Fear only exists in the Mind

The Giyan-Wisdom, Upadesh or the Way of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib (SGGS) cures mental ailments! A case in point is ‘fear’ (ਡਰ, ਸਹਮ, ਭੈ, ਖੌਫ etc.).

The Gurbani in the SGGS asserts ‘fear’ does not exist anywhere except in one’s own mind — ‘ਭਉ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਹੋਇ’. Since fear causes mental disorder, it’s a big hurdle in one’s progress and success in life.

Root cause of fear

Fear in itself is a suffering — a person suffers what he or she fears!

In addition to greed and fake promises, ‘fear’ is the second thing the crafty and self-serving Pujaaree clique employs to fleece the masses and enslave their minds!

: The vice of greed keeps the mind absorbed in the poison of worldly desires; denying a rightful place to invaluable JEWEL (of Godly Realization, Godly Wisdom). ||1||Pause|| (sggs 487).

Before we ask the Gurmat Wisdom of the SGGS about the treatment or cure of ‘fear’, first, let’s ask the Gurbani about the root cause of ‘fear’.

According to the Divine Doctor in the Gurbani, the root cause of ‘fear’ is doubt (Bharam-‘ਭਰਮੁ’) superstitions, ignorance, etc.

In other words, if the mind is doubt-ridden, it will be fearful. This simply means that once the doubt (Bharam-‘ਭਰਮੁ’) is eradicated, ‘fear’ departs:

  • ਹਮਰਾ ਭਰਮੁ ਗਇਆ ਭਉ ਭਾਗਾ ॥ ਜਬ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਗਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥: Now that my consciousness is attached to the Naam (Wisdom, Virtues, Truth…) ||1||Pause||, my mind’s doubt got dispelled and my fear has fled away. (sggs 655).
: (A person who remains attached to Gur-Charan or Wisdom) from within him doubt is dispelled and his fear flees. (sggs 1061).

In short, the fear is because of one’s own mind’s faults, defects, weakness etc.

Fear only exists in the mind

Fear salts and peppers the unfulfilled desires that create attachment and leads to anger, resentment, jealousy, depression, worry, inability to face critical moments in life, estrangement from Truth or one’s Mool (Source, True Nature or Jot Saroop…).

: (Man) is born in fear and dies in fear; fear always remains in (his) mind. (sggs 149).
  • ਡਰਿ ਡਰਿ ਡਰਣਾ ਮਨ ਕਾ ਸੋਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ : The mind is always in fear and tumult. ||1||Pause|| (sggs 151).
: That person fears who commits Paap (i.e. acts against Hukam), while the one who lives by Dharma rejoices (inner blooming). (sggs 84).

The Gurbani tells us that the doubt-ridden mind is full of all sorts of fears the fear of the unknown or unexpected; the fear of desires, life, death, insult, loss, damage, injury, harm, old age, pain, accident, poverty, unfavorable or undesirable results or situations or circumstances, and so on.

According to the Gurbani, the biggest escape from fear is abidance in our True nature (Jot Saroop), Hukam, Wisdom, Virtues…

: Those who are imbued with the love of the divine Naam are NOT burdened by doubt. (sggs 23).
: By the Grace of the Gur-Giyan or Wisdom, doubt is dispelled. (sggs 294).
  • ਹੁਕਮੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਤ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਹੋਇ ਵਣਾਹੰਬੈ ॥੨॥ : If a person realizes the Hukam (System-Rule-Law of Nature), then he becomes fearless. ||2|| (sggs 1104).

As the depth of love for one’s Mool increases, the intensity of fear related anxiety and mental disorder decreases

  • ਏਕ ਆਸ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਰਖਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੂਖੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਭਉ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥ : Nanak, only keep the Creator’s hope in mind., (this way) pain, doubt and fear depart. ||1|| (sggs 281).

As emphasized in the Gurbani, the goal is to achieve the consciousness of fearlessness (‘

Absence of fear is absence of pretending.

Absence of pretending means nonattendance of false self or egotism (Haumai). In the nonattendance of false ego-sense (Haumai), there is no appearance of fear.

: (The Gurmukh) rids himself of doubt of Haumai Maya from within. (sggs 1059).
: The mind becomes pure when ego is killed (sggs 1049).
: False-ego-sense (Haumai) is opposed to the divine Naam; both cannot coexist in the mind. (sggs 560).

In short, if fear is a state of mind, all we need to do is don’t allow fear enter mind. Hence, if fear is denied entry into our minds, then we cannot be overpowered by negativity expressed as stress, anxiety, depression, rage, addictions, promiscuity, troubled social relationships, burden of the past, worries about the future, etc.

In a nutshell, in order to overcome fears, annihilation of doubts (Bharam-ਭਰਮ) is must.

: Those who always remember the Fearless (Rabb, Creator…); all their fear is removed. (sggs 11).
: Whosoever frightens none nor is afraid of (threats of) anyone; says Nanak, listen, O mind! Call that person a Giaynee (a Wise person, spiritually Enlightened). (sggs 1427).

Gain understanding not fear

The Gurbani is the Way of understanding; and understanding of the Guru Shabad dispels both doubt and fear.

: Whosoever realizes the Fearless Creator all his fear vanishes. (sggs 293).
  • ਸਿਮਰਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਭੈ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਰੀਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ : Become free from fear by remember the Naam (Giyan-Wisdom / Virtues…). ||1||Pause|| (sggs 190).

Thus, the Gurmat Wisdom of the SGGS assures us that both doubt and fear can be overcome by the Grace of the Guru‘s Giyan-Wisdom:

  • ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਭਰਮ ਭਉ ਭਾਗੈ ॥ : Through the Gur-Shabad, doubt and fear are dispelled. (sggs 1070).
: (With the grace of Gur-Giyan or Wisdom) my mind is Enlightened and (as a result, now) the eggshell of doubt (Bharam, delusion) has been broken. The Breaking of the Eggshell was the Liberation of my Shackled (Mind). My Cycle of spiritual birth and death (Aavan Jaan-ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣੁ) has Ended. The Flames (of doubt) Are Extinguished with the Guru‘s spiritually cooling Naam (Eternal Giyan–Wisdom / Virtues). ||1||Pause|| (sggs 1002).

In other words, only the storm of Wisdom or the explosion of Wisdom (‘ਗੋਲਾ ਗਿਆਨੁ’) can lift the doubt-ridden mind into its Mool , destroying the fortress of doubt (Bharam-ਭਰਮ), ignorance, superstitions, confusion, wordily temptations and their corrupting influences etc.

: O brother, the storm of Spiritual Wisdom or Enlightenment has struck my mind. (This storm of Wisdom) has blown away my mind’s Bharam (doubts, confusion, superstition etc.) and bonds of Maya like the thatched walls of my hut. ||1||pause|| The pillar of my double-mindedness and the beam of my emotional bonds of the hut has come crashing down. The thatched roof of worldly desires (supported on the beam of attachment) has fallen to the ground and the pitcher of evil intellect has broken. ||1|| (sggs 331).

Fear flees upon Realizing Truth

Truth makes one fearless and gives strength and meaning to existence. Hence, the Gurbani says Truth (‘ਸਚੁ’-Sach, Creator, Virtues) is the ‘Khasam‘ of all (Master, Husband, ਮਾਲਕ…).

: This Truth is the Master of all; blessed ‘Janu’ (Gurmukh, Daas, Bhagat …) obtains it (sggs 922).
: O mind! Fear departs by realizing Truth (sggs 18).
  • ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਭਰਮੁ ਗਇਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਛਾਨਾ ॥੬॥ : (One) whose doubt is dispelled, knows the Truth. ||6|| (sggs 330).

The Gurbani asserts when doubt (Bharam-ਭਰਮ) and fear are overcome, Truth and Bliss (Anand) remain.

: (My) doubt has been eliminated, and Supreme Bliss has remained behind. ||3||20|| (sggs327).
: Eternal Sukh (ਸੁਖ-Happiness, Peace, Joy…) is attained when doubts are dispelled. (sggs 114).

Thus, the understanding of the Gurbani (ਸੂਝ-ਬੂਝ, Giyan, Bibek…) leads us to realize the state of fearlessness (‘ਨਿਰਭੈ ਪਦੁ’). In other words, one who knows Truth of his Mool gains fearlessness, Joy, Bliss, Peace ..:

  • ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਹ ਭਜਨ ਤੇ ਨਿਰਭੈ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੨॥੧॥ : ||1|| Nanak, by uniting the Creator within, the state of fearlessness is achieved. ||2||1|| (sggs 726).

Clearly, the battle (ਜੰਗ) is within the mind. When this battle with the mind is won, the outside battle stands won — ‘ਮਨਿ ਜੀਤੈ ਜਗੁ ਜੀਤੁ , conquer the mind, conquer the world!

‘Pure Fear’ – revered fear

Although the Wisdom of the SGGS makes us fearless, courageous, brave, etc. nevertheless, the SGGS asks us to keep the ‘Pure Fear’ (‘ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਭਉ’) of the One (Hukam: Universal System-Rule-Law of Nature) in the mind live in harmony with the Omnipresent Hukam. We all hear these verses during a wedding ceremony:

  • ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਭਉ ਪਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਰਾਮੁ ਹਦੂਰੇ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮੁ ਪਸਾਰਿਆ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਸਰਬ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰੇ ॥ : In the Pure or revered Fear of the Divine (Universal Energy, Hukam), live daily life of Virtues and behold the Divine Presence within you. (Then the soul-bride gets the conviction that) the Divine is the fully pervading and permeating everywhere and in everyone. (sggs 774).

In other words, when our mind is filled with the Pure or revered Fear of the One Creator and the reverence, love or respect of the Cosmic Hukam (Universal System-Rule-Law of Nature), worldly fears flee. The Gurbani of the SGGS confirms this as follows:

: DADDA (a letter of the Gurmukhi alphabet): When the revered Fear of the Creator wells in the mind, then the worldly fear departs. Thus the Worldly fear is absorbed into revered Fear. But when anyone does not have the revered Fear of the Creator, then the worldly fear again clings to him. By keeping the Creator’s revered Fear in the mind, one becomes fearless, then the worldly fear of his mind run away. ||19|| (sggs 341).

Pure Fear of the One does not mean to be afraid of the Creator or Hukam. It simply implies to be watchful of the adverse or negative impact of vices/Bikaar; to be fearful of untruthful and unvirtuous lifestyle; to be fearful of low moral standards and bad actions; to be mindful of performing one’s duty responsibly, to be alert from deception and fraud; etc. In essence, it is the fear of immoral, false and unrighteous conduct.

In a nutshell, ‘Pure Fear’ is to be careful, aware, heedful, vigilant, cautious in life (ਸਾਵਧਾਨ), and live in harmony with the Hukam. Thus, in deeper sense, it is meant to discourage ambivalence.

The Gurbani being the mirror of the mind, it addresses the human mind. The Wisdom of the Gurbani Awakens the mind to recognize its True Nature within (Jot Saroop).

: (He who remembers Naam, all his) fear and doubt are destroyed in melancholy, the darkness (of ignorance) within him is removed and the light (of Wisdom within the mind) dawns. (sggs 825).

Manmukhs are fearful and Gurmukhs are fearless

Gurmat or the Spirituality of the Shabad (SGGS) is for HERE AND NOW, NOT AFTERLIFE. Gurmat debunks the concocted narrative of after death liberation (mukti)! The Gurbani asserts our reading of the Gurbani is ritualistic. The day we start reading the Gurbani with REFLECTION (Shabad-Vichaar), Bharam, doubt, confusion, illusion, superstitions etc. will flee the mind.

Having said that, the Gurbani also teaches us who is likely to be fearful in life and who is likely to be fearless in life, Here and Now, NOT after death!

In short, according to the Gurbani, a Manmukh (Unenlightened being) is always full of fears, and the one who has become a Gurmukh (Enlightened or Guru Shabad-Oriented) is fearless in life! Thus, a Manmukh is the opposite of a Gurmukh.

: The pitiable Manmukhs (Unenlightened) are ruined through fear and dread. (sggs 677).
  • ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭ੍ਰਮ ਭੈ ਮੋਹ ਮਿਟਾਇਆ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇਹ ਪਰਮ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੪੦॥: By becoming the Gurmukh, who have effaced their doubt, fear and worldly attachment, O Nanak! they realize the supreme Sukh (Bliss…). ||40|| (sggs 258).

    This is exactly what Gurbani tells us to do – ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਬਾਰ ਬਾਰ ਇਹ ਹੀ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਕਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ !!
    Thanks!

  5. your very thanks to guide me like that.mn aj to bani nu paran di jagah samjhan di koshish karanga.

  6. Brother, this is all VAHAM (false notion, doubt) and ANDH-VISHVAAS (blind belief)!!

    In fact, man himself is the biggest ‘Bhoot’!!

    According to the Gurbani ‘Bhoot’ is the person who is connected to Maya or Bikaar (lust, etc.) and disconnected from Truth (ਸੱਚ), or separated from Naam (Shabad, Hukam, Brahm-Giaan, Divine Wisdom…), or broken away from his Mool (Source, Jot, Hari, Saadh, Raam, Gobind, Prabh, Allah…)!!

    This is the Gurbani’s edict (ਫੈਸਲਾ).
(sggs 1374).
(sggs 706).
(sggs 513).
(sggs 1131).

    Therefore, brother, let’s:
    • Try reading the Gurbani Ourselves (not by hired Bhais, etc.).
    • Try understanding the Gurbani through the Gurbani (Through Shabad Vichaar — NOT through the fool-o-sophy, Brahminical concepts…).
    • Try living it in daily life.

    Then ‘Bhoot’ from within will fold its tent and disappear, never to come back!!

    Thank you for taking the time to respond to this post! Welcome to the Gurbani Blog!

  8. Once you bind in PDF format of the book, you can still edit whenever you wish to. You can change the book every day if you like to. But that way more readers will access it.

  9. I feel that the words ਭਉ and ਭੈ need more close understanding for their respective reference meanings.
    It can be observed from within Gurbaanee that the word ਭਉ is OPPOSITE of the word Bhaau in Gurbani.The meaning of the word BHAAu is LOVE/AFFECTION with devotion from within heart.Thus the meaning of the word ਭਉ can be considered to be DETEST/LOATHE
    The meaning of the word ਭੈ is always as FEAR.
    I stand rectified on these considerations which I find very important for getting the true essence of Gurbani understanding .

  10. Pl indicate Ang number in SGGS ji for the Quote

  13. Another probable interpretation of the Quote• ਸੁਅਸਤਿ ਆਥਿ ਬਾਣੀ ਬਰਮਾਉ ॥: Suasati aathi baanee baramaaou (sggs 4). may be understood as under….
    The word ਸੁਅਸਤਿ means Acclaim or Applaud as interjective and
    The word ਆਥਿ is transitive of the word AATH means MAAYAA.
    Thus the interpretation of the Quote is that within MAAYAA the Acclaim /Applaud is to the BAANEE of BRAHMu

  14. Thank you Bhai Sahib Jio for taking the time to comment.

    Regarding your inquiry, let’s take the first verse (one thing at a time):
    • ਸੁਅਸਤਿ ਆਥਿ ਬਾਣੀ ਬਰਮਾਉ ॥: Suasati aathi baanee baramaaou (sggs 4).

    Fist, according to the Gurbani, what’s the biggest disease we human beings are afflicted with?

    According to the Gurbani, that disease is called Haumai (false ego-sense…):
    • ਹਉਮੈ ਰੋਗੁ ਵਡਾ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥: Haumai rogu vdaa sansaari (sggs 1278).

    The Gurbani time and again reminds us that – until we become free of this terrible disease (“ਸੁਅਸਤਿ”-Wholesome, Healthy, ਅਰੋਗ…) – we can have NO spiritual understanding/apprehension/enlightenment/realization:
    • ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੇ ਤਾ ਦਰੁ ਸੂਝੈ ॥੨॥: Haoumai maaray taa daru soojhai (sggs 842).
: Haumai boojhai taa daru soojhai (sggs 466).

    Now, the question is: How can we become free of this free of this disease (“ਸੁਅਸਤਿ”-Wholesome, Healthy…)?

    In other words, what is it that’s capable of freeing us from this disease?

    It is the Gurbani!!

    Contained in this Brahm Baanee (“ਬਾਣੀ ਬਰਮਾਉ”) is the Aatm-Giaan (the Divine Knowledge, Spiritual Wisdom), which is not perishable (ਜੋ ਕਿ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਨਹੀ).

    This Brahm Baanee (“ਬਾਣੀ ਬਰਮਾਉ”), which has come from Parmeshar, is like very precious and effective medicine (ਦਵਾਈ) to make us free of this terrible disease of Haumai.

    As a result, it’s very beautiful to the mind; for this Brahm Baanee (“ਬਾਣੀ ਬਰਮਾਉ”) gives the mind an Eternal Life (ਸਦ ਜੀਵਨ). For this reason, the mind develops enthusiasm (love, affection, eagerness, etc.) for gaining more and more Wisdom.
: Sati uhaanu sadaa mani chaaou (sggs 4).

  15. please help me to understand

  16. From Gurbaanee messages one can see and understand the basic root cause of ਭਉ and ਭੈ
    is ਭਰਮ and once this is eliminated there will be no place for ਭਉ and ਭੈ to have any
    influence in ones life.
    The treatment for removal of ਭਰਮ can be undersood from a Quote from Gurbaanee as
    “HAMRAA BHARAM GAYAA BHAU BHAGAA JUB RAAM NAAMu CHITu LAAGAA”…
    SGGS ji.

  17. Yes Bhai Sahib Ji.

    Thank you Bhai Sahib ji for taking the time to comment.

  18. Yes Bhai Sahib Jio – by assimilating the Fearless (Mool, Source…), or by obtaining the Divine Understanding (ਸੂਝ-ਬੂਝ) through the Shabad-Vichaar and living it in daily life (the Gurmukh Lifestyle), all fear cease to exist.
    • ਸਬਦਿ ਸਲਾਹੀ ਸਦਾ ਹਉ ਜੀਵਾ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਭਉ ਭਾਗਾ ॥: (I) praise (the “Mool, Source…”) through Shabad (Shabad-Vichaar), and, continually live (Divine Life, Gurmukh Lifestyle…). Hence, by the Gurmat (Aatam-Giaan or the Divine Teaching of the Gurbani), my fear runs away. (sggs 600).
    • ਨਾਨਕ ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਕੋ ਨਹੀ ਜਿਚਰੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਨ ਕਰੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੧॥: O Nanak! Without Naam, no one becomes fearless – until (one) engages in Shabad (i.e., Shabad-Vichaar). ||1|| (sggs 588).
    • ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਭਰਮ ਭਉ ਭਾਗੈ ॥: Gur kai sabadi bharam bhaou bhaagaa (sggs 686).
    • ਸੋ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥: So nirbhaou gur sabadi paachhaaanai (sggs 1042).
    • ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭ੍ਰਮ ਭੈ ਮੋਹ ਮਿਟਾਇਆ ॥: Gurmukhi bhram bhai moh mitaaiaa (sggs 258).
    The Gurbani is full of many more related verses, but all cannot be given from a space point of view.
    Thank you Bhai Sahib Jio for taking the time and sharing.

    1. ਨਿਰਭਉ ਜਪੈ (Waheguru Jaap/Simran)., and
    2. ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਿਰਪਾ (Gurparsad/Kirpa/Grace/Nadr/Bakshish of Waheguru).

    ਨਿਰਭਉ ਜਪੈ ਸਗਲ ਭਉ ਮਿਟੈ ॥ (Raag Gauri M. 5, GGS. 293-8).
    Nirabho Japai Sagal Bho Mittai ||
    Meditating on the Fearless Lord, all fear departs.

    ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਛੁਟੈ ॥
