Numerously the Gurbani mentions “Suhelaa (ਸੁਹੇਲਾ)” and “Duhelaa (ਦੁਹੇਲਾ)”.
But, according to the Gurbani, who is “Suhelaa (ਸੁਹੇਲਾ)”, and who is “Duhelaa (ਦੁਹੇਲਾ)” in this world?
The Gurbani indicates that “Suhelaa (ਸੁਹੇਲਾ)” in this world is that person who has become the Gurmukh.
- ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੇ ਸੁਹੇਲੇ ਭਏ ਮੁਖ ਊਜਲ ਦਰਬਾਰੇ ॥੨॥: O Nanak, the Gurmukhs are Suhele; their faces are radiant in the Court of the Lord. ||2|| (sggs 1249).
- ਕਾਇਆ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਹੇਲੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਲਾ ॥੨॥: Kaaiaa kaamani sadaa suhelee... ||2|| (sggs 754).
- ਸੰਤ ਸਾਜਨ ਸਿਖ ਭਏ ਸੁਹੇਲੇ ॥: Sant saajan sikh bhae suhele (sggs 1340).
Now, who is the Gurmukh? In nutshell, a Gurmukh is the follower of the Truth (“ਸਚ”) or Gurmat (“ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ”, the Gurbani’s Giaan or Wisdom…); he remains detached in the midst of Maya (ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ ਉਦਾਸੀ); he is free of the false ego-sense (Haumai, ਆਪਾ ਭਾਵ, “ਮੈ ਮੈ”); he is free of doubts (ਭਰਮ) and duality (Doojaa-Bhaav, two-ness, ਦੁਚਿੱਤੀ…); he abides in the Divine Hukam (ਹੁਕਮੀ ਬੰਦਾ-ਅਮਲੀ ਜੀਵਨ, ਹੁਕਮੀ ਜੀਵਨ…); he is ever linked to his Mool within (ਮੂਲ: Source, Origin, Truth, Jot…) and ever remains so; he is contented in all situations (Sach Santokhee); his mind is linked to Antar-Aatmaa; he restrains his mind instead of following his mind; he remains integrated in the state of “ਇਕ ਮਨਿ ਇਕ ਚਿਤਿ ” – Ik Mani Ik Chiti; he is established in Bibek Budhi – ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰਮਤ ਦੀ ਪੂਰੀ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੈ; his Akal (ਅਕਲ , wisdom, intellect, reason, etc.) he follows the Gurbani (Aatam Giaan, Spiritual Wisdom of the Gur-Shabad)…
- ਸੋ ਰਿਦਾ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਤੂੰ ਵੁਠਾ ਸਭਨਾ ਕੇ ਦਾਤਾਰਾ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥: So ridaa suhelaa jitu ridai toon vuthaa… (sggs 97).
- ਸਿਮਰਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਦੇਵੈ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲਾ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥: Simarat Naamu sadaa suhelaa… (sggs 98).
- ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਜਿਨੀ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਸੋ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥: Gur prasaadee jinee antari paaiaa so baahari suhelaa jeeou ||1|| (sggs 102).
- ਜਾ ਕੈ ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਸੋਈ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ ॥: Jaa kai hari dhanu soee suhelaa (sggs 179).
- ਓਹੁ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ ਸਦ ਸੁਖੀ ਸਭੁ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਭਉ ਭਾਗਾ ॥੧॥: Ohu suhelaa sada sukhee sabhu bhram bhaou bhaagaa ||1|| (sggs 399).
Also, the Gurbani indicates that “Duhelaa (ਦੁਹੇਲਾ)” in this world is that person who lives as the Manmukh or the Saakat (i.e., opposite of the Gurmukh Lifestyle).
- ਲਿਖਿਆ ਆਇਆ ਪਕੜਿ ਚਲਾਇਆ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਹੇਲੇ ॥: Likhiaa aaiaa pakarhi chalaiaa manmukh sadaa duhelaa (sggs 78).
- ਹਲਤੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਾਕਤ ਦੁਹੇਲੇ ਭਏ ਹਥਹੁ ਛੁੜਕਿ ਗਇਆ ਅਗੈ ਪਲਤਿ ਸਾਕਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਢੋਈ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥੫॥: Halatai vichi saakat duhele bhae hathahu chhurhaki gaiaa agai palati saakatu hari dargah dhoee n paaee (sggs 734).
In nutshell, the Manmukh is the denier or resistang of the Gurmat (“ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ” ਦਾ ਵਿਰੋਧੀ , the opposer of the Gurbani’s Teaching…) or Truth (“ਸਚ”); he is full of Bikaar (ਬਿਕਾਰੀ ਬੰਦਾ, Mayadhaaree…); he is disconnected from his Mool (Source, Origin Truth…); his mind free to escape through his defiled senses runs after sense-objects; his Akal (intellect) follows his mind’s dictates; he remains uncontented; he remains in love with Maya -ਮਾਇਆ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ; he is doubt-ridden and duality-ridden; he is “Mugadhu Gubaaru” (ਮੁਗਧੁ ਗੁਬਾਰੁ-foolish); he is the self-willed (ਮੱਨਮਤੀਆ)…
- ਸੋਈ ਦੁਹੇਲਾ ਜਗਿ ਜਿਨਿ ਨਾਉ ਵਿਸਾਰੀਆ ॥੧੪॥: Soee duhelaa jagi jini naaou visaareeaa ||14|| (sggs 964).
- ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਦੁਹੇਲਾ ॥੪॥: Doojai bhaai agiaanu duhelaa ||4|| (sggs 226).
- ਜਮ ਵਸਿ ਕੀਆ ਅੰਧੁ ਦੁਹੇਲਾ ॥: Jam vasi keeaa andhu duhelaa (sggs 1031).
As we can see, “Suhela (ਸੁਹੇਲਾ)” is the opposite of “Duhelaa (ਦੁਹੇਲਾ)“, and vice versa:

Duhelaa (ਦੁਹੇਲਾ) => Manmukh, Saakat, Grieved, distressed, Miserable, suffering, in pain or difficulties, Dukhee (ਦੁਖੀ), ਦੁਖਦਾਈ, ਦੁਖ ਵਾਲਾ, ਔਖਾ …
The Gurbani wants us to become “Suhelaa (ਸੁਹੇਲਾ)” – the Gurmukh.
- ਹਲਤਿ ਪਲਤਿ ਜਨ ਭਏ ਸੁਹੇਲੇ ਮੁਖ ਊਜਲ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਰਫਾ ॥੨॥: Halati palati jan bhae suhele mukh oojal gurmukhi taraphaa (sggs 1336).
However, it will require offering of the mind (Haumai, egotism, Mayaic intellect…). But, the mind will not agree to such sacrifice (ਕੁਰਬਾਨੀ)!
- ਮਨੁ ਦੇ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ ॥: Manu de paavahi naamu suhelaa (sggs 226).
