We Try Purchasing Satguru Instead of Selling Our Mind

How do we try to buy the Satigur or God?

  • Donating gold, silver, money, etc.,
  • Donating expensive Rumaalaas, Palkis, etc.,
  • Conducting elaborate Langars (of food to outdo/impress others),
  • Building expensive Gurdawara buildings,
  • Performing Akhand Paaths without listening or paying attention to what’s being read,
  • Doing Paaths or Nit-Nem in a mechanical, robotic, or machine-gun manner – without understanding,
  • Burning incense, worshipping pictures, idols, etc.,
  • Displaying Bhekh (religious garbs, counting beads-ਮਾਲਾ ਫੇਰਨੀ- etc.),
  • Dhaarmic Karamkaand,
  • Performing pilgrimage and ablutions, etc.,
  • False prostrations or bowing down

This is all false (Jhooth -ਝੂਠ), Brahmani Matt (ਬ੍ਰਹਮਣੀ ਮਤ).

The Gurbani cares less for all this mental circus of ours.

Just listen to any Ardaas being perfomed at any Gurdwara or Deraa. Pay attention to the list of demands in that prayer. This is all Maya (Jhooth -ਝੂਠ), totatlly contrary to the Gurmati. Then isn’t it a fraud on the name of Gurmati? For what? Golak (money)? Consider this verse (many more like this) of the Gurbani:

  • ਵਿਣੁ ਤੁਧੁ ਹੋਰੁ ਜਿ ਮੰਗਣਾ ਸਿਰਿ ਦੁਖਾ ਕੈ ਦੁਖ ॥ ਦੇਹਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੀਆ ਉਤਰੈ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਭੁਖ ॥: O’ God, to ask for anything other than Your Naam (Shabad, Giaan-Wisdom, Virtues etc.) is to invite the worst pains and sorrows for ourselves, therefore please Bless me with Your Naam, which may make me Content and the yearning of my mind for the love of worldly pleasures goes away. (sggs 958).

In other words, none of the tricks of our Mayaic or instinctive mind will work, because they all are in the purview of Maya. And the Maya is Jhooth (false-ਝੂਠ). This is the Gurbani’s edict.

Instead of purchasing the Guru/God, the Gurbani Teaches us to sell our mind (surrender one’s ego-sense, Haumai, self-will or ਮਨ ਮਤ, ਆਪਾ ਭਾਵ-Aapaa bhaav, etc.) to Him.

  • ਕਰਿ ਪੂਜਾ ਹੋਮਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੂਆ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਗੁਰਦੇਵਾ ॥੩॥: Worship the Undying Divine, offer this mind unto Him. ||3|| (sggs 614).
: Manu de raam leeaa hai mol |1|| (sggs 327).
: Tanu manu arpaou pooj chraavaou (sggs 525).

To sell the mind simply indicates to change the mind (ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਬਦਲਨਾ – “ਬੁਧਿ ਬਦਲੀ ਸਿਧਿ ਪਾਈ”: Budhi badalee sidhi paaee,  sggs 339), to mend the mind, to turn it away from Bikaars (greed, etc.), and so on. This essentially is to control, annihilate, or conquor the mind by turning it inwards to its Mool (Source, ਸਚ…).

: (One who) sell his mind (surrenders his ego-sense, Haumai, etc.) to the Satigur (who has the Knowledge of Truth – ਸਚ ਦਾ ਗਿਆਨ), that humble servant’s work (the purpose of life, etc.) becomes fitting or complete (he becomes Gurmukh, Jeevamukat, Enlightened, Realized…). (sggs 286).
: (Raam – Mool) cannot be obtained by giving gold equal to (one’s) weight. (But, say Kabeer, I) have bought (i.e., Realized, Experienced, etc.) Raam by giving my mind (Haumai, ego, etc.) to Him ||1|| (sggs 327).

To the contrary, as indicated by the Gurbani, trying to purchase the Guru/God (e.g., gold-plating Harmandar Sahib by the foolish king Ranjit Singh, etc.) is to turn the mind towards Maya (falsehood).

: (you may) give away gold, horses known as excellent steeds, and land;… but even so, the filth of (your) ego will not depart. (sggs 265).

Listening to any Ardaas being performed at Gurdwaras, Deraas, etc. Clearly, on the name of Gurmati, Bikaars (lust, anger, greed, etc) are openly being promoted.

If they don’t promote such Mayadhaaree lifestyle (ਮਨਮੁਖ ਜਾ ਸਾਕਤ ਜੀਵਨ), then how will they fill their own Golak (money, greed…)? Thus, their only target seems to be the Golak, not the Gurmati. They know if people find out Gurmati As Is, then they will loose their lucrative business! So, its in their advantage to keep people wrapped up in anti-Gurmati rituals (Karamkaand), Bhekh (religious garbs…), dogmas, and so on, which are outrightly rejected (Khandan-ਖੰਡਨ) by the Gurmati.

According to the Gurbani, the way to serve the Satigur is by acceping and doing His Updesh (Teaching, Divine Knowledge, Giaan, Gurmati…: “ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਜੋਗੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥”-Bin Satigurseve jogu hoee, (sggs 946). The implication is that without accepting and doing the Upadesh there can be no Giaan (Divine Knowledge…), and, in turn, without Giaan there can be no Dhiaan and Yoga (linking with the Mool within …).

: The Gur-Sevaa is Shabad-Vichaar (Reflection on the Shabad — Upadesh, Giaan, Wisdom, Naam…). (sggs 223).
