The lifestyle of a Manmukh nature is the opposite of the Gurmukh nature (see the previous blog).

: The Manmukhs (self-willed, materialistics, deniers of Truth and truthful life, etc.) lose (the true way of life, and as aresult) remain under the shadow of death (ਜਮ ਦੀ ਮੁਥਾਜੀ, fear of death, etc.). They look into the homes of others, and (due to such ill Karma) lose (their spiritual life, etc.). The Manmukhs are confused by doubt, (it is like) wandering in the wilderness. Having lost their way (of the true life, etc.), they are plundered; (just as) the person who chant mantras at cremation grounds (he is walking on a wrong path – ਭੈੜੇ ਪਾਸੇ – etc.). The Manumukhs do not think of the Shabad (they don’t realize, understand, or practice the Shabad – ਭਾਵ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਨੂੰ ਕਦਰ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ); instead, they utter obscenities (ਦੁਰਬਚਨ – ill talk, ill speech, etc.). O Nanak! Those who are attuned to the Truth know Sukha. ||26|| (sggs 941).

Hence, a Manmukh is a materialistic (self-willed, unenlightened, deniers of the Truth and the truthful living, etc.), who does not have natural inclination for understanding, Realizing, and living the Shabad. People with such materialistic outlook — referred to as Manmukhs in the Gurbani — assert that real happiness is attainable only in acquisition of sense-objects, pursuing passions, etc. In other words, a Manmukh is ruled by his conditioned and corrupt sense-blind mind instead of Soul Consciousness. Simply stated, a Manmukh is an ego-being with the following faults: lust, anger, greed, material attachment, pride, envy, stubborn mindedness; along with numerous variations of these. As repeatedly pointed out in the Gurbani, having conditioned (polluted or filthy) consciousness, he has no understanding of the Naam, Shabad, Hukam, Joti-Svaroopa (his True Nature), God, Spirit or the Satguru. Consequently, he has no understanding of the ultimate purpose of life, his relationship with Truth, and the Way of Truth (Gurmat). In this madness, illusion and “I-am-ness”, he cultivates the life of a faithless cynic called “Saakat” — an unwise and untrue being who is separated from his Real Source or True Being.

: They alone are Manmukhs who do not realize the Shabad (sggs 1054).
  • The Manmukh’s (mind) remains filthy (with Bikaar); (he) does not understand the Shabad (sggs 415).
: They prefer the gift, instead of the Giver; such is the way of the Manmukhs. What can anyone say about their intelligence, their understanding or their cleverness? (sggs 138).
: Te saakat chor jinaa Naamu visaariaa man tin kai nikati n bhiteeai ||4||: Saakat who have forgotten the Naam are thieves. O (my) mind! Do not draw near them ||4|| (sggs 170).
: The Manmukh is sick and diseased (with evil passions) in the world (sggs 118).

In nutshell, as indicated in the Gurbani, anyone who has not realized the Shabad alone is a Manmukh. Opposite to a Manmukh is a Gurmukh who has realized the Shabad. : Naam na cheetahi sabad na vichaarahi ih manmukh kaa aachaar: The conduct of the Manmukh is that he does not think of the Divine Naam, and he does not contemplate the Shabad (sggs 508).

: Those within whose mind is the disease of ego (Haumai – ਹਉਮੈ), those self-willed (Manmukhs), the evil beings (ਬਿਕਾਰੀ ਬੰਦੇ – corrupt people), are deluded by doubt (sggs 301).
: The blind Manmukh are attached to the love of duality (sggs 113).
: The (mentally) blind Manmukh wander around like demons. (sggs 117).
: The blind Manmukh have no understanding at all (sggs 118).
: The egotistical Manmukhs do not appreciate the value of devotional worship (sggs 429).
: The Manmukh practices falsehood, only falsehood (sggs 363).
: Manmukhu agiaanee andhu andhaaraa (sggs 1067).
: Manmukh tatu na jaananee pasoo maahi samaanaa (sggs 1009).

Here the Gurbani provides us with a very clear definition as to what constitutes a Manmukh. Those who have realized the Shabad, Naam or God Consciousness are the real Gurmukhs (see the previous blog), whilst the rest of us (over 99.9 percent) are just hypocrite, faithless cynics or Manmukhs engrossed in unenlightened existence of worldly attachments, evil passions, hatred, selfishness, falsehood, meaningless and empty rituals, corruption, frauds, deception, greed, lip worship, varieties of superficial religious activities, religious robes, reactionary spirituality, etc.
