False Ego-Sense Kills our Original Nature

The Sri Guru Granth Sahib (SGGS) teaches us that the man’s Original Nature is Jot Saroop — incomparable Beauty, Original, Whole (Saabat Soorat), Light, Unconditioned and Untainted Consciousness etc.

The Gurbani challenges our mind to recognize its Original Nature as Jot Saroop, Here and Now!

: This is what Nanak says: O my mind, you are the ‘Jot Saroop’ or embodiment of Light (God)! Recognize your Mool (ORIGIN, Source…) ||5|| (sggs 441).

Virus of the mind

Ego (Haumai) is within all of us!

: (Hukam: System-Rule-Law of Nature…) put the tendency to act in Haumai Maya within beings. Those who act as Manmukhs (Un-enlightened mindsets) go astray from Hukam and lose honor (i.e. lose spiritual life). One who becomes the Gurmukh (i.e. Enlightened state of the mind developed by Internalizing the Enlightening Message embedded in the Guru’s Shabad), lives by Naam (Wisdom / Virtues) and remains linked with the Creator/Hukam.  ||4|| (sggs 1044).
: This world is a game created by Hukam (i.e. System-Rule-Law of Nature) in which human beings are afflicted with ego (Haumai). In this one body-temple there are five thieves (i.e. Bikaar: lust, anger, greed, attachment, pride) who are always doing evil (these five thieves have taken over the mind-elephant). (sggs 1096).

That said, in reality, nobody can totally remove his or her ego (Haumai) for it’s instilled within all beings.

In fact, it defines our relationship with ourselves and our world, essentially providing meaning to the self to insure survival, success, protection, procreation etc.

However what we are asked by the Gurbani is to annihilate the negative aspect or negative impact of the BLOATED egotism (Haumai– ਹਉਮੈ), which kills our Original Nature (i.e. Jot Saroop).

One may ask: ‘if my Original Nature is Jot Saroop, what happened to it?’ How do we lose track of it?

Our Original Nature has been killed (i.e. superimposed) by the NEGATIVE impact of false ego-sense (Haumai, Aapaa-Bhaav…) and its numerous faults (i.e. Bikaar: lust, anger, greed etc.). Haumai is like a curtain, veil or partition-wall between our deluded mind and its Jot Saroop. That’s all!

: Within (the Jeeva – an individual being) dwells the Invisible Rabb, but (the Jeeva) cannot comprehend this because (within the Jeeva) lies the veil of false ego-sense (Haumai). In attachment to Maya, all the world is asleep. Tell me, how can this doubt (of the Jeeva) be dispelled? ||1|| (sggs 205).

Hence the Gurbani tells us negative aspect or negativity of false ego-sense (Haumai) is the massive disease (‘ਰੋਗੁ’) or virus of the mind, which dims the effulgence of the Jot Saroop. It feels real because we attach our ego to some perceived parameters in some form, such as power, status, beauty, youth, strength, wealth, education or knowledge, possessions, Jaat Paat (casteism) etc. Prior to the movement of the false ego-sense (Haumai), the Gurbani tells us our mind is Jot Saroop.

: The unenlightened persons (Manmukhs) of corrupt thinking are deluded by doubt because of the mental disease of false ego-sense (Haumai) within their mind. (sggs 301).
: O Nanak! The diseases (born or begotten) of ego are wicked (sggs 1153).
: Ego is a massive disease in the world (sggs 1278).
: A human body inflicted with the mental disease of false ego-sense (Haumai) endures great pain of this mental disease. (sggs 1172).

The negative or false ego-sense (Haumai) arise within when the conditioned mind identifies with the gross body-frame instead of its Jot Saroop (Mool).

: O my mind, you are filled with the filth of egotism (sggs 35).

Faults of the false ego sense (Haumai) are ugly and filthy. They are the famous ‘FIVE’ — lust, anger, greed, attachment, and pride.

In turn, these ‘5’ Bikaar have their countless variations.

However, these ‘5’ are harmless to a Wise person (i.e. Gurmukh, Giaanee-ਗਿਆਨੀ…) for he knows how to effectively control them, use them or handle them.

To the contrary, they are very harmful to an ignorant or a fool (i.e. Agiaanee-ਅਗਿਆਨੀ) for he does not know how to effectively control them! Instead, these five control a fool.

Negativity of false ego-sense (Haumai) converts one’s life into a battlefield. And, in a battlefield, there are seen only enemies!

Thus — by its very nature — false ego-sense (Haumai) can only destroy and create chaos (‘Rol Ghacholaa’).

Its negative impact destroys inner Beauty, goodness and auspiciousness.

: (O fool) your mind is tied with the rope of ‘ego’ (ਪੈਖੜੁ-ਢੰਗਾ: A rope tied to the rear legs of an animal, which does not let the animal run or walk freely!) (sggs 1189).
  • This ego is hell, and hell is a dragon not diminished by oceans of water. It drinks down the seven seas, yet the heat of that man-burner does not become less. It makes a morsel out of a world and gulps it down. Its belly keeps shouting: Is there any more? (Rumi).

Hence, the negative affect of false ego-sense (Haumai) is the hell. For this hellish inferno only promotes hellish consciousness and hellish existence, here and now! On the other hand, its death promotes ‘Sukh‘ or heavenly existence, here and now!

: In Haumai one reflects on good or bad deeds (Paap Punn). In Haumai one experiences hell and heaven (comforts and pain etc.). (sggs 466).

If we want to be Happy in life, the Gurbani urges us to bring the mind back to its Original, Natural State of Being by removing this deadly virus called false ego-sense (Haumai).

: The mind becomes pure when ego is killed (sggs 1049).
: So long the mortal is smitten with ‘ego’, a river (of desires, Trishanaa) flow within. O Nanak! Desire is exhausted only when the mind is imbued with the Naam (Wisdom, Virtues, Truth…). (sggs 1091). (sggs 1091).

Truth and falsehood can not coexist

The Nature of our Jot Saroop is Pure Beauty which is opposite of the ugly faults of the false-ego-sense (Haumai).

Aptly, the Gurmat Giaan or Wisdom of the SGGS tells us that Truth and falsehood can NOT coexist.

: Check it out and see in your mind — falsehood does not mix in Truth. (sggs 313).
: The Truth is Pure; (so long the man’s) mind is impure (with Haumai, Bikaar, etc.); he cannot realize (the Truth) (sggs 755).
: False-ego-sense (Haumai) is opposed to the divine Naam; both cannot coexist in the mind. (sggs 560).

Wisdom cures mental illness

Taking the Wisdom of the SGGS and then willingly living it in daily life can cure the mind’s ailments.

: Constantly remembering the Naam (i.e. constantly applying the Naam — Wisdom — to my daily life, I) ever enjoy Bliss. In the shelter and with the support of the Naam (i.e. Wisdom — ਗਿਆਨਵਾਨ ਹੋਕੇ), I have brought the ‘five’ villains (i.e. Bikaar: lust, anger, greed etc.) under my control. ||3|| (sggs 750).
(O crazy man) you act in corruption (ਬਿਕਾਰ: lust, anger, greed, etc.), and put on ostentatious shows, but without Awareness of the Shabad, you have fallen into confusion. You are afflicted with greatest pain from the disease of egotism. Following the Gurmat, you can be rid of this disease. ||6|| (sggs 906).

However, as repeatedly reminded by the Gurbani, we cannot know our Original Nature unless and until the negative impact of false ego-sense (Haumai) is killed. Since the false ego-sense (Haumai) alone is the cause of all our misery, its annihilation is desirable.

: When one conquers his (own) mind, victory (Fatih-‘ਫਤਿਹ’) is obtained; (Maya’s) snares are cut; and one’s (Mayaic) wanderings cease. (sggs 258).
: Rare is the one who knows the medicine which, by using it, he annihilates the mind (does not accept the negative impact of Haumai, Bikaar). (‘Rare’ person attuned to the Guru’s Shabad – Giyan or Wisdom) understands that the mind attached to the Guru’s Shabad is untouched by the negative impact of Haumai, Bikaar), this is known to ‘Janu’ (Gurmukh, Daas, Bhagat…). ||1|| (sggs 665).

Abidance of the mind in its Original Nature (Jot Saroop) is the divine ‘Vision or Darshan‘ of Reality, Rabb or Mool. The word ‘Vision or Darshan‘ simply means Knowledge or Giaan (ਗਿਆਨ) free from duality of the seer or seen — the state of BECOMING the Gurbani.

:Those who have understood (Hari or Mool) ‘Ik Mann Ik Chit‘ or single mindedly, the burden of their egotism (Haumai) has been removed from their mind.(sggs 302).
: (The mind) cannot be pleased simply by someone saying or claiming something; this can happen only if false ego-sense (Haumai) leaves the mind, (this way, the mind) is satisfied. ||2|| (sggs 325).
: When false ego-sense (ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ, etc.) is dissolved, (one) himself becomes Rabb-Like (ਉਹ ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ). (sggs 202).

The Gurbani gives us an impetus, a thirst and tremendous enthusiasm to put forth our sincere efforts. In a practical and a simple Way, it helps us Understand and Guides (ਸੇਧ) us so that our mind may Awaken to to its Jot Saroop within. More we understand the deeper we go and more the idea of ‘ਮੈ ਮੈ’ or ‘I, I’ (the notion of separateness – false ego-sense) disappear.

: Through the Gurmat (Wisdom of the SGGS), the sickness of my egotism (Haumai) has been dispelled, and my pain (of egotism) is over and done; (the Wisdom or Giaan) of my (True) Identity has consumed my identical identity (i.e., false identity or ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ). (sggs 78).
: The egotism dies while living Virtues (in daily life). Being imbued with the Shabad (Upadesh, Wisdom….) the mind reforms. (sggs 936).
: When one’s mind dies in the Shabad gains Knowledge and conviction, and (he) sheds egotism and ‘Vikaar’ (sggs 162).

In a nutshell Gurbani is counseling our mind not be in defiance / denial of the Creator within:

: (O mind!) Why Be in Defiance of the Creator. Denial of the One Who Created and Sustained Your Existence is an Impiety (Vice). (sggs 1200).
: Realizing the Creator Father within, my spirituality is no longer without a Protector. (‘Veyjat’ = an orphan child). (sggs 796).
: The Messages and Narratives of my Guru has Sculptured my Vice filled Mind (ਪੁਤ Putt) into a Virtue filled one (ਸਪੁਤ SaPutt). (sggs 951).
: Kabeer, the denial of the creator is on account of my vices or Bikaar; my human birth (i.e. spirituality) is being lost in such defiance.(sggs 482).
6 ॥ : My spirituality was dead on account of my ego. The complete Enlightenment of the Guru’s Shabad (Upadesh, Wisdom…) Has Eliminated my Denial / Defiance of Him. (sggs 226).

  1. T. Singh Ji, as always, this is an enlightening simplification of Gurbani once again. To answer S. Gurdev Singh, our personal belie at the Sikh Renaissance is that there are two of ego:

Individuation as in self-awareness and identity which are necessary to progress in all mediums whether spiritual or worldly.

Hubris as in what we deem to be negative.

The Creator has bequeathed us with the gift of individuation but also free will. In our ignorance we allow individuation to devolve into Hubris or Haumai. The challenge for mankind is to annihilate hubris but retain individuation. However, we will like T. Singh’s views on this as well.

  2. We are here on Earth, and whether we know why the Divine Creator gave us an ego or not, it is what is, we all have an ego,
now what? I appreciate this blog that helps me understand bit by bit what is important and where to focus my attention according to the guiding principals of the SGGS.

  3. Do we humans gets Inflicted with this diesese after our birth or we are sent into this Divine Play of the Almighty with a naturally flawed mind

First off, the Gurbani’s Divine or Rabb (or God, or whatever name you want to give) is not that of Yogi, or that of Hindu, or that of Muslim…:
(sggs 1160).

That is, the Gurbani’s Rabb is neither in the west, nor in the south, nor in seventh sky, “there yonder”, etc. But, the Gurbani’s Rabb pervades all over (Universal Energy, ਫੈਲਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ, ਤੇ ਸਭ ਦਾ ਸਾਂਝਾ) – in you, in me, in everyone else and everywhere in Kudrat (Law of Nature, Hukam…). In other words, we are not separate from the Gurmat’s Rabb. However, the illiterate and the crafty Pujaaree groups or the corrupt Pujaaree sytem has misled masses.
(sggs 469).
(sggs 1427).

One’s we understand we are not separate from the Gurmat’s Rabb, things start making sense.

Very aptly you quoted: “ਲਿਵ ਛੁੜਕੀ ਲਗੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਅਮਰੁ ਵਰਤਾਇਆ”. See this post for more on it.

  4. Singh Sahib Jio,

Pl. excuse my Ignorance. In your response you stated that

” Since only the humans GET INFLICTED with this disease called “Haumai”,

I am still confused. Do we humans gets Inflicted with this diesese after our birth or we are sent into this Divine Play of the Almighty with a naturally flawed mind ?

    In Gurbani it stated that ” ਮਾਤ ਗਰਭ ਮਹਿ ਆਪਨ ਸਿਮਰਨੁ ਦੇ ਤਹ ਤੁਮ ਰਾਖਨਹਾਰੇ”

    and then

From the above two verses, I derieve this meaning “That in Mother Womb Creator gives ITs Remembrance and protect the Child & then

That after our birth, temptations in the World play apply their effects and our attention to Almighty breaks . Then how Worldly Tempations can be more powerful the LIV or SIMRAN or Creator, which protects the child ?

Because of my limited knowledge, I get confused and develop conflicting views and cannot develops Clarity of the Concept.

I want to walk on this path of Wisdom. So Kindly help me. I feel very grateful. I take it a Divine Intervention.

    Thanks & Regards.

    Gurdev Singh

  5. Haumai gives rise to evil inclinations — animal nature.

That Gur-Shabad which talks about mankind being afflicted with the psychological disease of egoism, also talks about some animals afflicted with similar diseases. For example, the disease of Kaam (lust…) overwhelms the elephant; because of the disease of vision, the moth is burnt to death; because of the disease of the sound of the bell, the deer is lured to its death; because of the disease of taste, the fish is caught; because of the disease of smell, the bumblebee is destroyed…

The Gurbani also remind the mind that your True Nature is not Haumai, but “Jot Saroop”:
(sggs 441).

Hence, the Gurbani urges to aanihilate the Haumai (false ego-sense):
(sggs 424).

In addition the crooked nature of the human mind is also compared in the Gurbani with the behavior of many birds, insects, etc. For example, crow, parrot, vulture, moth, bumble bee, etc.
(sggs 468).

  6. Thanks

    I took that meaning after I read Prof. Sahib Singh Ji, Steek, where he explained the meaning of above verse as ” ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!

    Sir,

Kindly also shed some light on ” Who is your creator?

I was under Impression that I am a part of the Divine Soul, ( like an Ocean and a drop metaphor ), sent into this world play by the Almighty lord Itself.

Again I got this meaning from following verse

Apprecite your time and guidance. I might not be reading Gurbani, in between the lines as I am not well versed in Punjabi.

    Regards,

    Gurdev Singh

  7. Thank you Bhai Sahib Gurdev Singh Ji for you reply. Wel come to the Gurbani Blog!

why our Creator gave Ego to us

    Who’s is your “Creator”?
    Where does that “Creator resides?

Since only the humans get inflicted with this disease called “Haumai”, they also have to suffer its consequences unless they do something to remedy it. The Gurbani tells us humans (“ਮਾਨੁਖ”) how to remedy it, how to deal with it, etc! If one has cancer, he is the one who will suffer, not his dogs or cats!

  8. Respected Singh Sahib Ji,

    SSA

As per Gurbani Creator ITSELF gave Ego to Human Beings

If Haumai Kills our True Nature then why our Creator gave Ego to us.

    Regards

    Gurdev Singh
