Wresling Arena – ਛਿੰਝ (Chhinjh)

What is Chhinjh – ਛਿੰਝ ? It is essentially a wresting competition held in an open arena. This colorful festival is celebrated mainly in the rural areas of Punjab. In the midst of the noise of bugles and drums (Dhol – ਢੋਲ) beat, people and wrestlers from near and far gatter in an arena. The whole atmosphere of this celebration is so original and beautiful, it’s really difficult to put it in words. One got to see it!

To impart us the spiritual wisdom, in one of his Shabads, Guru Arjan Sahib beautifully captures the scene of the Chhinjh (ਛਿੰਝ). To keep this post brief, in nutshell, the message of the Shabad is as follows. Just as wrestlers enter the wrestling arena and try to throw their challengers to the ground while thousands spectators watch them, similarly, we all are like wrestlers that belong to “ਦਯੁ” (the dear Lord), placed in this world-arena (or the arena of the life). He is the Spectator seated to behold our wrestling performance. In our case, we are placed in this arena to challenge the “five” (5, ਪੰਜ) mighty demons – lust, anger, greed, attachment, and pride (of course, their countless variations included). He is watching if – by becoming the Gurmukh (spirituel being, the follower of the Truth and truthful living, etc.) – we have thrown these “five” mighty challengers to the ground. Here is the beautiful Shabad of Guru Arjan Sahib:

: Haou gusaaee daa pahilvaanaarraa …: (sggs 74).
