Bhagats and Worldly People Cannot be in Alliance

Gurbani is the mirror of of our mind. It shows our mind its real nature, Soch (thinking), attention, tendency, habit, quality, temperament, character etc.

NOT at the physicals level but at the level of the mind, Bhagats (i.e. Gurmukhs, Daas, Jan…) and the worldly people (i.e. Manmukhs-Saakat-Mayadhaaree are of the opposite nature. Their mental dispositions are incompatible.

In short, a Bhagat (Gurmukh, Daas, Jan…) is that person who understands the Hukam (System-Rule-Law of Nature) and follows the Hukam. To the contrary, a worldly person is opposite of the Bhagat.

Accordingly, the Sri Guru Granth Sahib (SGGS) teaches us that — at the level of the mind — between Bhagats and the worldly people there can never be any true alliance (connection, union, link, association, etc.) for their mental dispositions are incompatible.

: There can never be true alliance or connection (of nature, thinking, habits etc.) between the Bhagats (Gurmukh, Daas, Jan etc.) and the worldly people. (sggs 145).
: The Divine’s Daas (Bhagat, Gurmukh, Jan etc.) does not associate with the Saakat (worldly person etc.). (Why? Because) One is in the clutches of sensuousness (ਵਿਸ਼ਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ), while the other is in love with Raam‘ (Source, Mool, True Nature, Jot Saroop…). ||1||Pause|| (sggs 198).
: According to the True Justice (of Hukam: System-Rule-Law of Nature…), a Manmukh who fights or conflicts with the Gurmukh sinks (in the ocean of the worldliness – ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ – i.e., the boat of his life sinks in the waves of Bikaars) (sggs 148).

To impart Wisdom to us, the Gurbani inquires as to who is a worldly and who is a Bhagat?

  • ਕਵਨੁ ਸੈਸਾਰੀ ਕਵਨੁ ਸੁ ਭਗਤਾ ॥ ਕਵਨ ਸੁ ਦਾਨਾ ਕਵਨੁ ਸੁ ਹੋਛਾ ਕਵਨ ਸੁ ਸੁਰਤਾ ਕਵਨੁ ਜੜਾ ॥੬॥ Who is worldly, and who is a Bhagat? Who is wise, and who is shallow? Who is aware, and who is ignorant? ||6|| (sggs 1081).

In the next breath, the Gurbani answers as follows:

  • ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸੈਸਾਰੀ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਭਗਤਾ ॥ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਹੋਛਾ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਦਾਨਾ ਦੂਜਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਅਵਰੁ ਧੜਾ ॥੭॥: In Hukam (System-Rule-Law of Nature), one is worldly, and one is Bhagat. In Hukam, one is shallow, and one is wise. There is no other side except Hukam. ||7|| (sggs 1081).

The Gurmat Wisdom of the SGGS teaches us to become Bhagat (Gurmukh, Daas, Jan…).

: True Bhagti consists of love for the Gur-Shabad (i.e., life of the Shabad-Giaan, Wisdom, Upadesh, Virtues…). (sggs 158).
