Manmukh and the Gurmukh Giaan

The Gurbani reminds us that if our choice in life is to retain a Manmukh mentality, we cannot attain the Gurmukh-Giaan (Aatam-Giaan , Divine Knowledge of the Gurbani, Gurmat, Brahm Giaan, “ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਿਆਨੋ”, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ…).

Accordingly, the Gurbani urges us to cultivate the Gurmukh nature, hear and now.

: By searching, the True Home (Mool…), the place of the Gur-Giaan (Divine Knowledge, Wisdom, or Aatam-Giaan of the Gurbani) is found. The Gurmukh (the follower of the Truth of the Gurmat) obtains spiritual wisdom, while the Manmukh (self-willed) does not. (sggs 1112).

Who is the Manmukh, and who is the Gurmukh?

In nutshell, the Manmukh is disconnected from his Mool (Source, Origin Truth…); he is not established in the Gurbani’s Bibek Budhi – ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰਮਤ ਦੀ ਪੂਰੀ ਸੋਝੀ ਨਹੀ ਹੈ;; his mind is free to escape through the senses and run after sense-objects; his Akal (ਅਕਲ-intellect) follows his mind’s dictates; he remains uncontented; he remains in love with Maya -ਮਾਇਆ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ (Mayadhaaree); he is the denier of the Truth (ਸਚ); he is doubt and duality-ridden; he is “Mugadhu Gubaaru” (ਮੁਗਧੁ ਗੁਬਾਰੁ-foolish, full of inner filth or Bikaars…); and so on.

: They alone are Manmukhs who do not Realize the Shabad (sggs 1054).
: Manmukh moolahu bhuliaa vichi labu lobhu ahankaar (sggs 316).

To the contrary , the Gurmukh transcends Maya; he is free of the false ego-sense (Haumai, ਆਪਾ ਭਾਵ, “ਮੈ ਮੈ”) and duality (Doojaa-Bhaav); he abides in the Divine Hukam (ਹੁਕਮੀ ਬੰਦੇ-ਅਮਲੀ ਜੀਵਨ, ਹੁਕਮੀ ਜੀਵਨ…); he is linked to his Mool within (ਮੂਲ: Source, Origin, Truth, Jot…) and ever remains so; he is contented in all situations (Sach Santokhee); he is the follower of the Truth; his mind is linked to Antar-Aatmaa; he restrains his mind instead of following his mind; he remains integrated in the state of “ਇਕ ਮਨਿ ਇਕ ਚਿਤਿ ” – Ik Mani Ik Chiti; he is detached in the midst of Maya – ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ ਉਦਾਸੀ; he is established in Bibek Budhi – ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰਮਤ ਦੀ ਪੂਰੀ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੈ; his Akal (ਅਕਲ , wisdom, intellect, reason, etc.) follows the Gurbani (Aatam Giaan Spiritual Wisdom of the Gur-Shabad); he is Aatam Giaanee or Brahm Giaanee ; he is established in Chauthaa Pada or Turiyaa Avasthaa (Tenth Gate, Sahaj Avasthaa – Natural State of Being; Sunn Samaadhi, ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ, Shabad-Surti, etc.); he knows all the “Way of the soul” (“ਜਾਨੈ ਆਤਮ ਕੀ ਰਹਤ”, ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ…); he is Jeevan Mukat (living Liberated or Enlightened); he is the fully “Awakened” one who is established at Dasam Duaar (the Tenth-Gate, the Highest Plane of Consciousness)…

: By becoming the Gurmukh, Understand and Realize (the Reality, Truth, Mool…) through the Shabad. (sggs 1041).
: By becoming the Gurmukh, when one Realizes his Mool (Source, Origin…), then his mind (that has become stable-ਅਡੋਲ) abides in the Heart within (sggs 945).

According to the Gurbani, only by becoming the Gurmukh one can Realize, Know, or Understand the Divine Light ( “ਚਾਨਣੁ”, ਜੋਤਿ-ਰੂਪ, ਜੋਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ, Light, Spiritual Wisdom, Aatam-Giaan, Brahm-Giaan, the Truth, and so on).

And, without becoming the Gurmukh, one remains a Manmukh –the opposite of the Gurmukh.

According to the Gurbani, a Manmukh is “Mugadhu Gubaaru” (ਮੁਗਧੁ ਗੁਬਾਰੁ).

Mugadhu” (ਮੁਗਧੁ) = unwise, stupid, ignorant (in darkness), silly, foolish, deluded…

Gubaaru” (ਗੁਬਾਰੁ) = perplexed, filthy (inner filth: Kaam, Krodh, Lobh, etc.: lust, anger, greed, etc.)…

: The Gurmukh Knows the Divine Light, while the foolish Manmukh gropes around in the darkness of ignorance (sggs 20).

Consequently, the Manmukh looses or wastes his life, while the Gurmukh is always victorious… : sggs 867).

In nutshell, the Gurmukh burns away all his worldly intellect (all Mayaic Budhi, ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਸਿਆਣਪਾਂ…). He only retains the Essence of the Spiritual Wisdom (“ਤਤੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ” – ਪ੍ਰਚੰਡ ਗਿਆਨ, ਅਸਲ ਗਿਆਨ, ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਅਸਲ ਸੂਝ…).

: Sabh budhee jaaleeahi iku rahai tatu giaanu (sggs 1413).
(sggs 935).
