One’s thinking (thoughts: Soch-ਸੋਚ) is formed from ‘Sangat‘ (ਸੰਗਤ: company, association). In turn, one’s actions and habits are the louder expression of one’s thinking (thoughts: Soch). Implication is that Good ‘Sangat‘ will form (1) good thinking (thoughts: Soch), resulting in good actions and habits. (2) To the contrary, bad ‘Sangat‘ (Kusang) will form bad thinking (thoughts: Soch), resulting in bad actions and habits.
: (O Creator) day and night my company is with evil-minded persons, (as a result of evil company) my thinking is also evil. (Since my thinking is evil) my actions are deceitful (cunning, crooked, untruthful etc.); and thus my human birth has become of the worst or a low kind. ||1|| (sggs 345).
The value of ‘sandalwood‘ lies in its fragrance that spreads out far and wide. Its aroma is so sublime that any lowly tree growing near a sandalwood tree also becomes fragrant!
: The fragrant sandal tree is girdled by the snakes; how can anyone get to the sandalwood tree? Similarly, one cannot become like a philosophers touch stone (Paaras) when one’s mind is surrounded by vices/Bikaars — such mind cannot enjoy the Fragrance of the Guru Shabad’s Wisdom, Virtues, Naam etc. We can drink the elixir of Naam only Drawing out the Mighty Sword of the Guru’s Wisdom and cutting out the poisonous (snake of worldly temptations and their corrupting influences). ||3|| (sggs 1324).
: Discriminating intellect (that discerns between good and evil – comes by joining the SatSangat (as an effect of the company). just as, upon coming in contact with a philosopher’s stone, a piece of iron becomes gold! ||3|| (sggs 481).
Thus whatever comes into contact with both the ‘sandalwood’ and the so called ‘Paaras’ is uplifted — a piece of worthless iron is transformed into gold, and an ordinary wood becomes fragrant!
- ਜੋ ਜੈਸੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੋ ਤੈਸੋ ਫਲੁ ਖਾਇ ॥੮੬॥ : According to the company (a man) keeps, gets the similar reward (i.e., acquires similar thinking or Soch, qualities…) ||86|| (sggs 1369).
SatSangat / SaadhSangat
The term Sangat basically means company. However, when it is used in the context of Sikhi, in addition to a company or congregation, it essentially means an institute where one learns. If we recall the definition of Sikhi:
: Sikhi is contemplation on Guru’s teaching (Instructions, Wisdom, Counsel, Guide, Upadesh, Giyan, Bibek) and acting on it. (sggs 465).
SatSangat => Sat + Sangat
Sat = Truth
Sangat = Company, Association
Sat + Sangat => True Company or Congregation …
SadhSangat => Sadh + Sangat
Sadh = the Gurmukhs
Sangat = Company, Association
Sadh + Sangat => Company or Congregation of the Gurmukhs (enlightened beings) …
Hence: SadhSangat = SatSangat = Both are essentially the same.
It should be noted that the term ‘Sadh’ or ‘Sadhoo’ in the Gurbani (SGGS) also appears for the Guru – Shabad Guru.
: O my friend, listen (carefully) to the virtue of being in the Company of the Guru (Sadhoo = Guru = Shabad). (Whosoever internalizes the the Enlightening Message of the Guru’s Shabad) the filth (of Bikaar) is removed from his mind, his countless wrong-doings are dispelled, and his mind becomes purified of evil tendencies. ||1||Pause|| (sggs 809).
The SGGS cautions Sikhs that not every Sangat is SatSangat / SadhSangat:
: What constitutes a ‘SatSangat’ (a congregation of seekers, SatSangee, enlightened beings)? SatSangat is there, where there is deliberation or discourse on ONLY ONE NAAM (Wisdom / Virtues). Nanak, ONE NAAM is the divine Hukam, the Satguru has given me this understanding. ||5|| (sggs 72).
If a Sangat does not meet the above definition, then it’s just a KUSANG — a Kusang is opposite of SatSangat/SadhSangat, the nexus of Bikaar or vices, Mayadhaaree-Saakat-Manmukh company or congregation. Being associated with such immoral Sangat or company, one gets detracted from the Way of the Guru Shabad.
- ਨਾਲਿ ਇਆਣੇ ਦੋਸਤੀ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਰਾਸਿ ॥ ਪਾਣੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਲੀਕ ਜਿਉ ਤਿਸ ਦਾ ਥਾਉ ਨ ਥੇਹੁ ॥੪॥ : Friendship with a fool (ignorant, blockhead etc.) never works out right, and love with a boastful (pompous etc.) are like a line drawn in water, NO trace of that line remains. ||4|| (sggs 474).
To make us Aware of the influence of Kusang on one’s personality, Bhagat Kabeer Sahib has given numerous examples. Consider a few of them as follows: (1) if we come in contact with garlic, we can not avoid its smell; (2) If we touch a vessel stained with soot, some of the soot is bound to stick to us; (3) a black blanket cannot be made white by simply washing it etc. Similarly, it is impossible not being noticed if one is associated with Kusang! Because, the influence of the company one keeps becomes evident through one’s behavior, thinking, actions, interaction with fellow humans in the society.
: Kabeer, a Saakat (vices/Bikaar ridden state of the mind) is like a store of garlic. Even if he/she eats it (garlic) sitting in a corner of a garlic store, it becomes obvious all around due to its foul odor! ||17|| (sggs 1365).
- ਕਬੀਰ ਸਾਕਤ ਸੰਗੁ ਨ ਕੀਜੀਐ ਦੂਰਹਿ ਜਾਈਐ ਭਾਗਿ ॥ ਬਾਸਨੁ ਕਾਰੋ ਪਰਸੀਐ ਤਉ ਕਛੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਦਾਗੁ ॥੧੩੧॥: Kabeer, don’t do Saakat’s company (Saakat: a mind ridden with vices/Bikaar; run far away (from Saakat thought process: negative, ignorant and egoistic…). If you touch a vessel stained with soot, some of the soot is bound to stick to you! ||131|| (sggs 1371).
: Kabeer, staying in SadhSangat, a person’s love for the Creator multiplies every day. But a Saakat (vices/Bikaar ridden state of the mind) is like a black blanket, which does not become white by being washed — similarly, love for the Creator Realization within does not well up in a Saakat mind even in SadhSangat. ||100|| (sggs 1369).
Although SadhSangat is recommended in the Gurbani, but the caveat is that one should not expect automatically becoming a Wise or Virtuous (i.e. Gurmukh or Enlightened) just by physically being in SadhSangat — one has to put efforts to TAKE the Giyan (Wisdom Virtues…) by internalizing the Enlightening Message of the Guru Shabad, and then living it in life. The last Shalok above highlights this point.
In short, the Gurbani teaches us we’re only as good as the company we keep.
- ਜੋ ਜੈਸੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੋ ਤੈਸੋ ਫਲੁ ਖਾਇ ॥੮੬॥ : According to the company it (i.e., mind) keeps, so are the fruits it eats ||86|| (sggs 1369).
By joining and engaging SatSangat / SadhSangat, one becomes relieved of the corrupting influence of Maya and the resurgence of baneful thoughts. Its eradication helps create a state of the mind suitable for practicing Gurmat Bhagti. The highest form of the SatSangat / SadhSangat is the mind’s Realization of the Message of the Guru Shabad (Enlightenment) — BECOMING THE GURBANI.
Having said that, in the SadhSangat / SatSangat, a conditioned being is transformed into unconditioned Consciences! As an uplifting effect of such company, one finds the energy, integrity, understanding, and persistence for lasting Joy, and liberation from false ego-sense (Haumai and its faults – lust, anger, greed, attachment, pride, jealously, stubborn mindedness etc.).
: I am devoted to SadhSangat; I dedicate my mind to (SadhSangat), through whom, Understanding (of the ownself) has enters my mind, and I realize the All-knowing God. (sggs 43).
: Within the SadhSangat all doubts and fears are effaced. (sggs 193).
The Gurbani asserts we human beings are under the influence of the three modes or qualities of material nature of Maya — Taamas, Raajas, and Saatav (‘ਕਈ ਕੋਟਿ ਰਾਜਸ ਤਾਮਸ ਸਾਤਕ ॥’), sggs 276).
As the mind is made of thoughts-stuff, the thoughts that surge forth in the mind are due to the influence of these three Gunas or qualities of the material nature.
For instance, when the mind is under the influence of ‘Taamas’ Guna (ignorance etc.) and experiences stone consciousness, one loses the faculty to cognize the nature of thoughts or rather thoughts themselves. When ‘Raajas’ Guna predominantly prevails in the mind, one’s consciousness turns opaque, resulting in undesirable thoughts carrying their impact straight into the mind. Whereas when the ‘Saatav’ Guna (or goodness) predominates the mind, Awakened conscience prevails, resulting in dispelling of undesirable thoughts.
: Attachment to the three-phased expanse of Maya pervades the world of objects. Associating with SatSangat, the Virtue of Turiya (the State of Supreme Awareness beyond that transcends the three qualities of Maya) is realized; with the grace of this Turiya State one successfully crosses (the Maya-ocean). ||2|| (sggs 1260).
Thus the material nature influences the mind with irretrievable wantonness.
In short, depending on the predominance of ‘Guna’ (Tamo, Rajo, Sato or any combination) one finds his / her own thinking (ਸੋਚ, ਵਿਚਾਰ). In other words, the kind of person you are, the kind of person you will look for and find. For example, a greedy and selfish person will find another greedy and selfish person; an alcoholic will find an another alcoholic; a corrupt and thug will find another corrupt and thug etc.
In order to become a Wise person (Enlightened or Gurmukh Mindset), one needs to watch the predominance of the ‘Gunas’ prevalent in his mind. The subtle thoughts that persistently surge forth and create disturbances and make an indelible effect on the mind are imperceptible.
However a person who consistently is Aware and Alert can perceive the predominance of such thoughts. Therefore it seems imperative that the key to free oneself from effects or hidden fire of Maya lies in attaining the Giyan–Wisdom (ਗਿਆਨ) of the Guru Shabad.
To reclaim the mind from convulsive effects and influences of the worldly temptations and their corrupting influences (Maya), SatSangat / SadhSangat within and without is strongly recommended in the Gurbani.
- ਨੀਕੀ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਾਨੀ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ : Sadh Sangat (the Holy Company) is great (ਚੰਗੀ, ਉੱਤਮ…). ||Pause|| (sggs 404).
: The fortunate (happy, blessed…) human beings meet in the Sangat (Company) of those who have become the Gurmukhs. (sggs 651).
: I would eat what I sow. (sggs 4).
‘Gurmukh‘ is NOT a social status or a title
The Gurbani recommends to keep the Sangat of of those who have become Enlightened – the Gurmukh or Guru Shabad-Oriented mindsets). In other words, of all external or worldly contacts, the company of those who have become Enlightened (Gurmukhs Mindsets) is said to be exalted.
: Make friends with the Gurmukhs, and focus your consciousness on the Satigur (True Wisdom-ਸੱਚਾ ਗਿਆਨ). (sggs 1421).
: (Passion for) the Spiritual life-giving Ambrosial Bani is born (in the mind of diligent seekers) through internalizing the Spiritual Message of the Shabad. A Gurmukh (Enlightened/Guru-oriented being) utters and presents it to others. ||3|| (sggs 125).
However, the exalted state of Gurmukhs-Hood is not a social status or a title, it is a question of becoming Enlightened through Internalization of the spiritual Message embedded in the Guru Shabad.
It is so because meeting of people merely at physical plane, emotional plane, material-intelligence plane etc. does not constitute Gurmukh-Hood or SadhSangat.
: If the individual soul (mind) has faith in the Universal Soul (Universal Energy, Universal Hukam…), then it will obtain realization in its ownself, within. (sggs 87).
Therefore, the Gurbani alerts all of us to the fact that such Enlightened beings are very ‘RARE‘ in this world:
: A rare one, as Gurmukh, earns (lives…) the Truth (sggs 1344).
: Gurmukh (Enlightened or Guru Shabad-Oriented) is very rare who, while living the ordinary life of a householder, has become living liberated (i.e. free from worldly bonds and vices/Bikaar…). (sggs 232).
: Our (real) friends are those seeing whom (i.e., keeping whose friendship) wicked intellect is dispelled. (However) I have been searching the whole world, and found that such ‘JAN’ (Gurmukh, Bhagat, Daas) are very RARE. ॥1॥ (sggs 520).
Generally, in worldly sense a Gurmukh is often thought of as one who may have renounced the family to establish a Deraa, or someone who wears peculiar religious garbs and maintains a peculiar outer looks etc. Such definition can only come from self-serving, crooked or foolish minds.
A True and a Wise (Enlightened, GurmuKh) person may externally appear to be irreligious, not well cultured, or not even learned etc. However, he / she is one hundred percent established in the Elevated Spiritual State!
However, the Gurmukh-hood is the Enlightened state of the mind, ‘Biratee- ਬਿਰਤੀ’ or ‘Subha-ਸੁਭਾ’, Nature, thinking etc. Such ‘Biratee– ਬਿਰਤੀ’ or ‘Subha-ਸੁਭਾ’ or thinking can be of any person who is good and beneficial to the humanity — a doctor, an engineer, a farmer, a home-maker, a businessmen, a laborer, a teacher, a cobbler, a weaver, a barber, a tailor, an educated or uneducated person, a person of so called high or low Jaat Paat, a rich or poor, a wife, a husband, a child, a brother, a sister, a white person, a black person, and so on.
In short, those who become Gurmukhs ever remain connected with the teachings of the Guru Shabad, the Creator and His Hukam WITHIN:
- ਸਚਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਸੇ ਨ ਵਿਛੁੜਹਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੪॥੨੬॥੫੯॥ : Nanak, those who have realized the Creator within by becoming the Gurmukhs never get separated from the Creator. ||4||26||59|| (sggs 37).
: The Gurmukh is blessed with spiritual wisdom and discerning intellect (sggs 317).
Aptly, the Gurbani affirms that one does not become a Gurmukh or Wise just by wearing religious robes, posing in meditation posture (Aasan) like a crane or heron waiting for fish in a pond. Or like a person who rises early in the morning for worship and then goes about cheating people all day along — externally looking neat and clean or Mahaatamaa but inside full of filth of corruption, fraud etc.
: They wear rosaries around their necks, and glittering jugs in their hands. Just because of such religious paraphernalia they should not be called Sant of God — they are thugs of Baanaaras (i.e., religious conmen, cheats, robbers…). Fallen from human thinking, such pretentious so called Sant are not pleasing to me. Because, they rob their victims of not only their wealth, but also of their life which is like gulping down the entire tree instead of consuming just a branch. ||1||Pause|| (sggs 476).
: (Rabb is never) impressed (pleased) with anyone’s outward appearance. (sggs 269).
Those who have become the Gurmukhs can Guide other deluded or conditioned beings.
: Realize the Naam (Wisdom / Virtues) yourself and inspire others to Realize it. By learning, teaching and living it (practice-ਅਮਲ), one becomes Enlightened. (sggs 289).
However, a mentally blind person or a leader cannot guide or show the Way to others!
: Someone pretends to be respected by becoming a Guru or a Pir (spiritual guide…) but is also greedy for material things (i.e. accumulates wealth by craftiness and making excuses). Don’t ever touch such person’s feet (i.e., don’t consider him a Guru or a Pir – don’t follow him). (sggs 1245).
Abandon The False And Join The True – ‘Sat‘ Within
The SatSangat/SadhSangat helps the learner (i.e. Sikh) develop love for the ONE Creator and His Hukam (Universal Universal System-Rule-Law-of Nature). Then gradually the mind attains Inner Purity and Sahaj (Natural State of Being, Enlightenment…) needed to make the mind sink into its True Nature within which results detachment from the worldly temptations and their corrupting influences (Bhav Saagar). Thus, with the help of the divine Virtues attained from the external SadhgSangat, one begins an Upward journey — expansion-development-progress-blooming of intellect or Budh…
: Through the Gur-Shabad, who remains dead (to Bikaar: lust, anger, greed, etc.) while yet alive, Naam (Wisdom, Virtues, Truth…) comes to dwell within his mind. ||1|| (sggs 33).
By interiorizing the Enlightening Message of the Guru Shabad, we can search ownself and realize the Reality.
Having said that, with the aid of Virtues / Wisdom realized from the external SatSangat/SadhSangat, and dying in the Guru Shabad, the lifelong learner (i.e. Sikh) becomes fit to retrace his steps back to the True Source-Mool within.
Here the lifelong learner (i.e. a Sikh) sinks deep in the cave of the Heart, and do ‘Ajappa Jaap‘. With the help of the Inner SatSang, the taste of Intuitive Understanding or Realization of the Guru Shabad is experienced. The learner (i.e. Sikh) feels uplifted and inspired to become more and more engaged in the Shabad-Kamaaee or practice in daily life.
The Gurbani reveals that the the Creator is within us. Since the Sat is within us, the internal SatSang is the most sublime and intimate, because we can never remain apart from it. It is only this ONE Universal Energy which is immanent in all beings and everywhere in the Universe.
Upon attaining Shabad-Surt, the previous Manmukh-Saakat-Mayadhaaree mindset ‘dies‘, and gets ‘reborn’ as a new, Enlightened mindset (Gurmukh). Consider Bhagat Kabeer’s priceless words:
: My mind’s previous thinking (Soch – ਬਿਰਤੀ…) was like an ugly and lowly bride of bad character; it was neither good for my temporal life nor for the Guru-oriented life. My present thinking (Awakened Intellect) is like a beautiful bride who is wise and Virtuous; I have taken her into my heart with Sahaj (Natural State of Being – state of Wisdom…). ||1|| It has turned out so well that I got rid of my previous bad thinking which I used to like. May my present Awakened Intellect last forever. ||1||Pause|| Kabeer says, since I have realized the Awakened Intellect, my previous evil thinking has become irrelevant. The newly acquired Awakened Intellect is always with me now, and the previous evil or egoistic thinking has gone somewhere else. ||2||2||32|| (sggs 483).
