Mind Must Remain in its Khorr – True Home

There are two types of homes (Ghar-ਘਰ) — (1) a physical home where we live. It has a physical address and it is constructed of various construction materials, and (2) ‘Nij Ghar-ਨਿਜ ਘਰ’ where one’s mind lives. It is also know by many other names such as ‘Khorr-ਖੋੜ’ etc.

Repeated travelling of a cart makes ‘Khorr’ in a dirt road (grooves, tracks, cavities, ‘

If both wheels of the cart remains in those grooves or ‘Khorr‘, then both the cart and the bulls pulling the cart without wander off the tracks.

If both wheels don’t stay in the grooves or ‘Khorr‘ , then they will certainly wander off the tracks.

Similarly, the Gurmat Wisdom of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib (SGGS) teaches us the mind must remain in its ‘Khorr’, the Real Home — Nij Ghar (‘ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ’), Sahaj Ghar (‘ਸਹਜ ਘਰੁ’), Sahaj Guphaa (‘ਸਹਜ ਗੁਫਾ’), Mool, Essence, True Nature or Jot Saroop, Wisdom, Virtues, etc.

Because, according to the Gurbani, the Preetam’ (Rabb, Universal Energy …) dwells in the ‘Khorr’ or ‘cave of the of the Heart’!

: Preetam lives in the cave of the Heart (sggs 1121). (sggs 1121).
: This body is the ‘Hari’ Mandir‘ (Hari’s Temple, but this secret) is revealed by the Jewel of the Divine Wisdom (Aatm-Giaan, Brahm Giaan, Divine Knowledge …). (sggs 1346).
: Engaging in Bhagti by becoming the Gurmukh, (the mind) obtains ‘Sahaj Ghar‘ where (the mind is always) in a state of equanimity (Natural state of Being, state of Wisdom, ਅਡੋਲ ਅਵਸਥਾ…). (sggs 686).

When the mind remains in its ‘Khorr’ — Real Home  — it does not wander around in delusion.

In Essence, the mind never left its ‘Nij Ghar‘ (Sukh Saagar, Sach Khand…) but only in delusion, doubt, ignorance, slumber of Maya (Bhav Saagar), and so on!

To say it otherwise, if the mind does not remain in its ‘Khorr’, then, separated from Hukam (System or Rule or Law of Nature, Shabad, Naam…), it will go astray and wander around in illusion, love of Maya, doubt, duality, etc.

: KHAKHA (a letter of the Gurmukhi alphabet): When the mind (who has realized Giaan or spiritual Knowledge) comes to remain in the ‘Khorr’ (of Heart, Mool, Jot-Saroop, ਅੰਤਰ-ਆਤਮਾ ਰੂਪ ਖੁੱਡ ਵਿੱਚ, etc.), (then) it does not leave this ‘Khorr’ to wander in the ten directions. (sggs 343).
: Here and there (i.e., everywhere) Raam pervades; (I) see Raam in the cave of my Heart. (sggs 1307).

So, what is this ‘Khorr’? In essence, for a Sikh the ‘Khorr’ is the Gurmat Wisdom of the SGGS.

The mind which is linked to it remains moored to its Mool or Jot Saroop within — ‘Nij Ghar’, ‘Khorr‘, True Nature, Bibek Budhi (discerning intellect), GiaanKnowledge. Before the rise of the phantom of the mind (Haumai, imaginations, Phurnae-ਫੁਰਨੇ…), that’s what the mind was!

: The Enlightenment contained within the Guru’s Shabad eliminates one’s false ego-sense and vices; and create a state of Godly Realization. (sggs 940).

However, when separated from its Mool, the mind perceives duality, and sees the world as ‘phantom city’ in the sky!.

The Gurbani tells that when the bull of the mind is established in this ‘Khorr’, then it dose not wander off or go hither and thither.

: As the water remains confined in a pitcher, (just so) the mind is restrained by the Spiritual Wisdom. But (as) the pitcher cannot be shaped without the water, (just so) there can be no Spiritual Wisdom without the Guru. ||5|| (sggs 469).
: With Gurmat (Wisdom of the SGGS), the mind abides in its own Home within (Nij Ghar), and through the Shabad (the mind) become attached to the Divine (Naam: Wisdom, Virtues…). (sggs 568).

According to the Gurbani, the ultimate ‘Fatih’ or Victory is to be obtained on one’s own doubt-ridden mind which is gone strayed from its ‘Khorr’ chasing after the mirage like enchanting world-appearance.

: When one conquers his (own) mind, victory (Fatih-‘ਫਤਿਹ’) is obtained; (Maya’s) snares are cut (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਕੱਟੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ); and one’s (Mayaic-ਮਾਇਆ ਪਿਛੇ ਭਟਕਣਾ) wanderings cease. (sggs 258).
: (With the Gur-Wisdom) the chains of mental diseases (Bikaar, ਆਤਮਕ ਰੋਗ, etc.) and fears have been broken, my mind has come to know Happiness within its own true Home (Nij Ghar). (sggs 339).

The Gurbani reminds us that the mind in love with Maya isn’t prepared to know its Mool. However, the Gurbani’s Wisdom prepares it.

Accordingly, the SGGS repeatedly urges to constantly (everyday, ‘Anadin’, ‘Aath Pahar’...) keep the mind in check by keeping it engaged in Shabad-Vichaar. Thus, keeping it in line with Wisdom or Bibek Budhi (discriminating intelligence) presented by the Gurbani— constant self-examination, impartial self-analysis and discerning introspection.

: When the mind is cleaned (scrub, polish, scour-ਸੁਧ ਜਾਂ ਸਾਫ ਕਰਨਾ…) with the Jewel of the Giaan (Gur-Giaan or Spiritual Wisdom), it does not become dirty again (with Bikaar). (sggs 992).
  • ਗਿਆਨ ਖੜਗੁ ਲੈ ਮਨ ਸਿਉ ਲੂਝੈ ਮਨਸਾ ਮਨਹਿ ਸਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੩॥: I fight to overcome the desires of my mind with the double-edged Sword (Kharag) of Wisdom (of the Satguru). ||3|| (sggs 1022).
  • ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਨੂਆ ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਓਈਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥: Through the Gurmat, hold your mind steadfast, and in this way, drink the Amrit (Giaan-Wisdom). ||1||Pause|| (sggs 332).

Abiding in unchanging Awareness (Mool, True Nature as Jot Saroop…) there is an eternal living in this true Home (Nij Ghar – ‘ਨਿਜ ਘਰੁ’, ‘ਸਹਜ ਘਰੁ’, Own Home).

: O Kabeer! The mind becomes like a bird (as bird flies in different directions in search for food, etc., similarly) the mind soars and flies in ten directions (i.e., wanders around chasing mirage, desires, sense objects, Maya, etc.). According to the company (a man) keeps, gets the similar reward (i.e., acquires similar thinking or Soch, qualities…) ||86|| O Kabeer! (Through living a life with Wisdom, divine Virtues…, I) have realized That Place within (i.e., Nij Ghar, Jot Saroop…) which I was searching. What I called ‘someone else’ before (i.e., whom I used to consider separate from me before, now I) have realized I’m That. ||87|| (sggs 1369).
: By becoming the Gurmukh (i.e. Enlightened state of the mind developed by Internalizing the Enlightening Message embedded in the Guru’s Shabad), a rare one contemplates on the Essence of the Creator-Connecting Shabad. By becoming the Gurmukh, one realizes the Creator-Connecting Baanee. By becoming the Gurmukh, a are one accords the exceptional Creator-Imbued Mind. By becoming the Gurmukh, one Realizes (the Creator) Within Conscience (Nij Ghar). By becoming the Gurmukh, one internalizes the Way towards Creator-Realization (Within the Conscience-Nij Ghar). Nanak, by becoming the Gurmukh, Realize the One Creator through the spirituality of the Shabad. ॥69॥ (sggs 946).

The Wisdom of the SGGS guides the deluded mind of its learners (i.e., Sikhs) to trace its steps back to this true Home, within. Such a Timeless and Universal treasure we have in the form of the Gurbani (SGGS).

: O defective mind, you can not be trusted because you remain very intoxicated (by Maya). Just as DONKEY‘s leg-chain is removed only after it is loaded (similarly O mind, you should be controlled by loading you with the Wisdom / Virtues, and thus you should not be given a chance to be enticed Maya, vices or Bikaar etc.). ||1||Pause|| (sggs 815).

In fact, the reason all the religions and the religious texts exist is this phantom called the mind that has gone strayed from its ‘Khorr’ in delusion!

: (Man) goes astray when (he) sees (the world) like a phantom city (in the sky); but nowhere (he) can find eternal stability (in Phantom). (sggs 548).

Since the Gurbani is a mirror of the mind, the Gurmat Giaan or Wisdom of the SGGS channelized our minds to Enlightenment!

: (Attaching itself to Maya) this mind becomes Mayaic (engrossed in vices or Bikaar – lust, anger, greed, attachment, pride; and their countless variations), and when it’s united with the Divine within this mind becomes Divine (Bliss-Nature, Virtues…). (By identifying with) the physical body made of the five-elements, this mind becomes like the physical body (i.e. forgets its Original Nature as Jot Saroop, wanders gratifying senses etc.). When this mind is controlled and remains in the Higher State of Wisdom (i.e. Enlightenment, Bliss, Sahaj etc.), then the mind reflects on the Omnipresent or All-pervading Creator. ||33|| (sggs 342).

  3. Simran is associated with ‘Life’. Life is regarded precious gift of God, as long as life is there Maya becomes necessity in order to propagate physical development of ‘Body’. Spiritual development cannot be accomplished without being a ‘Body’ there. So both acts such as life and spiritual gain are creativity of God, some fail to recognize that concept and become atheists and others merely try and act as much as possible to be called ‘Religious’. As people irrespective of age stand at different levels of wisdom, they require gradual teaching of Guru’s word i.e. knowledge of Shabad. They need to be taught what is MAYA, who has created it and why? Gurbani is so deep in meaning, just its awareness wouldn’t accomplish its purpose unless truly adopted and practised. I am conscious of the fact that Gurbani’s true impact on many today is adverse due to mayaic influence such as self ego. Bhai Sahib jio, your efforts are valued and appreciated.

  6. Bhai Sahib ji,
It is true that Guru’s Shabad unfolds the mysteries of life and paves a way forward about how to distract our mind from Mayaic influences. Such wisdom is only conceibable by God’s Grace provided one endeavours on His Naam. Shri Guru Ramdas ji’s composition of Lavan in Shri Guru Granth Sahib ji is a good example of fulfilment of the life objective.

  7. Thanks Brother!

This art is thru the grace of GuRu and/or Naamu only.

…its consumption requires needful handling so as to enable us to tread on ‘Mission of Life’.

But how? It is the Gurbani tells us how to do that:
(sggs 911).

(sggs 1427).

  9. Veer Tirlochan Singh Duggal Ji,
refering to the part of your message as
Maya is part and parcel of our living, it cannot be totally abandoned,
but its consumption requires needful handling so as to enable us to tread on ‘Mission of Life’

This is equally true but how to acquire the art of needful handling ? This art is thru the grace of GuRu and/or Naamu only.
Thus one should always seek for the grace of GuRu by way of Ardaasi to Prabhu.

  10. Bhai Sahib jio
Sharing Guru’s word with people is a noble way forward. It helps the mind to understand the virtues of spiritual path. Maya is part and parcel of our living, it cannot be totally abandoned,
but its consumption requires needful handling so as to enable us to tread on ‘Mission of Life’.

It is thru GuRu only one gets to know ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ and it is this ਨਾਮੁ which keeps on a straight path in all situations one can face during the journey of life.

This message clearly tells how Munn can remain in its Khorr. The only way is that the Munn be connected with ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਾ.
This way Munn will set in its Khorr of its own thru the grace of SatiGuRu.

  15. Waheguru ji ka khalsa,Waheguru ji ki fateh!!
Thanks a lot for a very very relevant issue taken up by you in the article.Gurbani has explained in myriad ways about the mercurial nature of the mind. Its only naam simran which keeps it under leash.Sri Guru Granth Sahibji very kindly guide us on mind’s temperament-
“O vicious mind,no faith can be placed in you; you are totally intoxicated. The donkey’s leash is only removed after the load is placed on his back”-(ang 815 Bilawal m 5)
Lets keep mind under the shower load of Simran for it to stay in a balanced state.
