will not go away by itself. Also it cannot be removed by chanting ‘Raam Raam‘, ‘Waheguru Waguru’, counting beads, mere ritualistic reading of the SGGS or bowing in front of SGGS etc. In short, mere talk, mental trickery, UN-Gurmat Karamkaand, or phony show of religiosity (Bhekh-ਭੇਖ or religious garbs) etc. will not do the trick.
: Nanak, to desire anything ‘other’ than God is like being consumed like a worm of filth; it is nothing but ruining of spiritual life. ||3|| (sggs 848).
: (Those who have not met the Satiguru – true Giyan-Wisdom, and realized the Naam) remain immersed in the filth (of vices/Bikaar), and they wander repeatedly through the painful cycle of spiritual or moral birth and death — mind’s different behavioral forms. (sggs 40).
: Without the Guru (i.e. Enlightenment of the Shabad), there is total darkness of ignorance (of Naam). They fall to vices/Bikaar, and make entreaties – but there is no one help. They always remain afflicted with ailments arising from the vices/Bikaar and suffer like maggots in the filth. ||7|| (sggs 125).
Naam is the Remedy
The Gurbani (SGGS) empowers humanity with the Divine Naam (life of conforming to Divine Giyan / Virtues / Hukam). In the Sikhi of Guru Nanak, the progenitor Guru of Sikhi, living by Naam is the gist/essence of Sikhi Way of life — the Eternal Remedy.
- ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜੀ ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ॥ ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਆਰਾਧੀਐ ਪੂਰਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ : O Creator, remembering and living Your Naam (abidance in Divine Giyan-Wisdom / Virtues / Hukam) relieves me from all sufferings (Dukh). (And the Naam is) to remember live the perfect Satguru’s “Giyan-ਗਿਆਨੁ” (Wisdom, Upadesh, Counsel) throughout a day. ||1||Pause|| (sggs 218).
- ਹਉ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਬਲਿਹਾਰਣੈ ਜਿਨਾ ਨਾਮੇ ਲਗਾ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥ ਸੇਈ ਸੁਖੀਏ ਚਹੁ ਜੁਗੀ ਜਿਨਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਖੁਟੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥੩॥ : I am a sacrifice to those whose love remains in the Divine Naam (abidance in Divine Giyan-Wisdom / Virtues / Hukam). Those people remain eternally happy who have the infinite treasure of the Divine Naam that never runs out. ||3|| (sggs 26).
It cures all ills of the defective mind, beastly mindset (ਪਸੁ-Pasu), Demonic mindset (ਪ੍ਰੇਤ-Preyt), UN-enlightened mindset (ਮੁਘਦ-Mughad) ego hardened mindset (ਪਾਥਰ-Pathar), Manmukh-Saakat-Mayadhaaree mindset, and so on.
Devoid of Naam, the mind cannot be controlled. And in the face of an unrestrained mind, worldly possessions, wealth, powers etc are shallow.
The victims of unrestrained mind are weak. They can conquer others but not themselves.
: the Divine Naam (abidance in Divine Giyan-Wisdom / Virtues / Hukam) is the medicine; with it, no disease afflicts. (sggs 814).
: Those who have forsaken the Divine Naam (life of abidance in Divine Giyan / Virtues / Hukam), no matter who else they contemplate. They are like maggots/worms in the filth/manure/excrement, because they have been deceived by the thieves-like worldly entanglements. Nanak, the Divine Naam should never be forgotten, because greed for anything else is useless. ||2|| (sggs 1247).
Due to their unrestrained mind, people are like maggots/worms in manure, they waste away their lives without ever perceiving the cage they inhabit.
The filthy mind may possess all comforts in life but remain morally and spiritually impoverished.
: (Unenlightened Manmukh) do not internalize the Enlightening Message embedded in the Shabad, they are attached to the love of duality. They are like worms in the filth, they fall in the filth (of vices/Bikaar) and are consumed in there. ॥2॥ (sggs 28).
: Cursed is the food and cursed are the clothes of those (i.e. Manmukh: Unenlightened mind) who are attached to the love of duality (things and entities other than the Divine Naam). Just like-maggots in manure, they remain imbued with love for manure-like Maya and keep suffering in spiritual birth and death. ||5|| (sggs 1347).
- ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅੰਧੇ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥ ਬਿਸਟਾ ਕਾ ਕੀੜਾ ਬਿਸਟਾ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਮੰਨੇ ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ : The Manmukh (spiritually Unenlightened person) finds no place for the peace of mind. He/she remains engrossed in vices/Bikar like a worm of filth. ||1|| One who live in harmony with the Hukam is considered successful – realize God within. Because he receives the insignia of Naam through the Guru’s Shabad. ||1||Pause|| (sggs 1175).
That said, the real Sikhs of Guru Nanak and his core Gurmat (Way of the SGGS) do not engage in robotic or ritual reading of the Gurbani to satiate their fat ego (Haumai) or for validation. They read it to reflect upon its injunctions and then imbibe them — knowing, understanding, accepting, believing, habitualizing, inculcating, and finally BECOMING THE GURBANI.
: The Satgur’s Bani is the enlightenment — the Creator aligned and the Creator Connecting; BECOME THE GURBANI (i.e. by imbibing it become the enlightenment that the Gurbani is). (sggs 304).
: (O brother!) do you know what kind of people are those who never forget the Divine Naam (live adhering to Divine Giyan / Virtues / Hukam)? Do not consider there to be any difference between them and the Akal, they become earthly emulation of Akal. ||1|| (sggs 397).
Also, in the Gurmat of Guru Nanak Naam is not Tant-Mant or empty chanting of some words (e.g. “Waheguru Waheguru” or “Ram Ram” etc) in illusion of fulfilling baser desires, or obtain spiritual solace etc. It is a battle with the self waged every moment. Without Naam, the battle to conquer the bestial mind cannot be won. In other words, without internalizing the Naam the mind’s beastly nature (“ਕਰਤੂਤਿ ਪਸੂ ਕੀ ਮਾਨਸ ਜਾਤਿ”) cannot be overcome.
: The entire world goes about CHANTING God’s name, but none realized Him. (sggs 555).
: (If a person) lives in a broken hut, his clothes are all tattered; he is not of high caste or status, no respect, and he wanders around (due to misfortunes and no respect). He has neither a friend, nor a beloved, nor wealth, nor beauty, nor the support of even his own kinsmen. (In spite of such misfortunes) he is still the king of this entire Creation because he lives the Naam (abidance in Giyan-Wisdom / Virtues / Hukam) by keeping it within his mind. Because the Creator is benevolent upon such Enlightened person, his Giyan-Wisdom redeems mind of those around him. ||7|| (sggs 707).
