FALSE ALLIANCES

There can never be any alliance (ਜੋੜ) between the devotees (ਭਗਤ, Gurmukh...)
and the worldly people (ਦੁਨੀਆਦਾਰ). (sggs 145).
<><><><>

Alliance implies association, affinity, union, bond, connection or attachment (Dharhaa, Sambandh, Jarhu or Moh) between families, states, parties, individuals, and so on. As the worldly alliances are based on subject-object relationship, they are all in hazards of duality ("Doojaa Bhaav"); representing the blind-mind with its offspring of wicked sense-tendencies. Therefore, inner attachment to them leads only to more hypocrisy and delusion.

Duality is Maya, relativity, illusion, ignorance or corruption of the deluded consciousness. Which is none other than the false self (egoity, selfishness, "I-ness" and "my-ness"...). In other words, man's all worldly alliances are functioning of his physical self with its formidable foes like lust, anger, greed, attachment, self-conceit, enviousness and stubborn mindedness (whose variations can be innumerable). As a consequent of these sense bolsheviks, one cannot see things in their proper perspective.

Accordingly, man's all worldly alliances are declared by the Gurbani (Sri Guru Granth Sahib, SGGS) to be false; for they are all bent toward worldly enjoyment. In the end, they turn into bloody tragedies. The edict of the Gurbani is that, in selfishness, one cannot be spiritual, objective, honest, truthful, moral, righteous, kind, compassionate, humble, open-minded, good, satisfied, loving, pure-minded, patience, kind, desireless, detached, meditative, harmonious, wise, balanced-minded and God fearing.

: Mithiaa doojaa bhaau dharhe bahi paavai. Paraayaa shidar atkalai aapnaa ahankaar vadhaavai. Jaisaa beejai tesaa khaavai: In the false love of duality, people sit and form alliances. They complain about other peoples’ faults, while their own self-conceit only increases. As they plant, so will they harvest (sggs 366).
: Jhoothaa maaeiaa kaa subhu sor (sggs 178).
Koor kriyaa urjhio sabh hee jag. Sree bhagvaan ko bhed na paaio: Entire world is entangled in false practices; people do not know God (Guru Gobind Singh Jee)

Selfishness is indicative of animal-nature; which is ruled by instinct to survive, not by discriminative intellect, reasoning, or judgment (Bibek Budhi). In animal kingdom, alliances can be seen between tiny ants to mighty elephants. Because of human selfishness (animal-nature), the worldly alliances only beget more corruption, fraud, crookedness, falsehood, abuse, promiscuity, meanness, conflicts, disharmony, danger, arguments, differences, misappropriations, and so on. The Gurbani sums it up as follows:

: Kalijuga mahi dharre panch chor jhagarraae: In Kalijuga, the five thieves (i.e., all evil passions or Bikaar) instigate alliances and conflicts (sggs 366).
: Eh sbh dharhe maya moh pasaaree. Maya kayu loojhahi gaavaaree: All these alliances are mere extensions of the love of Maya. Only fools argue over Maya (sggs 366).
: Jhooth tharhe kari pashotaahi. Thir na rahe mani khot kamaahi: Making false alliances, the mortals repent and regret in the end. Those who practice falsehood will not last (sggs 366).
: Maya mad maataa hoshee baataa milan na jaaee bharam dharhaa: Intoxicated with the wine of Maya, the mortal babbles on about trivial affairs; giving in to the illusion, he cannot meet the Lord (sggs 924).
: Daasee sangat prabhoo tiaagi eae karam hamaare: I am worthless. I associate with Maya, your hand-maiden, and I renounce You, God; such are my actions (sggs 809).
: Kaam krodh lobh mohu nit jhagarate jhagaraaeiaa: Lust, anger, greed and emotional attachment bring continual conflict and strife (sggs 984).
: Jah dekhaa tah jevaree maya kaa sanbandhu: Wherever (I) look, there (I see) the rope of attachment to Maya. (sggs 551).
: Binu boojhai pasu bhaye betaale ||6||: Without understanding, people become beast (-nature) and demon ||6|| (sggs 224).
: Kartoot pasoo kee manas jaat: Men belong to the human species, but they act like animals (sggs 267).
: Manmukh tatu na jaananee pasoo maahi samaanaa ||3|| (sggs 1009).
: Moolu na boojhahi aapanaa se pasooaa se dhor jeeou: Those who do not understand their own Mool (Source, Origin, Jot...); they are beasts and they are cattle (i.e., great fools of animal intellect-ਡੰਗਰ ਬੁਧੀ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਹਾਂ ਮੂਰਖ)! (sggs 751).

Included in the false alliances is man's entanglements with the external religions of complex adherents and antagonists. As witnessed by the human history, the end result of such entanglements is more and more selfishness, falsehood, violence, hatred, cruelty, meanness, abuse, evil passions, ill will, unkindness, harshness, destructive instinct, false pride, arrogance, revengefulness, wickedness, littleness of mind, partiality, moroseness, bitterness, dissatisfaction, fanaticism, fundamentalism, communalism, divisions, wars, holocausts and killing in the name of God.

: Karam dharam sabh bandhanaa paap punn sanabandh (sggs 551).
: Mann kaa jhoothaa jhooth kamaavai: False or corrupt mind practices falsehood (sggs 948).
: Dhaavan paavan koor kamaavan ih bidhi karat audh tann jaaree. Karam dharm sanjam such nemaa chanchal sang sagal bidh haaree: People run around practicing falsehood, thus wasting their body. In this way, by associating with the fickle Maya, they give up virtous Karma, Dharma (truthfulness and righteousness), self-discipline, inner purity and vows (sggs 1388).
: Dustee Sabhaa vigucheeai bikh vaatee jeevan baadi ||3||: (Associating with) Dushat Sabhaa, (one is) plundered and ruined. (Because) in the mouth (of the Dushat people) is poison (ਫਿੱਕੇ ਬੋਲ-ਰੂਪ, etc.) and their lives are useless ||3|| (sggs 1343).

Alliances are also forged between parents and children. Many times, one parent makes alliances with children to alienate the other parent! Alliances are made between friends, relatives, parties and countries to further the self-interest of members involved. Politicians makes alliances with their financial supporters, so that when elected, they can further their own selfish agenda, as well as that of their supporters.

: Kis hee dharhaa keeaa mitar sut naali bhaaee..: Some form alliances with friends, children and siblings. Some form alliances with in-laws and relatives. Some form alliances with chiefs and leaders for their own selfish motives (sggs 366).
: Puttr kalattr lok grih banitaa maya sanabandhehee: Children, spouses, men and women in one's household, are all bound by Maya (sggs 609).

: Manmukhaa keree dosatee Maya kaa sanabandh: Friendship with the material beings (Manmukhs-self-willed...) is an alliance with Maya—illusion, ignorance, and so on (sggs 959).
: Oudiaan basanam sansaaram sanabandhee savaan siaal kharah ...: Living in the world, it is like a wild jungle. One's relatives are (or one's nature is ) like dogs, jackals and donkeys. Caught in this difficult place, the mind is intoxicated with the wine of emotional attachment; the five unconquered thieves (all evil passions) lurk there. The mortals wander lost in worldly love and emotional attachment, fear and doubt; thus they are caught in the sharp, strong noose of egotism. The ocean of worldly objects is full of fire of desires; it's terrifying and impassable. The distant shore is so far away; it cannot be reached. Meditate on the Divine in the company of the true and the wise; O Nanak, by His Grace, we are saved by Divine Name, or Lotus Feet ||58|| (sggs 1359).

Alliances are also made between nations for variety of reasons. For example, economic alliances between the "most industrialized" or "most powerful" or "most rich" nations ensure wealthy nations to remain wealthy and the poor nations to remain at bottom of the barrel. Defense alliances between nations serve as a tool for waging wars or fighting wars with other nations, who do not agree with their selfish agenda or philosophy.

: Kabeer dharatee saadh kee tusakar baisahi gaahi: Kabeer, the earth belongs to the Holy, but it is being occupied by thieves (sggs 1375).
: Putru kaltru nit vekhai vigasai mohi maya. : Gazing on his children and his wife, the man is pleased and attached to Maya. Stealing the wealth of his own country and other lands, he brings it home and feeds them. In the end, hatred and conflict well up, and no one can save him (sggs 1249-1250).
: Hayu thagwaarhaa thagge des: I am a robber; I rob the world (sggs 24).
: Kar parpanch jagat kayu dahkai apno udar bharai: Practicing deception, you cheat the world, and so you fill your belly (sggs 990).
...: Raaj maal roop jaat joban panjay thag. aynee thageeN jag thagi-aa kinai na rakhee laj ...: Royal power, wealth (greed or selfishness), beauty (lust), social status (pride of superiority) and youth (blind passion) are the five thieves. These thieves have plundered the world; no one's honor has been spared. But these thieves themselves are robbed, by those who surrender to God (sggs 1288).

The Gurbani's edict is: if there is a worldly alliance, there is selfishness. Selflessness and worldly alliances cannot coexist. As indicated in the Gurbani, it's the man's blind attachment to his selfish alliances that cloud his mind-mirror; veiling the Reality from him — his Unconditioned Nature.

Such alliances are said to be of no avail. Because, in reality, there can be no union between the love of the worldliness and the Love of the Reality. In other words, there can be no alliance between falsehood and the Truth. Just as there can be no alliance between the swans and the crows, or between the thorny bush and adjacent banana plant, or between the "Bhagat" (True Being) and the "Sansaaree" (worldly, material, or selfish being)! The Gurbani therefore asks us to detach from all worldly alliances; for everything we see will perish.

: Balan bartan kou sanabandh chit aaiaa: Man's attachment to his household and entanglements cloud his mind (sggs 1145).
: Maya ke sanabandh sain saak kit hee kaam na aaiaa: Relatives, relations and family bound through Maya are of no avail (sggs 497).
: Manmukh setee sangu kare muhi kaalakh daagu lagaai: Whoever associates with the self-willed Manmukhs (i.e., Kusang), will have his face blackened (stigma, ਬਦਨਾਮੀ ਦਾ, he will lose his Giaan and Bibek-Budhi...). (sggs 1417).
: Nanak dhaat livai jorhu na aavee je lochai sabh koi: O Nanak, there can be no union between the love of worldliness and the love of the Divine, no matter how much everyone may desire it (sggs 316).
: Jaa hansaa sabhaa veechaar kar dekhani taa bagaa naal jorhu kade na aavai: And when the gathering of swans looks and sees, they realize that they can never form an alliance with the crane (sggs 960).
: O Kabeer! I have been ruined and destroyed by bad company (Kusang), like the banana plant near the thorn bush. The thorn bush waves in the wind, and pierces the banana plant; see this, and do not associate with the Saakat (those separated from the Divine). ||88|| (sggs 1369).
: Bhagataa tai saisaareeaa jorhu kade na aaiaa: There can never be any alliance (ਜੋੜ) between the devotees (ਭਗਤ, Gurmukh...) and the worldly people (ਦੁਨੀਆਦਾਰ). (sggs 145).

We are urged by the Gurbani to disassociate ourselves from the selfishness. Instead, we must form alliance with the Divine Factor within (Mool...). To form alliance with the Divine Mool within means to Realize we are "That" — "Joti-Svaroopa" — beyond duality or non-duality, beyond good or bad, beyond Paap or Punn (vice or virtue), beyond likes or dislikes, beyond lover or Beloved, beyond "this" or "that".

Some form alliances with in-laws and relatives. Some form alliances with chiefs and leaders for their own selfish motives. My alliance is with the Lord, who is All-pervading ||1||. : Hukame hoshaa hukame daanaa doojaa naahee avar dharhaa: By His Hukam (Divine Law), one is unwise, and by His Hukam, one is wise. There is no other alliance except His (sggs 1081).
