Eyes that can Perceive God’s Direct Darshan are Different

Realization of “Divine Darshan” is the ultimate Spiritual Goal. The Gurbani enshrined within the Sri Guru Granth Sahib (SGGS) teaches us that the One Creator is of the sublime Saroop (‘Nirankaar‘ or Formless) — without form-shape-color (without ‘Roopu-ਰੂਪੁ’, ‘Raekh-ਰੇਖ’, and ‘Rangu-ਰੰਗੁ’). This ‘Nirankaar’ Saroop of the Omnipresent God cannot be seen with the external eyes (physical eyes).

: The Creator has no form, no shape, no color and is free from the three qualities of Maya (i.e. Rajo, Tamo, Sato). One who understands such a Formless vision of God is Enlightened, because of which he/she can live life happily (free from all illusions). ||1|| (sggs 283).
: O Creator, You have no form, shape/feature, social class or race. (sggs 1096).

Is it possible to have a direct experience of the Vision of God with external eyes?

God is described as without form-shape-color etc (without ‘Roopu-ਰੂਪੁ’, ‘Raekh-ਰੇਖ’, and ‘Rangu-ਰੰਗੁ’ etc) in Gurbani. It is NOT POSSIBLE to see God of Gurmat with external or physical eyes.

In order to see an object, three things are necessary: Form, time and space. But, the Divine – Dib or Divya – as indicated in the Gurbani is Formless, Timeless and Unlimited. Furthermore, this Formless Principle is said to be inaccessible and invisible to the physical senses and the mind; for He is beyond time and space. This leads to the following questions: How can then one have “Darshan” of the Sublime and Eternal Essence which is Transcendental? If our physical senses and the mind are incapable of seeing this Formless Spiritual Factor as reported in the Gurbani, then what does Gurbani really mean by seeing the Vision of God’s “Darshan“?

  • ਹਰਿ ਜੀ ਸੂਖਮੁ ਅਗਮੁ ਹੈ ਕਿਤੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਕਟੀਐ ਅਚਿੰਤੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥੧॥ : God is invisible and inaccessible, so how can one ever realize Him? When through the Guru’s Shabad (i.e. Guru’s Upadesh, Giyan-Wisdom, teachings, counsel, guide), the doubt is dispelled, then intuitively God’s presence in the mind is realized. ||1|| (sggs 756).
: My Beloved God is deep within my Heart. How can I obtain His Divine Vision (sggs 80)?
: God neither carries a conch, Chakra (a steel disc), bludgeon nor God is of dark skin like Krishna. God’s FORM is amazing (i.e. indescribable) and God is NOT BORN. (sggs 1359).

Concocted stories such as God giving a vision to Dhanna Bhagat (ਧੰਨਾ ਭਗਤ) or someone else are pure lies, fabricated gossip. Such false stories are the deception of fraudulent religious leaders and the illiterate/selfish Pujaaree clique disguise as Sikhs. The principle of Guru Nanak’s unique and revolutionary Gurmat is:

: O the renunciate, God, who can only be experienced, has never been seen by anyone with these external eyes. (sggs 1104).
: (God‘s form) is difficult to describe any way, even if you explain it again and again, you don’t understand (because no one knows). Many people, with great effort, spend day and night repeatedly describing God’s form. God could be seen if He had some form, but He has no particular form or personality (God has no five-element body). Difficult and easy places, the Creator is the cause of all causes. Nanak, it is difficult to describe God’s form and is not understood no matter how many times it is tried. ||2|| (sggs 1239-1240).

Therefore, to say it is possible to attain the vision of God with external or physical eyes is to contradict the unwavering principle of Gurmat of Guru Nanak. It is the firm principle of Gurmat that God, the universal energy/power that pervades every particle of His creation, can never be seen in a five-element body form. It is a mistake that instead of considering the entire Guru’s decree (spirit of the entire Gurbani-SGGS), we consider only a single line as the principle of Gurmat. Being in the form of poetry, understanding the Gurmat-Giyan requires great caution, unselfish motives, concentration, and constant practice. Needs to be reflected upon again and again.

: One within whom is the love for the Guru (i.e. Shabad, Upadesh, Giyan-Wisdom), beholds the blessed vision of God. One who is in love with the Guru’s word, gets to realize God. One who becomes the Gurmukh (enlightened/Guru-Shabad-Oriented mindset), within his/her heart/mind is lighted the lamp of Divine Giyan-Wisdom and always experiences the Divine light in everyone. ||15|| The Divine Giyan-Wisdom is spiritual food which is extremely sweet and delicious. Whoever has tasted it, has direct experience of God’s blessed vision. Experiencing the blessed vision, they realize God and renounce the love for worldly desires; their mind always remains immersed in remembering God. ||16|| (sggs 1032).

Eyes that see God’s Vision-Darshan are different

The edict of the Gurbani is: Those eyes are different (ਹੋਰ ਕਿਸਮ ਦੀਆ) that behold or realize the ‘Nirankaar, or the Formless Creator.

: I have seen God, the light of the world with my own eyes, still my intense desire to behold Him does not get quenched. Nanak, different are those eyes with which my beloved God is seen. ||1|| (sggs 577 and 1100).

Having said that, what are those eyes which behold God (Universal Energy…) – Divine Vision, Divine Darshan?

Those eyes that can see the Darshan or Deedaar (ਦੀਦਾਰ) of the Divine Beloved are the Inner Eyes that are free of any ‘Sutak‘ (i.e. mind’s defilement, impurity etc.).

What are these Inner Eyes consist of?

The Inner Eyes = Eyes of Gurbani’s Giyan-Wisdom – Spiritual Eyes – Eyes Bibek Budh of the Gurbani, Eyes of Shabad-Surt, Eyes of the Naam, Eyes of the Guru’s Giyan-Wisdom, Eyes of the Gurmat, and so on.

  • ਜਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਦਰਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਿ ਕਹਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਜਿਨਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਦਿਤਾ ਦਿਖਾਇ ॥ : What can anyone say about the all pervading God, who cannot be seen? I am dedicated to my Guru (i.e. Guru Shabad: Upadesh, Giyan-Wisdom, teachings, counsel, guide)), who has revealed God in my heart/mind itself. ||52|| (sggs 937).
: I dedicate my life to the True Guru (true Giyan-Wisdom); meeting whom, I have come to cherish God. He taught me and given me the healing eye-drops of spiritual Wisdom so that with my spiritual eyes, I visualize the reality of the world. (sggs 470).
: One who becomes the Gurmukh (enlightened/Guru-Shabad-Oriented mindset), everything becomes apparent to his/her spiritually enlightened eyes. (sggs 1045).
  • ਗੁਰਹਿ ਦਿਖਾਇਓ ਲੋਇਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ ਈਤਹਿ ਊਤਹਿ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਤੂੰਹੀ ਤੂੰਹੀ ਮੋਹਿਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਕਾਰਨ ਕਰਨਾ ਧਾਰਨ ਧਰਨਾ ਏਕੈ ਏਕੈ ਸੋਹਿਨਾ ॥੨॥ ਸੰਤਨ ਪਰਸਨ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਦਰਸਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਖਿ ਸੁਖਿ ਸੋਇਨਾ ॥੩॥੪॥੧੪੪॥ : (O God) the Guru (enlightening Giyan-Wisdom) has helped me to behold You with my own eyes. ||1||pause|| O Omnipresent God, you are present everywhere, in each and every heart, it only You alone. ||1|| O God, You alone are the cause of causes and the support of the entire universe. ||2|| Nanak, I humbly bow to the Guru, by whose grace I am blessed with God’s sight and remain immersed in bliss. ||3||4||144|| (sggs 407).

Simply put: When Bibek Budh or discerning intellect has realized the enlightening Message embedded in the Shabad, it becomes the Inner Eyes, and enjoys the Darshan or Deedaar (ਦੀਦਾਰ) of its Mool (Source, Jot) within. No wonder the Gurbani calls Bibek the Guru!

  • ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਮੈ ਸੋ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ਬਿਬੇਕੋੁ ॥੪॥੫॥ : Says Kabeer, I have found that Guru, whose Name is Bibeko’ (Wisdom, Discerning Intelligence…). ||4||5|| (sggs 793).

To the contrary, external/physical eyes – because of ‘Sutak – can only see Maya!

This is the reason the Gurbani (SGGS) counsels us that the Darshan or Deedaar (ਦੀਦਾਰ) of the Formless cannot be accomplished with the external/physical eyes.

Aptly, the Gurbani asserts that Darshan or Deedaar (ਦੀਦਾਰ) of the Formless can only be done with the Inner Eyes.

: See without eyes (i.e. if we look at the world by removing lust from the eyes etc.), hear without ears (i.e. if we keep the ears from the habit of hearing slander etc.); walk without feet (i.e. if we keep our feet from running in the wrong direction etc.), work without hands (i.e. if we use our hands without doing harm to others etc.); speak without the tongue (i.e. if we remove the habit of slandering others from the tongue etc.); this is how one dies alive. O Nanak! When one understands/recognizes Hukam (System-Rule-Law of Nature), then one realizes Truth (‘Khasam’-Master etc.). (sggs 139).

In fact, ‘Deed‘ as in ‘Deedar‘ simply means eyes (Inner Eyes).

: Those who are immersed in the love of Rabb and imbued with the divine vision (they are the real human beings). But those who have forgotten the Naam are just a burden on earth || Pause|| (sggs 488).

In a nutshell, the Inner Eyes are the Eyes of Shabad-Surt

: How can a person without feet, without arms and without eyes  run to embrace God? Let the Fear of God (respect/obedience/conformance with Hukam) be your feet, and let His Love be your hands; let His Shabad-Surt be your eyes. (sggs 139).

A person having developed such Inner Eyes of Shabad-Surt is the Enlightened person (Gurmukh Mindset).

Thus, the key to experiencing the “Divine Darshan” is in becoming Gurmukh (Enlightened/Guru-Shabad-Oriented). According to the Gurbani, only Manmukhs (UN-enlightened) get deluded by their mental defects, who think that the perishable is imperishable and fleeting permanent. The truth is that the Creator alone exists, rest is transitory Leelaa (Cosmic Play). In that sense, the duality and egoism do not exist any more than water exists in the mirage! Therefore, the Gurbani urges us to abandon our false visions, concepts and notions which are not based on facts. Instead, we are instructed to clear the mind, and rest in the Purified Vision which is based on the truth.

: Jo gurmukh naam dhiaaeide tin darsan deejai (sggs 726).
: Jo ratte deedaar saeee sach haak (sggs 959).
: By becoming Enlightened (Gurmukh Mindset), while still living in this world, the innocent soul-bride sees the sight of her Husband (God). ||1|| (sggs 78).

With the departure of false ego-sense and its defects, all concepts and notions (duality as well as non-duality) cease to be; then one comes to abide in the Purified Vision within, instantaneously. In that Blissful Realm, there is no duality.

When the mind sees its True Nature (“Divine Darshan”), it is not experience of one thing discovering another. It’s the self experiencing the Self, or its the mind experiencing the Mind. In other words, upon awakening of this Sublime State (Jot Saroop)  within, there is no separation between the experience, experiencer and experiencing left; there is no separation between the seer, seen and seeing left; there is no separation between the knower, known and knowing left; there is no separation between the body, perceiver and perceiving left; there is no separation between the mind, feeler and emotions left; there is no separation between the intellect, thinker and thoughts left; there is no separation between the witness, witnessed and witnessing left; there is no how, when, and where left: All is at all times, beyond the comprehension of the body-mind-intellect. This is the State of “Divine Darshan”. In essence, “Divine Darshan” is none other than living in unbroken Unconditioned Consciousness, our True Nature (or Shabad-Surt).

: (One imbued in God’s  Naam: abidance in Divine Giyan-Wisdom / Virtues / Hukam) gets direct experience of God’s Darshan, and all his/her doubt, attachment and deceit/pretensions. (sggs 380).
: By opening the doors (of spiritual ignorance, love of Maya…), when God is realized within then we don’t go through the rounds of spiritual birth and death in life. ||1|| (sggs 383).

Eyes of Shabad-Vichaar, Shabad-Surt

Shabad Vichaar (Reflections on the Gurbani or Gur-Shabad, Spiritual Inquiry into the Gur-Shabad, churning the Gurbani etc.) is given a prominence priority or importance in the innovative and unique Sikhi or Gurmat of Guru Nanak.

Having said that, Eyes of Shabad-Vichaar = Eyes of Shabad-Surt = Eyes of Divine Darshan.

  • ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਲਗੋ ਮਨਿ ਮੀਠਾ ॥ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਤਾ ਤੇ ਮੋਹਿ ਡੀਠਾ ॥੩॥ : The Guru’s Shabad (i.e. Guru’s Upadesh, Giyan-Wisdom, teachings, counsel, guide) is pleasing to my mind. Through the Guru’s Shabad I realize the Supreme God. ||3|| (sggs 187).
: Everybody in this world physically see the Satgur. But one can not be ‘Mukt‘ (liberated etc.) just by seeing the Satguru until and unless the Message within the Shabad is Reflected upon and lived ( i.e. nothing is will be accomplished). Filth of Haumai (false ego-sense) is not removed until love for the Naam (Giyan-Wisdom / Virtues /  Hukam) does not get affixed in the mind. (sggs 594).
: The Shabad-Vichaar (Reflection on the Gur-Shabad) is the sweet Amrit. One can always enjoy it by eradicating false ego-sense from within. (sggs 424).
: The Shabad is Amrit; the Hari Baanee is Amrit (sggs 119).
: The Gur-Shabad (Gur-Giyan, Upadesh, Wisdom, ਸਿਖਿਆ) is the Amrit; by understanding, internalizing and applying the enlightening Message contained within it) longing for Maya is quenched (we avoid spiritual death, and realize God within). (sggs 35).
: (O my mind) keep drinking the Amrit of the Shabad. (sggs 891).
: For a Gurmukh (Enlightened Mind), Shabad is the Amrit. (sggs 932).
: Marvelous is the Bani (hymns of SGGS/Enlightening Message of the Shabad), nothing equals it as it is the voice of the Formless One. (sggs 515).
: Marvelous is the Bani (hymns of SGGS/Enlightening Message of the Shabad) of Truth that brings about Union with Truth. (sggs 514).

A Mind having such Inner eyes of Shabad-Vichaar is called in the Gurbani the Gurmukh (Enlightened Mindset).

: Marvelous is the Bani (hymns of SGGS/Enlightening Message of the Shabad) of Truth, a Gurmukh (Enlightened/Gueu-Shabad-Oriented Mindset) has sought it and found it. (sggs 514).
  • ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਚੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਵਹੁ ॥ ਥਿਰੁ ਘਰਿ ਬੈਠੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਅਪਨਾ ਪਾਵਹੁ ॥੨॥ : I must always live my life by the true Guru’s Shabad (Giyan-Wisdom), With this steady state of my mind, I would realize Creator within my mind. ||2|| (sggs 386).

  1. Dear Brother Harvinder Singh Ji, thank you for taking the time to comment on this post.

    “This site has been up for last 20 years…….Amazing..
    I just stumbled upon this site just few months ago.
    I wonder, why it did not pop up in previous searches.”

    It has been about that long!
    Time flies…
    Briefly, the website (“Reflections On Gurbani”) was initially started in the early 1990s. Then, a few years later, it was moved from its non-domain location to its own domain (gurbani.org).
    Since then, if one were to search the term “gurbani” on the internet, it consistently has been showing up in the top internet searches!
    Since its inception, this website always remains non-commercial and non-political.
    The common theme of this website always has been to grasp the Spiritual Essence of the Gurbani.
    This “Gurbani Blog” feature was added to the website a few years back.
    Bhul Chuk Maaf Ji.
