Signs of Mool Realization

The Unique and Revolutionary Spirituality of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib (SGGS) is not only practical, but also logical and commonsense. There is no pretense (Dikhaavaa-ਦਿਖਾਵਾ). Realized through Internalizing the Spiritual Message of the Shabad, it is the compass that Guides learners and seekers (Sikhs) in successfully traversing their individual Spiritual Journey in life.

That being said, the spirituality of the Gurbani (SGGS) is of the SELF, for the SELF, by the SELF. In other words, there is NO concept of transfer of blessings in the spirituality of the Gurbani.

Hence, in a nutshell, the Gurbani in the SGGS is ‘FOR ME’ and ‘ABOUT ME’ — to learn to mend my own crooked mind, change it, improve it, realize the purpose of human life and live it successfully, and so on.

The Gurbani in SGGS teaches us that the purpose of human life is to realize one’s Mool (Source, Jot...) by seeking liberation from doubt (Bharam), Maya’s delusion, duality, Haumai (false ego-sense), spiritual ignorance etc.

: (Man) is born in this life only to become ONE (with Prabh, Mool, etc. – through Naam…). (But) ever since (man’s) birth, (he) has been enticed and deceived by Maya. (sggs 251).
: O mortal, you came to earn a (Spiritual) Profit. (sggs 43).
: (O Human being!) You have been blessed with a human body. This is your only opportunity to unite with the Creator. Other worldly deeds (e.g. Karamkaand, rituals, formalities, concocted concepts etc.) are of no use to you in realizing God. Therefore join the holy congregation (i.e. Satsangee Jan, seekers) and lovingly remember the divine Naam (Virtues / Wisdom). ||1|| (sggs 12).
  • ਇਉ ਕਹੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮਨ ਤੂੰ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਰੂਪੁ ਹੈ ਅਪਣਾ ਮੂਲੁ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥੫॥ : This is what Nanak says: O mind, you are the ‘Jot Saroop’ – embodiment of Energy! Recognize your Mool (i.e. Root, Origin…) ||5|| (sggs 441).

But the challenges in this Spiritual quest are many and difficult to surmount. It’s an uphill climb! Because – as the Gurbani teaches us – our mind gets deluded or fascinated by Maya from the very birth.

Thus, the formidable challenge is to free the deluded mind from Maya’s delusion, bewilderment, perplexity, hallucination, spiritual ignorance etc. If we don’t, then, the Gurbani very bluntly warns us:

  • ਆਵਨ ਆਏ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਮਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਪਸੁ ਢੋਰ ॥ : (Those who have) come into the world just for the sake of coming (i.e., they have not used this human birth for the purpose it was given to them); without Understanding (of their Mool, Aatm-Giaan, Essence, etc.), they are like animals and beasts. (sggs 251).
: Without understanding, (a person) remains like beast, and remains engrossed in Maya,  doubt and attachment (i.e, Maya’s deception, bewilderment…). (sggs 1300).
  • ਚਿਟੇ ਜਿਨ ਕੇ ਕਪੜੇ ਮੈਲੇ ਚਿਤ ਕਠੋਰ ਜੀਉ ॥ ਤਿਨ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਊਪਜੈ ਦੂਜੈ ਵਿਆਪੇ ਚੋਰ ਜੀਉ ॥ ਮੂਲੁ ਨ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਆਪਣਾ ਸੇ ਪਸੂਆ ਸੇ ਢੋਰ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥ : Their clothes are white (beautiful religious robes) but their conscience is cruel and filthy (full of vices — they look holy or Mahaatamaa on the outside only). Their minds don’t acquire  Naam (Giaan-Wisdom, Virtues…); engrossed in duality they cheat people (i.e. their external appearance is only pretense-Pakhand to cheat people). They do not Understand their own Mool (Source, Jot Saroop…); that’s why they are fools with animal intelligence ||3|| (sggs 751).

The Gurbani provides us with signs of Spiritual Progress towards one’s Mool-realization. Like a barometer, this can help us in evaluating our own state of Mool-realization!

According to the Gurbani, what are these signs? Quoted here are a few verses from the Gurbani:

: This is the sign of Mool-Realization: one’s mind abides in the Divine Hukam (Universal Sysytem-Rule-Law of Nature; ਕੁਦਰਤੀ ਨਿਯਮ). Those who live in harmony with the Divine Hukam remain established in Sahaj (Natural State of Being, Giaan- Wisdom Avasthaa…), Godly contentment, enduring satisfaction (from worldly desires) and Bliss. ||3|| (sggs 106).
  • ਧਨੁ ਸੋਹਾਗਨਿ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪਛਾਨੈ ॥ ਮਾਨੈ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਤਜੈ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੈ ॥ ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਸਿਉ ਰਾਤੀ ਰਲੀਆ ਮਾਨੈ ॥੧॥ ਸੁਨਿ ਸਖੀਏ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮਿਲਣ ਨੀਸਾਨੀ ॥ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਅਰਪਿ ਤਜਿ ਲਾਜ ਲੋਕਾਨੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ ਸਖੀ ਸਹੇਲੀ ਕਉ ਸਮਝਾਵੈ ॥ ਸੋਈ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਵੈ ॥ ਸਾ ਸੋਹਾਗਣਿ ਅੰਕਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੨॥ : Blessed is that soul-bride (ਜੀਵ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ), who realizes her Mool. She lives in harmony with the Divine Hukam (Universal Sysytem-Rule-Law of Nature; ਕੁਦਰਤੀ ਨਿਯਮ), and abandons her self-conceit. Imbued in the love of her Mool, she enjoys (Spiritual Bliss, ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ). O mate! Listen the signs of Mool-realization. ||1|| (The way is) dedicate your mind and body to the Divine Hukam and lay aside any thoughts of worldly embarrassment (ਲੋਕ-ਲਾਜ). ||1||Pause|| Such a Mool-Abided soul-bride counsels others that a Mool-Abided soul-bride does only that deed which is pleasing to Husband-God (Mool). Such a soul-bride Realizes God. ||2|| (sggs 737).
  • ਸੁਖੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਦੋਨੋ ਸਮ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਨੈ ਅਉਰੁ ਮਾਨੁ ਅਪਮਾਨਾ ॥ ਹਰਖ ਸੋਗ ਤੇ ਰਹੈ ਅਤੀਤਾ ਤਿਨਿ ਜਗਿ ਤਤੁ ਪਛਾਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਉਸਤਤਿ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਦੋਊ ਤਿਆਗੈ ਖੋਜੈ ਪਦੁ ਨਿਰਬਾਨਾ ॥ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹੁ ਖੇਲੁ ਕਠਨੁ ਹੈ ਕਿਨਹੂੰ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਨਾ ॥੨॥੧॥ : One who deems Sukha and Dukha alike, and honor and dishonor as well, who remains detached from joy and sorrow, realizes the true essence (of living) in the world ||1||. Renounce both praise and blame; seek instead the state of Nirvaanaa (Aatmic Avasthaa devoid of Vaasnaa). O Nanak (however)! This is a difficult game; only a rare who has become the Gurmukh understands it! ||2||1|| (sggs 219).(sggs 219).

In addition, also consider the following verses:

: To live by remembering the Mantra of the Omnipresent Creator‘s Naam (Giyan-Wisdom / Virtues); to deem pain and pleasure alike and live a immaculate life free of enmity; to be kind to all beings and and free of the ‘five’ (vices/Bikaar); to live a daily life of Divine Virtues the Spiritual food and to remain detached from love of Maya, like the lotus flower in water; to adopt the teaching of treating friends and enemies alike and develop love for Bhagti; not to hear anyone’s slander and become humble renouncing self-conceit; Nanak, those who possess six qualities (as described above) are the complete human beings and can be called pious persons (Gurmukhs). ||40|| (sggs 1357).
: The Gurumukh (Enlightened ones who have Internalized the spiritual Message of the Shabad) never age for their Consciousness is ever immersed in divine Giyan-Wisdom. They forever live life of divine Virtues, focusing only on that alone. They always remain in the Bliss and Bibek (discriminating intellect) and they are always steadfast in sorrow and happiness. They see only ONE Omnipresent everywhere (Universal Energy). ||44|| (sggs 1418).
: (Divine Grace or Blessing is to) eliminate (Mar) my countless (Ketiya) desire-related (Bhukh) sorrows (Dukh). This (Eh) calling to me too (Bhe) is your Gift in Blessing (Daat) to me O Creator (Daataar). (sggs 5).
  • ਅਪੁਸਟ ਬਾਤ ਤੇ ਭਈ ਸੀਧਰੀ ਦੂਤ ਦੁਸਟ ਸਜਨਈ ॥ ਅੰਧਕਾਰ ਮਹਿ ਰਤਨੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸਿਓ ਮਲੀਨ ਬੁਧਿ ਹਛਨਈ ॥੧॥ ਜਉ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਭਈ ॥ ਸੁਖ ਸੰਪਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਫਲ ਪਾਏ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ : Upon Realization of ‘Gobind‘ (Mool…) Within, my corrupt intellect (ਪੱਠੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ) became right (Awakened-ਸਿਧੀ ਹੋ ਗਈ), whom I considered enemies (Divine Virtues-ਗੁਣ) became my friends, Jewel like Giyan-Wisdom illuminated the darkness of my ignorant mind and my corrupt intellect became pure (good, Virtuous, moral etc.), Internalizing the Enlightening Giayn-Wisdom of the Guru Shabad (ਸੱਚਾ ਗਿਆਨ) I Realized Peace and the Wealth of the Divine Naam (Giyan-Wisdom / Virtues). ||1||Pause||  (sggs 402).

The forgoing verses (and many more in SGGS) draw a learner’s (a Sikh) attention to inculcate essential Divine Qualities as signs of one’s Mool-realization Within (Source, Origin, Jot…):

  • Living in harmony with the Divine Hukam (Universal Sysytem-Rule-Law of Nature;
  • Remembering/living/practicing the Divine Naam (Giyan-Wisdom / Virtues).
  • Internalizing the Enlightening Spiritual Message of the Guru Shabad.
  • Deeming Sukh and Dukh alike (i.e. to become free of duality, the pair of opposites such as ‘likes and dislikes’…).
  • Becoming kind to all beings; overpowering vices/Bikaarlust, anger, greed, attachment, pride; and their countless variations.
  • Remaining untouched by the worldly temptations and their corrupting influences (Maya). Example given is of ‘lotus‘.
  • Counseling friend and enemy alike (i.e., adopting Teaching in which the friend and the enemy look alike).
  • Renouncing ‘Lok Laaj‘ — lay aside the idea of feeling shame from the people, stop living to please others.
  • Renouncing slandering, eradicating false ego-sense (Haumai) and becoming humble.
  • Becoming the Gurmukh (Enlightened, Guru Shabad-Oriented). Once the mind becomes focused on Message of the Guru Shabad, the body also follows …..

The Gurbani tells us that even if such a ‘rare‘ person (i.e., the Gurmukh, Daas, Bhagat, Jan...) lives amidst the worldly activities (Maya), he will remain detached from it and thus untainted by it, just as the lotus flower remains untainted in the slimy scum.

: The way to successful spirituality is to be detached from the world WHILE LIVING IN IT; just like the detachment of the Lotus from the stagnant water and the swan from the river water. O Nanak! The Journey of spirituality (i.e. to go across Bhav Saagar) is thus transversed in detachment by keeping the Message of the Shabad within our Consciousness in order to Realize / live the Virtues of God. Being detached (from worldliness) is thus to remain above desire (while living in the world) and keeping one’s mind in sole single focus of the Creator. Nanak subscribes to such detachment in the Realization of the Creator who is beyond the reach of human senses. ॥5॥ (sggs 938).
: Internalization of the spiritual Message of the Shabad (the Gurmukh-Hood State of Mind) enables its Essence to be Rooted (Mool) within the mind permanently. (sggs 945).
: Nanna: That person alone wins the battle of life who wins over himself. One who destroys his Haumai (false ego-sense) and duality becomes a renowned warrior. Following the perfect Guru’s Giaan-Wisdom, the person who eradicates his false ego-sense and remains unattached to the worldly attractions and their corrupting influences while still alive (i.e. living dead), conquers his mind like a warrior and realizes God within…. (sggs 256).

  4. Excellent question Bhaji! Welcome to the Gurbani Blog!

    Is it to merge back into the Divine or is it to seek union with God ?

    First off, UNlike the Abrahaminical religions (i.e., Christianity, Islam, Judaism…), the Gurbani’s God is not seprate from Jeeva (individual beings).
    In fact, according to the Gurbani, we are THAT, here and now!
    • ਇਉ ਕਹੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮਨ ਤੂੰ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਰੂਪੁ ਹੈ ਅਪਣਾ ਮੂਲੁ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥੫॥: Thus says Nanak: O my mind, you are the embodiment or the True Image of the Divine Light (i.e., God) – recognize your Origin-Mool ||5|| (sggs 441).
    • ਤੂ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਗੁਪਤੁ ਵਸਹਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਤੇਰਾ ਭਾਉ ਨ ਬੁਝਹਿ ਗਵਾਰੀ ॥: (O Lord!) You dwell, hidden, within the heart day and night; but the fools do not understand how to Love You. (sggs 607).

    Therefore, according to the Gurbani, there is no need to “seek” God outside. For ALL is within.
    • ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਘਰ ਮਹਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਨਾਹੀ ॥ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਟੋਲੈ ਸੋ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਹੀ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਜਿਨੀ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਸੋ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥: Sabh kishu ghar mahi baahari naahee. Baahari tolai so bharami bhulaahee. Gur Parasaadee jinee antari paaiaa so antari baahari suhelaa jeeou ||1||: Everything is within the Home (of the self, Heart, Antahakaran, ਅੰਤਹ ਕਰਨ ਰੂਪੀ ਘਰ ਅੰਦਰ, ਹਿਰਦੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ…); there is nothing outside of It. Who searches outside is deluded by doubts. By “Gur Parasaadee” (i.e., by the Gur-Grace: Grace of the Gur-Giaan…), who has Realized (Truth…) within is Happy inwardly and outwardly (i.e., totally Happy, Easy, Comfortable, Peaceful, Blissful, Joyful, ਸੌਖਾ, ਸੁਖੀ, ਆਤਮਕ ਸੁਖ…) ||1|| (sggs 102).

    In other words, whatever is “up there”, so is within!
    • ਜੋ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡੇ ਸੋਈ ਪਿੰਡੇ ਜੋ ਖੋਜੈ ਸੋ ਪਾਵੈ ॥: Jo Brahmande soee pinde jo khojai so paavay: Who (pervades) the Brahmand also (dwells) in the body; whoever seeks (within), obtains (Him within). (sggs 695).

    This is the reason the Gurbani time and again asks us to eradicate our doubts (Bharam, delusion, illusion…) through proper understanding via Shabad-Vichaar (via Reflections On The Gurbani), and become ONE (unite, link, meet, absorb, immerse, blend, “ਮਿਲਣ”, “ਲੀਨੁ ਭਇਆ”, “ਏਕ ਭਏ”, “ਸਮਾਇਆ”…) with our Mool (Source, Jot…), within, while alive – not after death…

    • ਰਾਮ ਕਬੀਰਾ ਏਕ ਭਏ ਹੈ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਪਛਾਨੀ ॥੬॥੩॥: My Raam (Mool) and (I) Kabeer have become one, no one can tell (us) apart. ||6||3|| (sggs 969).
    • ਬਸਤੁ ਮਾਹਿ ਲੇ ਬਸਤੁ ਗਡਾਈ ॥ ਤਾ ਕਉ ਭਿੰਨ ਨ ਕਹਨਾ ਜਾਈ ॥ ਬੂਝੈ ਬੂਝਨਹਾਰੁ ਬਿਬੇਕ ॥ When something blends with its own (ਉਸ ਕਿਸਮ ਦੀ ਚੀਜ ਵਿਚ ਰਲਣਾਂ), it cannot be said to be separate from it (ਦੋਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਫਰਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦਾ, similarly, one whose heart is filled with Parmeshar cannot be said separate from Him – he and Parmeshar are one and same). Only one with discriminating intellect understands it (sggs 285).
    • ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਜੇਹਾ ॥ ਭੇਦੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਹੁ ਮਾਣਸ ਦੇਹਾ ॥: Hari kaa saevaku so hari jehaa. Bhedu n jaanahu maanas dehaa (sggs 1076).
    • ਨਾਨਕ ਲੀਨ ਭਇਓ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿਉ ਜਿਉ ਪਾਨੀ ਸੰਗਿ ਪਾਨੀ ॥੩॥੧੧॥: Nanak leen bhaio gobind siou jiou paanee sangi paane ||3||11|| (sggs 633).
    • ਜੀਉ ਪੀਉ ਬੂਝਉ ਨਹੀ ਘਟ ਮਹਿ ਜੀਉ ਕਿ ਪੀਉ ॥੨੩੬॥: Jeeou peeou boojhou nahee ghat mahi jeeou ki peeou ||236|| (sggs 1377).
    • ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੪॥: Jan Nanak haumai maari samaaiaa ||4|| (sggs 1376).
    • ਆਪੁ ਗਇਆ ਤਾ ਆਪਹਿ ਭਏ ॥: Aapu gaiaa taa aapahi bhaye (sggs 202).

  5. Praji,

    Have a question regarding the goal of human life ( in Sikh Context). Is it to merge back into the Divine or is it to seek union with God ? Believe there’s a subtle difference. In the former, there is no difference between the soul and Paramatma. Whereas for the latter, there is a distinct difference between God and man.

  6. According to Gurbaanee THE MOOLu is GUR JOTi and one should remain connected with this thru its RAAM /HARi NAAMu only.
