Mool –

Mool (ਮੂਲ) can be translated as root, original, inaugural, basic or
foundational. The Sri Guru Granth Sahib (SGGS) reveals to us that the Mool or Original Nature of our mind is Jot Sroop.

: This is what Nanak says: O my mind, you are the ‘Jot Saroop’ or embodiment of Light (God)! Recognize your Mool (ORIGIN, Source…) ||5|| (sggs 441).

The SGGS repeatedly reminds us the very purpose of human birth — Recognizing or Understanding the mind’s Original Nature (ਅਪਣੇ ਅਸਲੀ ਸਰੂਪ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣ ਲੈਣਾਂ), and thus become One with the Mool within (ਮੂਲ : Source, Jot Saroop), Here and Now, not afterlife or after death. Thus in totality, Mool is the most important!

: (Man) is born in this life only to become ONE (with Prabh, Mool, etc. – through Naam…). (But) ever since (man’s) birth, (he) has been enticed and deceived by Maya. (sggs 251).

Once we become One with our Mool within (i.e. become Saabat Soorat-ਸਾਬਤ ਸੂਰਤਿ, recognition of ownself etc.), then we become One with everything else.

In a nutshell, the mind’s Mool is the Untainted Conscience, while our Mayaic or ego-impacted mind is our outer or material consciousness (perplexed, Bikaaree…).

The Gurbani teaches all humans that without being united (linked) with one’s Mool within, the mind will not be truly satisfied (contented-ਸਤ ਸੰਤੋਖੀ, killed or annihilated, frozen or conquered…).

If not connected to its Mool (Jot Saroop) within, the mind will certainly remain connected to Maya outside (Bhav Saagar, duality (Doojaa-Bhaav, Dubidhaa, two-ness). This is the edict (ਫੈਸਲਾ) of the universal Wisdom the SGGS:

  • ਮਮਾ ਮੂਲ ਗਹਿਆ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨੈ ॥: MAMAA: Clinging to the Mool, the mind is satisfied (ਮੰਨੇ, ਸਮਝੇ, comply…). (sggs 342).
: Abandoning the Mool, (Mayaic Jeev) become attached to the love of duality. (sggs 232).
: (The false ones) do not understand their Mool, they are not pleased (satisfied or gratified) with the Truth, and so they wander in duality and doubt. ||3|| (sggs 1024).
: Their clothes are white (beautiful religious robes) but their conscience is cruel and filthy (full of vices — they look holy or Mahaatamaa on the outside only). Their minds don’t acquire  Naam (Giaan-Wisdom, Virtues…); engrossed in duality they cheat people (i.e. their external appearance is only pretense-Pakhand to cheat people). They do not Understand their own Mool (Source, Jot Saroop…); that’s why they are fools with animal intelligence ||3|| (sggs 751).

Question: If Jot Sroop is the mind’s Original Nature, then what did shatter it? In other words, what did go wrong?

Simply put: it is the rise of Mayaic Budhi or false ego-sense (Haumai), doubts etc., that create havoc in the forest of the body – the birth of man’s all troubles.

On account of duality, doubts (Bharam), false intellect (ਝੂਠੀ ਮਤ) etc., Haumai, our psychological or mental conditioning veils the mind’s Original Nature. As a result, one thinks himself either ‘other’ than his Mool, or separate from it.

This is the notion of two-ness (ਦੁਬਿਧਾ-Dubidhaa…). Thus, duality is nothing but our love (Bhaav) of two-ness (Doojaa…).

To put it otherwise, by associating with duality one looses spiritual Understanding. This loosening of Divine Understanding gives rise to forgetfulness, ignorance, or obliviousness of one’s Mool so much talked about in the SGGS.

As a result, the mind miss out the opportunity to Realize its Original Nature as Jot Saroop. It is Maya with its dualistic principle of delusion or the law of opposites that deludes us from our very birth.

: Seeing the nine openings of the body, the soul-bride (ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ, Jeev) is led astray, and does not attain the Incomparable Substance (peerless, unequal, unique, or Real Thing within – Mool, ਜੋਤ-ਰੂਪ…). (sggs 339).

As a result – although our Mool within is our Mooring – but we have lost that Mooring, and consequently have gone astray. In other words, it’s one’s Manmukh or Saakat or Mayadhaaree state of the mind responsible for losing connection with the Mool within.

: The Manmukh (self-willed…) forget the Mool; for they are caught in greed, avarice, and pride (i.e., Bikaar). (sggs 316).
  • ਮੂਲੁ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ਆਪੁ ਨ ਸੂਝੈ ਭਰਮਿ ਬਿਆਪੀ ਅਹੰ ਮਨੀ ॥੧॥: Engrossed in doubt and egotism, (The mortal does) not know the Mool; he does not understand his ownself. ||1|| (sggs 1186).
: O devoid of all virtues – ਗੁਣ-ਹੀਨ, Saakat – recognize your own Mool! (sggs 63).

The Gurbani says we all can still regain our link with our Original Mooring (Mool) while still living in the midst of the happenings of the world (Maya). But, that requires making our Mann (ਮਨ), Chit (ਚਿਤ), and Hukam as One — Gurmukh Mindset Enlightened State of the mind.

: Triteeaa (Third…), one who maintains his equilibrium (Aatmac Adolataa-ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ) amidst the three modes (of Maya – making Mann, Chit, and Hukam as One…), realize the Mool, and the Param Pada (the Supreme State of becoming One with the Shabad within, ਉੱਚੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ…). (sggs 343).
: The seed sprouts only if the seed is whole (undivided, Saabat-ਸਾਬਤ…) and if the season is proper (similarly, the Naam-seed sprouts within only if the mind and Consciousness – ਮੱਨ ਅਤੇ ਚਿੱਤ – are one: whole, complete, unfragmented, total, Saabat-ਸਾਬਤ…). (sggs 468).

The Gurbani is the Way of understanding. For one to link with his Mool within, the Gurbani says that he needs to become Enlightened. Because, the Gurbani asserts only by becoming the Enlightened (Gurmukh Mindset) one can come out of the egg of doubt and eliminate the negative impact of the false ego-sense (Haumai) and become established in Sahaj Avasthaa (Natural State of Being, Enlightened state).

: Internalization of the spiritual Message of the Shabad (the Gurmukh-Hood State of Mind) enables its Essence to be Rooted (Mool) within the mind permanently. (sggs 945).

A Manmukh-Saakat-Mayadhaaree mind only knows how to get trapped in Bhav Saagar. But, the Gurmukh is opposite of the Manmukh.

The Gurbani instructs that when the Surat (ਸੁਰਤ, conscience) gets absorbed in its Mool from which it was born, then the fear of death, Mayaic thoughts etc. do not come near it (i.e. becomes Free from repeated suffering).

: (Those who) understand their own Mool dwell within the Home of their Inner Being (Nij Ghar) in Peace and Sahaj (Natural State of Being, ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ, ਗਿਆਨ ਅਵਸਤਾ…). (sggs 1334)
: (One who assays his ownself…) Speaks with those (ਆਪਣੇ ਸੁਭਾਉ ਵਾਲੇ, who have similar inclinations…) who know the Mool. (sggs 148).

The Gurbani (SGGS) is meant to be read / listened by oneself, its true meanings understood through Shabad-Vichaar, and its Enlightening Message internalized and applied to one’s day-to-day living.

Merely keeping the Gurbani wrapped in fancy fabric and worshiping it like an idol as seen propagated by the self serving Pujaaree (clergy: Granthis, Parcharaks, Ragis, Dhadees etc.) and the freeloading Deraa-Vaad Baabaas (ਵੇਹਲੜ) and their religious Pakhand will not do the trick — Mool Realization cannot be made to an order or given to somebody as a mundane gift! This is the Gurbani’s edict.

According to the SGGS, the key is one has to mend the mind through the Gurmat Wisdom — reform the mind, bring about positive change in thinking.

  • ਆਪੁ ਸਵਾਰਹਿ ਮੈ ਮਿਲਹਿ ਮੈ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥ ਫਰੀਦਾ ਜੇ ਤੂ ਮੇਰਾ ਹੋਇ ਰਹਹਿ ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੋਇ ॥੯੫॥: If you REFORM yourself then you will Realize Me (i.e. God), and when you Realize Me (i.e. God), you will rejoice in Spiritual Bliss. O Farid, (reforming yourself) if you become Mine then the entire world would become yours. ||95|| (sggs 1382).

In other words, mere robotic, mechanical, or ritualistic reading (for the sake of making money etc.) and hearing of the Gurbani without living it and without understanding the Mool with the help of its Divine Knowledge would be unavailing.

: Fools read in duality, (as a result, they) do not recognize their Mool; (thus, they) waste their lives uselessly. (sggs 1133).
: Listening to the Gurmat (Shabad-Giaan, Teaching of the Gurbani, etc.), (if) no Spiritual Wisdom (understanding of the Spiritual Life…) wells up within; (then it would be) like a beast (routinely) filling its belly (sggs 685).

One of the examples used in the Gurbani is that of ‘ladles‘ (ਕੜਛੀਆ). Although ladles cruise through all sorts of food, but they do not know the relish of that food – they just remain empty of it!

: Ladles cruise through food, (but) they do not know the taste of the food. (Similarly, Nanak, only they enjoyed the (Ruhani or spiritual taste) who are tinged with the taste of the Divine Love (rest of us remain like ‘ladles’). ||1|| (sggs 521).

  2. Thank you Mohan Singh Ji for taking the time to read the post and respond. Welcome to the Gurbani Blog.

    The SGGS asserts:
(sggs 251).

Veer ji my question What led jeeva to separate from it’s mool at first place when it was already one with its mool, was it without gyaan then? And if it lacked gyaan in that state how do we consider it was one still in merger with its mool. It is confusing me when it was pure and one with its mool, did it separate by itself from its mool or it is Mool (akaal purakh, kartar Who separated from Him). If it so, why some are close to Akaal purakh and pure and some completely illusion in the false trap of maya. At what point the difference between human perceptions arose? Why some are low and some high (on this spiritual journey)?Does jeeva have tendency of reseparation from its mool once it has achieved complete merger with it’s mool?
If reseparation is a possibility then what is, the significance of gurupdesh
” ik til nahi bhanne ghaale”
Please enlighten me if possible in detail.
Many thanks for your great service.

  4. This is a very good article. Mool can either mean source or beginning. Therefore, our spiritual pursuit in life is to allow our consciousness to merge back with our source (mool). Our innate origin is from Waheguru who resides in Sun avastha / sehaj avastha. As such, we have to invest immense effort to retract our consciousness with Guru’s kirpa by only taking the support of the Shabad. Please do read Astpadee 20 of Sukhmani on the dimension when God is all by Himself (Origin/Source). Upon contemplating that Astpadee, we will realize that the dimension (Where God resides) is free from no emotional attachments ,no doubts, immaculate, no anxiety, no worries and no worldly thoughts. That is the Mool which we have to strive to obtain with the Guru’s grace.

Please forgive me for wrong the interpretation. I seek forgiveness from the Guru and the Sangat.

  5. from my small understandings: our mool developed bharam (doubt) causing it to be split from One, from there on the aatma further split to mann/maya.
why we actually developed bharam in first place not sure, don’t feel we need to know either. but in doubt we felt a difference/separation.

bharam – results in hau / seperation
mann – results in mai / mamta/ individuality

would love to hear further thoughts on this and be corrected where wrong

  7. Veer ji, may be I am not able to articulate my question —it is related to your question that you posed above and let me repeat: “Question: If Jot Sroop (embodiment of the Divine Light…) is man’s Real Nature, what did shatter it? In other words, what did go wrong?”

You have very nicely explained with gurubani support that it is Maya that has shattered us and we have separated from our Mool. My question is very DIFFERENT. Why did we leave the Mool at the first place and and landed in Maya.

Once we are in Maya, everything you have stated in your above replies and in the post apply. But my question is ( and let me repeat): Why did we leave the Mool at the first place and and landed in Maya?

Please note it is very constructive dialogue and it is with this intention I am raising this question. Any insight please? Guru Fetah!

(sggs 251).
(sggs 258).
(sggs 1366).

  9. Oh, I did not make it clear; I think we were “shattered” before we came into this world. If not “shattered” then must be something to that effect otherwise why we would have left “Eka” – Oneness – Union with the Mool.

Mayic Budhi, duality, haumai etc all came later and could not have “shattered” something that is already “shattered” — may be some further shattering — that’s all! The foundational question remains unanswered – why we shattered at the first place and landed in Maya. Guru Fetah ji

  10. Thank you Bhai Sahib Paramjit Singh Rana Ji for taking the time to share your thoughts.

The Gurbani is the esoteric knowledge recorded for the purpose of reflection, contemplation, and application (to live Gurmukh Lifestyle) — (1) to break the false identity, (2) and to realize the True Identity (Jot Saroop, Mool)!

In addition to Mann, Hirda, Chit and Surat, the Gurbani also use other terms such as “Cave” of the heart,”Feet” within the heart, and so on. These are not physiological organs, but mystical or esoteric terms and expressions common to Indian religions or traditions. Guru Sahibs and Bhagat also used them.

As far as Maya goes, the Pujaaree Group generally suggests it to mean money.

However, in the eyes of the Gurbani, ANYTHING that takes one away from his/her Mool becomes Maya!!! This could be money, power, family, wife, husband, children, possessions, status, titles, Jaat-Paat….

Here is the Gurbani’s edict (ਫੈਸਲਾ). As indicated in the following verse of the Gurbani, the Maya is that Cosmic Illusion which makes us (1) forget our Mool (“Hari Visrai“); (2) gives rise to emotional attachment (“Moh Upjai”); and (3) creates duality (“Bhaau Doojaa“).
: Eh Maya Jitu hari visarai mohu aouajai bhaou doojaa laya (sggs 921).

  11. Veer Ji:
Very interesting and very informative. Thank you Veer ji for putting it together and sharing it. A few questions popped up as I had a quick read, can you please reflect on these based on the profound knowledge and insight that you have:

As you stated “Question: If Jot Sroop (embodiment of the Divine Light…) is man’s Real Nature, what did shatter it? In other words, what did go wrong?”. After posing this question, you very nicely proceeded to list maya, duality etc are the reasons for this separate identity. But all this takes place after we are born into this world of Maya and get attuned to worldly attachments that cause this “shatter”. However, it does not answer the foundational question – why did we land in the Maya at the first place? The duality and worldly factors that you list come into effect afterwards!!!

Then you have ( as many other writers do ) used terms without providing clear ( to the extent possible) understanding to allow fuller understanding of your excellent exposition. Words like Mann (?), Chit ( your referred to it as consciousness), Hirda (?), Surat ( focus – you alluded to it as consciousness again). How does Mann differ from Hirda? How do Chit and Surat differ?

Guru Fetah Ji and look forward to your insight for my understanding please.

  12. Not one name but many names have been used for “Mool” in the Gurbani — Raam, Hari, Gobind, Gopal, Prabh, Allah, and so on.

Thank you Veer Ji for taking the time to respond!

  13. In my opinion “THE MOOL” as envisaged in gurbaanee is SATTiNAAMu itself.

  14. Veer ji means our mind when free from every evil thought… When inner and outer is one… And all its question end… Then it realises the mool?

  15. Many Thanks Veer Tejinder Singh Ji for taking the time to respond!
    Welcome to the Gurbani Blog!

Mool is mind’s Base, substratum, Jot-Saroop, Pure Awareness, True Nature, Untainted Consciousness, …

  16. Veer ji,
After reading ur article. One question arise in my mind. That is… What is mool? We can connect to it through guru. Bt mind always ask what mool you are seeking for? Whats that mool gives for? As veer ji…human mind is always seek for the destiny which it can feel and see through its surat (focus). As only gursikh one can help me with my doubt. As vairagya arise, when we see ultimate mool is very important above all and our mind questions get end… What is that mool? contact – 9999215489

  17. Yes, it’s all is within according to the SGGS.
We all are seekers (learners, ਸਿਖਿਆਰਤੀ…), learning along with each other!
    Thank you Chitranjan Ji!

  18. SSA, I think here Guruji referring Mool to be a Ananad/ Blissful state…. Sehaj Avastha can only b realised through love for God… Guruji teaches that God is within you… I am a seeker…

  19. Old[previous] scripts have clear Gurmukhi alphabets, in the instant casem there are verticle rectangles at those places where there should be spaces. How do I get rid of these to have a clear reading. Other than this, I pay my very very respectful thanks to yourself, and I sincerely pray that God bestows His benedictions on you in an abundant measure so that you continue guiding immortals like me. Am fully [100%] receptive to your thought process, understanding but need to know where you yourself are now. Thanks and regards once again. Bikar

  20. Baba ..

“The Gurbani tells us that the very purpose of this human birth is to Recognize or Understand our True Nature”

Whole lifetimes fit within those quotes for all but a true bakti ..

Maya is a vast ocean .. and She reliquishes not, to all but the rarest of the rare.
Were describing that distant and lofty Goal Which is closer than the very self be a matter of description the whole of creation would disappear into bursts of Light without number as sparks returning to the flame.

Unless you are calling down fire and lighting, now, do as much physical service in universal love as possible.

An abundance of understanding never liberated anyone. service in love surrender in love and sacrifice in love + time invariably produces the Divine Spark which all wise men seek

  21. Thank you Dharmendra Ji for taking time to share your Vichaar.
The Gurbani indicates Bhagti is to recieve the Gur-Giaan (Gurmat…):
    • ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਤੂੰ ਲੇਹਿ ਇਆਨੇ ॥ ਭਗਤਿ ਬਿਨਾ ਬਹੁ ਡੂਬੇ ਸਿਆਨੇ ॥: Gur kee mati toon lehi iaane. Bhagti binaa bahu doobe siaane (sggs 288).

The Gurbani indicates its essential to understand one’s true own self to eradicate doubts:
    • ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਆਪਾ ਚੀਨੈ ਮਿਟੈ ਨ ਭ੍ਰਮ ਕੀ ਕਾਈ ॥੨॥੧॥: Jan Nanak binu aapaa cheenai mitai n bhram kee kaaee ||2||1|| (sggs 224).

The Gurbani tells us the excellent “Karanee” (“ਕਰਣੀ” – practice, deed, etc.) is the Shabad-Vichaar:
    • ਊਤਮ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਬਦ ਬੀਚਾਰ ॥: Ootam karanee sabad beechaar (sggs 158).

  22. Kindly,correct-idle to read idol-,in article on MOOL
