Igniting Spark

The Gurbani is the igniting spark, which lits the blazing fire of Prachand Giaan (Divine Knowledge, Wisdom, Aatam-Giaan …) within, which drives away the darkness of ignorance of our Mool (ਮੂਲ, Joti-Svaroopa …).

  • ਗਿਆਨੁ ਪ੍ਰਚੰਡੁ ਬਲਿਆ ਘਟਿ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਘਰ ਮੰਦਰ ਸੋਹਾਇਆ ॥: Giaanu prachandu baliaa ghati chaananu ghar mandar sohaaiaa (sggs 775).

How long it takes for this ignition to happen? The Gurbani indicates often one moment (“ਏਕ ਨਿਮਖ”, “ਏਕ ਪਲਕ”, “ਖਿਨੁ”, “ਪਲੁ” …)! In which one (i.e., a Manmukh, a Saakat, a Asant …) becomes transformed into a Gurmukh. The Gurbani affirms as follows:

  • ਸਰਬ ਬੈਕੁੰਠ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਮੋਖ ਪਾਏ ॥ ਏਕ ਨਿਮਖ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਏ ॥: Sarab baikunth mukti mokh paae. Ek nimakh hari ke gun gaae (sggs 290).
  • ਚਿਤਿ ਆਵੈ ਓਸੁ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਤਾ ਨਿਮਖ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਤਰਿਆ ॥੪॥: Chiti aavai osu paarbrahmu taa nimakh simarat tariaa ||4|| (sggs 70).

When this significant moment would take place is unpredictable, but, when it does happen, it lights up the mind; and this fire (of Prachand Giaan) in the mind destroys the old self (Manmukh …), and Awakens the Gurmukh in a person from within.

  • ਕੋਟਿ ਪਰਾਧ ਮਿਟੇ ਖਿਨ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਜਾਂ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਰੇ ॥੧॥: Koti praadh mite khin bheetar jaan gurmukhi naamu samaare (sggs 670).

Although a spark may be lit, but the Jeeva also need to make earnest self-efforts. Doctor may give us the medication, but we must administer it in accordance with his instructions to get cured!

Otherwise, we have no personal responsibility. It does not work that way – we can’t dodge our own basic responsibility!

If a person is ill, his mere reading of the medicine’s label without taking the medicine in accordance with the instructions will not cure him. To be cured of the disease and the related agony, one has to properly take the medicine and stop mere reading its label. Similarly, the Gurbani is only meant to be understood and lived, which demands sincere self-efforts on our part. Furthermore, mere reading or listening to recitations of the Gurbani in a ritualistic manner may be a good mundane trade, but that will not cure us from our psychological illness (Haumai, Bikaar, false ego-sense …).

The Gurbani tells us that we have obtained this human life for a very specific purpose (“ਕਾਮੁ” …).

Instead of wandering around “Avataa” (“ਅਵਤਾ”: ਅਵੈੜਾ, ਆਪ-ਹੁਦਰਾ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਘੁੰਮਣਘੇਰੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਫਸਿਆ, ਅਬੱਤਾ, ਕੱਬਾ, ਵਿਪਰੀਤ, ਉਲਟ, ਵਿਰੁੱਧ, ਆਕੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ, aimlessly or waywardly wandering around in the world …), the Gurbani urges us to fulfill that real purpose of this human life, here and now.

  • ਕਾਮੁ ਨ ਕਰਹੀ ਆਪਣਾ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਅਵਤਾ ਲੋਇ ॥: Kaamu n karahee aapanaa phirahi avataa loi. (sggs 320).
  • ਭਈ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਮਾਨੁਖ ਦੇਹੁਰੀਆ ॥ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਮਿਲਣ ਕੀ ਇਹ ਤੇਰੀ ਬਰੀਆ ॥ ਅਵਰਿ ਕਾਜ ਤੇਰੈ ਕਿਤੈ ਨ ਕਾਮ ॥ ਮਿਲੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਭਜੁ ਕੇਵਲ ਨਾਮ ॥੧॥: The Human Life has been Obtained. Our Life Time is the ONLY Opportunity to Realize the Creator Within. Give up other efforts (e.g. Karamkaand, rituals, formalities etc.) for they are of no avail to you. (Therefore) join the ‘Saadhsangat’ (Satsangee Jan, pious beings…) and join the Naam (i.e. take the Wisdom or Giaan). (sggs 12).

Thus, when we live the Gurbani and the Divine Hukam (not our own Mayaic whims: self-will or ਅਪਣੀ ਮਰਜੀ), then the “Gurmukhi Budhi” (Vivek-Budhi, Pure Intellect …) Awakens within and the Gurmukh inside us comes out of us on its own.

  • ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੁਧਿ ਪ੍ਰਗਟੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜਾਸੁ ॥: Gurmukhi budhi pragatee prabh jaasu (sggs 232).

The Gurbani challenges us to remember the target of life and not to wander around “Avataa“. Obviously, as the Gurbani indicates, this will require unbroken focus (ਏਕਾਗਰ ਚੀਤ) and vigilance (ਸਾਵਧਾਨ, alertness, wakefulness, mindfulness …) on our part, which, in turn, will demand some self-efforts!

  • ਹੋਹੁ ਸਾਵਧਾਨ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਗੁਰ ਸਿਉ ॥: Hohu saavadhaan apune gur siou (sggs 895).
  • ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਉਸਤਤਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਸੰਤ ਮੀਤ ॥ ਸਾਵਧਾਨ ਏਕਾਗਰ ਚੀਤ ॥: Prabh kee ustati karahu sant meet. Saavadhaan ekaagar cheet (sggs 295).

In nutshell, the bottom line (ਮੁੱਕਦੀ ਗੱਲ) is that the Mayaic Budhi (Mayaic or worldly intelligence; Mayaic or worldly mind …) needs to be transmuted to the Gurbani’s Prachand Giaan (Divine Knowledge, Wisdom, Aatam-Giaan …).

  • ਕਹਿ ਕਬੀਰ ਬੁਧਿ ਹਰਿ ਲਈ ਮੇਰੀ ਬੁਧਿ ਬਦਲੀ ਸਿਧਿ ਪਾਈ ॥੨॥੨੧॥੭੨॥: Says Kabeer! (Wisdom) has taken away my (worldly) intelligence (ਅਕਲ). With this altered intelligence, now I have obtained Sidhi (Spiritual Perfection…). ||2||21||72|| (sggs 339).

    Gurbani is only meant to be understood and lived.
    Gurbani vich Naam da matlab hi Gyan hai te Jap da matlab hi samjhana hai, bujhna hai, vicharna hai. Is layi Naam japna kisi mantar nu ratna (ram-ram,vaheguru-vaheguru ya hor koi mantar,repetition) nahi balki Gyan samjhna(vicharna) hi hai. Sikh vi sakat manmukh hi rahe te gurbani de vich use kite Jap(u) da arth (meaning ) hi manmukha, sakat de like tikeyan to ratna(repetition ) samajh gaye.
