Gurbani Says Well Filled with Amrit is Within Your Body

The Gurmat Wisdom of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib (SGGS) teaches that its ‘ALL’ (Sabh Kichh-‘ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ’) within, Here and Now!

This ‘ALL’ (‘ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ’) also includes Amrit! Here is the Gurbani’s edict (ਫੈਸਲਾ)in this context:

: Deep Within this body is the well overflowing with the Amrit; the Water-carrier (one engaged in Naam-Jap or understanding the Gur-Shabad) draws and drinks it through the Shabad (sggs 570).
: A Guru oriented person (ਗੁਰੂ ਵਾਲਾ) is drenched with Amrit (i.e. Naam, Wisdom, Virtues – he has Internalized the Message of the Shabad), which he imparts to others. Those human beings who find the Gurbani agreeable to their mind (i.e. Who have BECOME THE GURBANI and live accordingly), their minds continually drink this Amrit – they continually live daily life by Naam, Wisdom, Virtues. (sggs 449).

Therefore — according to the Gurbani — those who look sublime thing like Amrit outside are doubt-ridden.

: (The Divine Virtues, Wisdom, Spiritual tranquility, Naam, Shabad, Amrit, Prabh, ਆਤਮਕ ਸੁਖ…) all that is within the Heart-Home; not outside. Who searches outside is deluded by doubts (sggs 102).

In addition, this ‘ALL’ or ‘EVERY THING’ also include Naam, Shabad, Wisdom (Brahm-Giyan), Mool (Source, Jot Saroop...), God, and so on.

: God’s Amrit Naam is like the nine treasures of the world (NOTE: Gurbani Re-defines the Pujaaree’s nine treasures here). It dwells in the human body itself. (sggs 293).
: Deep within is the sacred shrine (Teerath) of Giaan (Spiritual Wisdom…), which the Satigur has revealed. Bathing in (this sacred shrine), the pool of Amrit, filth of the mind (filth of Bikaars…) is removed and it becomes pure. (sggs 587).
: Within body is the true Amrit Sar (the true pool of Amrit); the mind (that dies through the Shabad) keeps drinking it with great Love. ||4|| (sggs 1046).

In fact, the Gurmat Wisdom of the SGGS calls this human body the pool of Amrit (‘ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਸਰੁ’) for we need it to practice Wisdom or Virtues in life!

: The Amrit (-Naam), with which the body remains fully-filled, is obtained by reflecting on the Shabad. (sggs 911).
: O my mind! Remain steady (Within) and do not wander around outside (searching for Amrit-Naam, Amrit-Giyan, Sukh or Happiness or Anand outside…). By searching around on the outside, you will only suffer great pain (for the remedy is within, not outside); Amrit (that will make you Happy…) is found Within. (sggs 598).

In short according to the Gurbani:
P
racticing Shabad-Vichaar or dying in Shabad or Becoming Gurbani = Drinking Amrit!

This Amrit can ONLY be realized/experienced/tatsed by becoming Gurmukh (Enlightened State of the Mind, Guru Shabad-Oriented).

: O Nanak! (However, those who have) become the Gurmukh drink the Amrit by reflecting on the Shabad (sggs 646).
: Wow Wow! Naam is the Amrit, which is obtained only by becoming a Gurmukh. (sggs 515).

Hence, Bhagat Kabeer Jee asks Satiguru to pierce his mind with the arrow of the Shabad, so that the slumbering mind (slumber of Maya) can Awaken to the Spiritual Wisdom (Brahm-Giaan) of the Guru Shabad.

  • ਕਬੀਰ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੈ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਸਬਦੁ ਜੁ ਬਾਹਿਆ ਏਕੁ ॥ ਲਾਗਤ ਹੀ ਭੁਇ ਮਿਲਿ ਗਇਆ ਪਰਿਆ ਕਲੇਜੇ ਛੇਕੁ ॥੧੫੭॥: O Kabeer! I got connected to the Satiguru (ਸੱਚ ਦਾ ਗਿਆਨ, Brahm-Giaan…); He aimed the Arrow of the Shabad at me. As soon as it struck me, I fell to the ground with a hole in my heart(i.e., I got connected with my Mool, Source…). ||157||(sggs 1372).

However — according to the Gurbani — those searching the sublime thing like Amrit outside are Manmukhs-Saakat-Mayadhaaree (Unenlightened, foolish …)!

: The foolish Manmukh does not understand (this mystery), (consequently) he goes out searching outside (sggs 754).

Why mind cannot and does not see Amrit within?

The Gurbani provides us with authoritative answers.

Why mind cannot and does not see Amrit within is because the effulgence of the Divine Lamp (of Bibek Budhi or discerning intellect…) within has become dim due to the accumulation of ‘filth‘ (ignorance, Maya, vices/Bikaar). Mind is nothing but thoughts-stuff (ਫੁਰਨੇ); and thoughts continuously come and go. Thus, mind is born every moment!

: The scum (i.e., impurity) of so many births is attached to this mind and it has become pitch black (sggs 651).
  • ਮਾਧੋ ਅਬਿਦਿਆ ਹਿਤ ਕੀਨ ॥ ਬਿਬੇਕ ਦੀਪ ਮਲੀਨ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥: O Maadho (i.e, Universal Energy)! (Man) is in love with ignorance. (As a result, his) Lamp of discerning intellect (ਪਰਖ ਵਾਲਾ ਦੀਵਾ – intellect that can discriminate between right and wrong…) has become dirty (i.e., dim or hazy). ||1||Pause|| (sggs 486).

On account of this ‘filth’ the mind searches for everything outside.

The Gurbani gives us wonderful example of a deer, who is known for searching for musk (Kastooree) in the bushes. In reality, the musk is stored within the deer’s own body, but illusioned, deer keeps searching it outside. Similarly, even though the Amrit dwells within our body, due to illusion we keep searching it in the gross objects of the outer world!

: Those who search for this Treasure (of the Naam) outside of the body, in other places, are foolish and inharmonious. They wander around in the wilderness of doubt, like the deer who (not knowing that the musk is ever present in his own body) searches for the musk in the bushes ||15|| (sggs 309).

The Gurbani gives us an another wonderful example of a wandering camel. While wandering around, the camel eats thorny bushes or thorny trees (e.g. ਕਿੱਕਰ etc.) even though they make his mouth bleed! Similarly, full of ‘filth’, the camel-mind also wanders around as a deer-mind does.

Worldly attachment is so strong that despite the suffering, we do not want to give it up.

: The Treasure (Naam) is deep within, O camel-like mind, but you wander around outside in doubt, searching for it (sggs 235).
: O my mind! The Treasure is within you, you do not seek it outside. Make (living daily life in accordance with Hukam: System-Rule-Law of Nature) your food and see through the eyes of those who have become the Gurmukh. (sggs 569).

Similarly, although the Amrit is within, our wandering mind also search the sublime thing such as Amrit outside, in other places and objects. In reality, it is ALL within!

Who is plundering this Amrit from within?

The Gurbani tells that the Amrit from within each one of us is being looted by the ‘five thieves‘ (Pnach Chor or Bikaar) — lust, anger, greed, attachment, pride (with their countless variations). The Gurbani explains it so beautifully as follows:

: Within this body dwell the five thieves: lust, anger, greed, attachment, and pride. They plunder the Amrit (-Naam, Virtues, Wisdom, etc., from within the body), but the Manmukhs do not realize it; (but once they are plundered, and so suffer, then…) no one hears their cry shout (i.e., then no one can help them). (sggs 600).

The SGGS further explains that the reason these ‘five thieves‘ are able to steal the Amrit from within is the lack or absence of Giyan-Wisdom

: (Persons) who have forgotten Naam (i.e., Giaan or Wisdom) always talk trash (i.e., about stuff that’s perishable, false, fleeting, useless, etc.). The five thieves (i.e., lust anger, greed, etc.) keep looting their Inner Home, and Haumai (false ego-sense) continuously burglarize their Inner Home. Saakat (in the hands of these thieves) are plundered, they do not know the taste of the Naam. (Persons) who have been robbed of their Amrit (Giaan or Wisdom…) though doubt (-ridden or wandering mind) remain in love with the poison (of Maya which destroys their spiritual life). (sggs 854).

The Gurbani Asserts There is only One Amrit

Not only its ‘ALL’ (‘ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ’ within — in order to clear our doubts — the Gurbani further asserts ‘There is only ONE AMRIT‘.

In other words, there is no ‘second‘ (‘Doojaa-ਦੂਜਾ’) — there is no ‘other’. To consider something ‘other’ (i.e. ‘second’) would be living in ignorance and duality — ‘Doojaa Bhaav‘. This is the Gurbani’s edict (ਫੈਸਲਾ):

: Nanak, there is ONLY ONE AMRIT (i.e. the Naam-Amrit for the mind to drink in); there is NO OTHER AMRIT at all. O Nanak! (This Naam) Amrit is within the mind (of everybody, but, it is), realized by ‘Gur Parsaadi’ (i.e. the Grace of the Guru’s Giyan-Wisdom…). (sggs 1238).
  • ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਏਕੋ ਸਬਦੁ ਹੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥: O Nanak! The Shabad alone is the Amrit; it is obtained by becoming the Gurmukhs. ||2|| (sggs 644).
The Naam-Amrit alone is sweet and that is the only immaculate Truth in the world (sggs 1259).
: Those who are Spiritually ignorant and blinded (by their love of Maya) remain attached to duality (sggs 1063).

Freedom to chose between poison and Amrit

The Gurmat Wisdom of the SGGS tells us that the One Creator (‘Kartaar‘, Universal Creative Energy, Hukam…) has attached two fruits to this world-tree — poision (Bikh-Maya…) and Amrit (-Naam: wisdom / Virtues).

: Poison (-Maya, which brings spiritual death) and Amrit (-Naam, which gives spiritual life) are created by the Kartaar. These two fruits have been attached to the world-tree. (sggs 1172).

Hence, both poison and Amrit are within all of us. For example:

  • If one has demerits within, he also has Virtues within.
  • If one has Bikaar within (i.e., lust anger, greed etc.), he also has good impressions or influences within. >
  • If one has baser desires or cravings within, he also has qualities like contentment (ਸੰਤੋਖ), Truth (ਸਤ), honesty (ਇਮਾਨਦਾਰੀ), mercy (ਦਯਾ), patience (ਧੀਰਜ), Sahaj (ਸਹਜ-Natural State of Being), Wisdom (ਗਿਆਨ), humility (ਮਨ ਨਿਮਾਣਾ, ਬੁਧਿ ਗਰੀਬੀ), sweet speech (ਮਿਠ ਬੋਲੜਾ), and so on.

As a matter of fact, poison will kill the spiritual or divine life (ਮਨੁਖਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਬਰਬਾਦੀ); and it will destroy family life, society, country, and the world.

: What merits is in the caste? It is the Truth that is to be assayed. If someone consumes poison he/she will die (i.e. Pride in caste is like deadly poison, whosoever consumes it, surely he/she will face the spiritual death). (sggs 142).

On the other hand, Amrit bestows upon us Enlightenment (Gurmukh Mindsete), spiritual life or Aatmak Jeevan (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ), stable life, Virtuous etc.

Choice is ours! We are given the freedom to chose.

It’s up to us if we want to accept, approve or practice poison (ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ) or Amrit (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ) in life!

The Gurmat Wisdom of the SGGS wants us to chose Amrit so that our entire life become Amrit (Enlightened, Gurmukh Mindset)!

: By walking on the Gurmat (Wisdom of the SGGS, whose mind becomes pure, he utters the Amrit Naam. (sggs 1334).

Clearly, the Message of the SGGS is totally contrary to what we hear from the self-serving Pujaaree (clergy: Granthis, Parcharaks, Ragis, Dhadees etc.) and the freeloading Deraa-Vaad Baabaas (ਵੇਹਲੜ) misleading people and fleecing the gullible by keeping them fearful, and greedy. Also by keeping people confused, selling them fake or concocted Dharma and God (ਨਕਲੀ ਧਰਮ ਅਤੇ ਰੱਬ), ‘Sach Khand‘, hell and heaven, bringing back the pre-1469 beliefs that have been rejected by Baabaa Nanak, and so on.

They are doing it purely for Golak (money, bread-ਰੋਟੀ…). No wonder we are urged by the SGGS to totally dismantle or abandon the corrupt and stagnant Pujaaree system with steady resolve and courage.

: (I have) escaped from searching outside; the Gur (Wisdom or Giaan of the Gur-Shabad…) has shown (me) within (my) Heart (sggs 1002).

  1. Sabhh kichh Gharr meh Baahar naahee….: GurrPita Arjun Devji advises us that all that you are looking for is already within your own mind body system. Whether its the happiness, peacefulness, or God, the Ultimate Creative Energy. It’s only an illusion that you will find it our there somewhere. You see you have been programmed from the time of birth that everything you have ever achieved, it was achieved from somewhere out there. But you need a Spiritual Master who will guide you to go inward and get to know all that is going on inside you i.e. breathing, heart beating and other bodily functions along with energies like the mind, ego, desires, greed, anger, etc. Ones who have walked on this path advised by the GurrPitaji have found a perfect balance in life, from inside and outside. Now they are in peace with all. Now they are ONE with ONE and are aware of this experiential truth with each and every breath. Now the awareness of “eternal bliss” flows like a stream of unexplainable taste to the mind and body system. The mind that was always running out and around in duality has come to stillness and enjoying the flow of the WORD along with each and every breath. Now the mind is not separate from HIM, now its part of HIM. Now there is no loneliness, mind is now in touch with HIM continuously. Gurr Pitaji assures us that now the pain of separation is gone for good and forever. Now there is no need to keep coming and going into the field of Karma. All karmic debt has been removed forever. The saintly energy has now woken up from the deep draught of HIS memory. The dying plant has come alive again and this time it’s born again to never ever die again. Now its very important that the mind stays on this spiritual journey by going thru the stages of meditation on the WORD. Become a Gurrmukh, the one who follows the WORD given by the Master and meditates on that WORD. Gurr Pitaji says do it until the mind becomes ONE with the ONE just as a flame merges with the other flame. When that happens there is no boundary of separation left. And as the wave is part of the ocean, become part of the Ultimate Creative Energy. The was arises from the ocean and vanished back into the ocean and can not exist without the ocean. Same way develop the understanding that you are the wave and HE is the ocean. But again this will happen only when you state saying the WORD and listen to it at the same time on daily basis so the mind can stop running around become still. As the mind learns to stay still, all that is stored within the mind body system will start to become clear to you. You will be able to see each and every one of them and how they function. The grand secret of creation will be revealed to you personally, tailored to your own personal mind body system. Guaranteed! (ssgs 102)

  2. Waheguru ji ka khalsa waheguru ji ki Fateh, First of all accept my dhandot for writing such a life changing article.
I was just blessed with this insight that to understand The concept of Amrit within is by thinking that we came in this world with invisible happiness in the amount of $100.Now every dollar (invisible happiness) can buy visible happiness in form of materials to satisfy any of five Sense organs. Now whatever visible material happiness we buy can’t be returned to get invisible happiness ($100)back.Now when we are about to run out of that invisible happiness ($balance) we start feeling boredom and unhappiness no matter how much materials we have accumulated for sensory gratification. Now where is that invisible happiness (Amrit) inside of our body and mind is deep secret which only satguru can disclose through His “ek Shabad” to His Loyal desciple ( Gursikh).I hope this example makes some sense.Bhul chuck muaf karana ji.waheguru ji ka khalsa waheguru ji ki Fateh.

  3. Dear T Singh Ji

I would like to support by saying the post and Gurbani are abundantly clear. The only difficulty, is when viewed with a pre conditioned consciousness.

  4. First, thank you Bhai Sahib for taking the time to send commend. Also, welcome to the Gurbani Blog!

Second, your question suggests either you did not understand the Gurbani’s answer, or you don’t want to understand.

It does not need my opinion or anybody else’s opinion. The sun does not need a lamp to show it!

For the Gurbani speaks for itself, provided we approach it with the intention of understanding it with open-mind, interest, and diligence.

Ritualistic reading of the Gurbani will not do the trick.

Also, Wisdom cannot be made to an order, gifted, inherited, purchased or stolen. Wisdom can only be Realized.

The Guru in that sense is an emperor, unselfishly having only the best interest of the disciple at heart, while expecting nothing in return.

So, please read the post again to fully digest the universal message of the Gurbani.

  7. With the blessing of the Sangat of seekers like yourself, may be one day I will realize oneness with my Mool (Source, Jot…), within
    Guru Amar Daas Sahib says:
: As the body-house (the Soul, Heart, etc.) is brimful with the Amrit (Naam), still, because of the deluded mind, the self-willed Manmukh (perverse, one in material consciousness, etc.) do not taste it. (Manmukh are) like deer who does not recognize its own musk-scent (that is located within its own body, but to find the musk-scent) it wanders around in doubt (sggs 644).

    Baabaa Nanak says:
: (O Prabhoo!) You are (like) River, I am (like) a fish in it. I cannot find Your Limit (sggs 25).

  8. Shabad , a word that refers to the Ultimate Creative Energy is the Guru, Meditating on synchronizing the Word with the breath, i.e. Jupp is start of the spiritual journey . Jupp leads to the second stage of Simran or Ajuppa Jupp., which leads to the thirst stage of Dhyaana where SatGuru is met, the inner light, the JOT. Staying on this spiritual journey lead to the final stage of Samadhi after HIS kirpa, i.e KARAM KHAND.
Amrit is recieved in the third stage of Dhyaana as Maha Russ, i.e chimm chimm barse amrit dhaara hymm.

  10. This knowledge of what is within is/can be to be obtained from Satiguru only. Thus ones meeting with Satiguru is must.
This meeting with Satiguru is thru Guroo (in our case SGGS ji) which is outside. I may be corrected if wrong.
