THE TRUE WINE

One who) drinks the Lord's Sublime Essence (Naam-Amrit:
ever remains imbued with it
(While) other (Mayaic-ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਰਸ) tastes wear off in an instant. (sggs 377).
<><><><>

As indicated in the Gurbani, the True Wine is none other than the Divine Name (Divine Knowledge, Aatam Giaan...); and the True Intoxication is the Name-consciousness (Shabad-Surti, God-consciousness...). One who drinks this True Wine remains permanently intoxicated and enraptured in Eternal Bliss, while the effect of worldly (Mayaic) intoxicants or tastes wear off in an instant and bring only anxiety.

: The Fear of God is my marijuana (Bhang); my consciousness is the pouch which holds it. I have thus become an intoxicated hermit (sggs 721).
  • ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ਤਿਪਦੇ ੨ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਵਤ ਸਦ ਹੀ ਰਾਤਾ ॥ ਆਨ ਰਸਾ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਤਾ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਕੇ ਮਾਤੇ ਮਨਿ ਸਦਾ ਅਨੰਦ ॥ ਆਨ ਰਸਾ ਮਹਿ ਵਿਆਪੈ ਚਿੰਦ ॥੧॥ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਵੈ ਅਲਮਸਤੁ ਮਤਵਾਰਾ ॥ ਆਨ ਰਸਾ ਸਭਿ ਹੋਛੇ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਕੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਹੀ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਸਾਧੂ ਹਾਟਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥ ਲਾਖ ਕਰੋਰੀ ਮਿਲੈ ਨ ਕੇਹ ॥ ਜਿਸਹਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਤਿਸ ਹੀ ਦੇਹਿ ॥੨॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਚਾਖਿ ਭਏ ਬਿਸਮਾਦੁ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਆਇਆ ਸਾਦੁ ॥ ਈਤ ਊਤ ਕਤ ਛੋਡਿ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੀਧਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਮਾਹਿ ॥੩॥੨੭॥: Aasaa Mahalaa 5 Tipade 2 || Hari arsu peevat sada hee raataa ...: Aasaa Mahalaa 5 Tipade 2. One who) drinks the Lord's Sublime Essence (Naam-Amrit: ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ), ever remains imbued with it (ਸਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ). (While) other (Mayaic-ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਰਸ) tastes wear off in an instant. Intoxicated with God's sublime Essence, the mind is forever in ecstasy. Other (Mayaic) essences bring only anxiety.||1|| One who drinks in God's sublime Essence, is intoxicated and enraptured; all other (Mayaic) essences have no effect.||1|| Pause|| The value of God's sublime Essence cannot be described. God's sublime Essence permeates the homes of the Holy. One may spend thousands and millions, but it cannot be purchased. He alone obtains it, who is so pre-ordained.||2||  Tasting it, Nanak is wonder-struck. Through the Gur (Aatam Giaan...), Nanak has obtained this taste. Here and hereafter, it does not leave him. Nanak is imbued and enraptured with God's subtle Essence ||3||27|| (sggs 377).

Also called "Mahaan Rasa" in the Gurbani, the True Wine of the Divine Name (Aatam Giaan...) is located within the core of one's Inner Being - Mool (Source, Origin...) . In fact, in our Essential Nature (Joti-Svaroop), this is exactly what we all are!

However, due to the deluded state of our mind and intellect (Haume), the majority of us are unable to taste this "Mahaan Rasa" and, instead, waste this rare and precious human birth searching for it in the false Maya. Such Mayaic efforts or Mayaic tastes ruin one's body, mind and intellect. The ramifications is the degradation of the individual Soul.

: Maanas bhariaa aaniaa maanas bhariaa jaai. Jit peetai mati door hoyi baral pavai vich aayi. Apnaa paraayaa na pchhanayee khasmahu dhakke khaayi. Jit peetai khasam visrai dargah milai sjaayi. Jhoothaa madu mool n peechaee je kaa paar vasaai: (sggs 554).
But, on account of our love for Maya (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਭੁੱਖ), instead of the "Hari Ras" (the real wine...), we consume other worldly (Mayaic) "Bhakh Abhakh" like a "mad dog" (ਕੂਕਰੁ ਹਰਕਾਇਆ)!
: Like the mad dog running around in all directions, the greedy person, unaware, consumes everything, Bhakh and Abhakh (sggs 50).
Ironically, the consumption of Mayaic addictive substances is on the rise in almost every society. Their use is glorified to the extent that taking them has become a fashion among people from all walks of life. For some time now, unfortunately, intoxicant taking has reached to the grade-school level. Apparently, it is an easy source of revenue for corrupt officials, criminals, multinational corporations, politicians and political parties.

For example, throughout Punjab, the place of the ten Gurus who told us not to use intoxicants in the first place, the number of liquor houses (Theke) and the amount of related sale and consumption of intoxicants is mind boggling! In fact the flow of liquor in the state is so much that it is now known as the "sixth river" (Punjab meaning the land of "five rivers")! It is like this in spite of the fact that, since the independence of India in 1947, the state of Punjab has been ruled many times by the Akaalee Party (the Sikh religious Party)!! Also, during the celebration of Holaa Mahallaa in Anandpur Sahib, for instance, plenty of Bhang taking goes around at the Deraa of Nihangs! Seems strange; but it is true!

: Slok Mardaanaa 1 || Kali (imagining Mayaic mind...) is the vessel, filled with the wine of lust; the mind is the drinker. Anger is the cup, filled with the worldly attachment; pride is the bartender. Drinking too much in the company of falsehood and greed, (the mind) is ruined. So let good conduct (based on the Gurmat) be your distillery, and let Truth be the molasses you ferment; make the most excellent wine of True (Naam). Make Virtue your bread, cool headedness (ਸੀਤਲ ਸੁਭਾਉ) the ghee and modesty the dish of meat. O Nanak! By becoming a Gurmukh, (this diet) is obtained; by consuming which, all the Bikaar (evil and corruption...) depart ||1|| (sggs 553).
History tells us that if you want to ruin a people, get them addicted to worldly (Mataic) tastes. Because it is much easier to enslave, exploit and manipulate addicts. This how it is. The reason being so is that a societies so addicted fall prey to mental thralldom which leads to moral, intellectual as well as Spiritual emasculation.
: Mardaanaa 1 || The body is the bottle, self-conceit is the wine, and desire is the company of drinking buddies. The glass of the mind’s (Mayaic) longing is filled to overflowing with falsehood; the Messenger of Death is the bartender. Drinking in this wine, O Nanak, one takes on countless Bikaar (evil and corruption...). So make Spiritual Wisdom your molasses, and the Praise of God your bread; let the Lord's fear the dish of meat. O Nanak, this is the true (spiritual) food; let the True Name be your only Support.|| 2 || Make your body the vat, and Self-realization (ਆਪੇ ਦੀ ਪਛਾਣ) the wine, then the Amrit of the Naam will become the stream thereof. Meeting the Satsangat (within), the glass of the (Lord’s) Love is filled with this Amrit (Naam); drinking it in, one’s Bikaar are eradicated ||3|| (sggs 553).
The more society allows addictive substances, the more impetus it gives to cheaters, thieves, rogues, plunderers, criminals, swindlers and larcenists. One who uses intoxicants is also sure to have many other unwanted habits, the chief of which are illicit sex, gambling, and eating of dead animals (meat). Scriptures declare that persons who commit such sinful activities cannot be a Spiritual or a Self-realized person.
  • ਰਸੁ ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰਸੁ ਰੁਪਾ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਰਮਲ ਕੀ ਵਾਸੁ ॥ ਰਸੁ ਘੋੜੇ ਰਸੁ ਸੇਜਾ ਮੰਦਰ ਰਸੁ ਮੀਠਾ ਰਸੁ ਮਾਸੁ ॥ ਏਤੇ ਰਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਕੇ ਕੈ ਘਟਿ ਨਾਮ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥੨॥: (Addiction or slavery of) pleasures of gold, silver, women, the sandalwood fragrance (i.e., perfumes), horses (i.e., modes of transportation), bed, houses, sweet treats, and meat — (addiction to) such pleasures of the human body are so numerous; how can the Naam (Wisdom, Virtues) find its dwelling in the Heart ||2|| (sggs 15)?
On the screens of cinema halls and television sets, as well as in many homes and streets (particularly the western countries), scenes of a drunken, half-naked woman embracing a drunken man are a very common sight. Consequently, promiscuity is visible in so many places, and one must wonder the position of a young child who sees such behavior day in and day out! After incessantly observing all of this, restraining oneself to remain steady in life is very difficult indeed!
: Intoxication, youth, and abundance of material wealth -- under the influence of these three one cannot escape commiting sinful activities. Only God can help escape (Dasam Granth, Chrit 183, 1077).
What is the end result of this madness? Indulgence in the passionate play of intoxicants reduces the user to a physical and mental wreck. Unfortunately, most of the political and social institutions are controlled by such immoral people, creating breakdown of the social fabric. Also, most of the religious places and their institutions are managed and run by the same, causing breakdown of the "True Religion" or Dharma. As a result, the Real Religion is again being replaced by mere rituals and forms, as was the case when Baabaa Nanak came to this world!
: (sggs 662).
: Andhaa aagoo je theeai kiou paadharu jaanai. Aap musai mati hochheeai kiou raahu pachhaanai: If a blind man (blinded by the love of Maya, etc.) is made the leader, how will he know the Way (right Path - ਜੀਵਨ-ਸਫਰ ਦਾ ਸਿੱਧਾ ਰਸਤਾ - etc.). Due to his inadequate understanding (ਹੋਛੀ ਅਕਲ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ, lack of Wisdom, etc.), he himself is being plundered (by Maya, evil inclinations - ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਹੱਥੋਂ - etc.); how will (those who follow such a blind or Mayadhaaree leader - ਉਸ ਦੀ ਅਗਵਾਈ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਵੀ) know the Way? (sggs 767).
Religion means action according to the Hukam (the Divine Law) of the Lord. To the contrary, the irreligion means action that goes against the Hukam. Those who do not believe in the Hukam and act according to their own materialistic whims are called Manmukhs, demons or Asuras in the scriptures.

Thank to the faulty modern education, material development or industrial revolution which is producing plenty of Manmukhs, demons or Asuras everywhere! Inherited in material progress are seemingly unending barrage of psychological stress, tension, and worries; which, ultimately, create breakdowns both physically and mentally. In a futile hope to get relief from these unseen ailments, the man takes refuge in intoxicants designed to wreaking havoc. As a consequent of this, man becomes more abominable in the process.

: Those who eat betel nuts and betel leaf and indulge in any kind of intoxicants; such as smoking and drugs etc., and do not contemplate the Lord, — they will be seized and taken away by the Yama, the Divine Law (sggs 726).
As we know it, sugar is very dangerous for a sick person suffering from diabetes. The disease of the worldly mind can be likened such illness. Surrounded by sugar or molasses in the form of sense-objects, the addicted mind craves to enjoy them through lust, greed, desires, attachment, pride, enviousness and stubborn mindedness, and suffers the consequences.
: Those who are deluded by sensual pleasures, who are tempted by sexual delights and enjoy wine are corrupt (sggs 335).
: Gur mithaa Maya pasriaa manmukhu lagi maakhee pachai pachaai ||1||.
What is the cure? The Gurbani tells us of a Mystic Wine drinking which one can remain eternally "High" and still have his feet firmly established on the ground! What is that True Wine made of? Where it can be found? How is it created? How can one drink in it?

The Divine Naam ( Aatam Giaan...) is the True Wine, the Divine Ecstasy is intoxication ("Naam Khumaaree") with that wine; the Gur-Shabad is the "Bearer" of this Mystic Wine. God is the "Beloved", and linking to this Beloved is but union with the Absolute Truth. How can such Sublime Wine be created? The process to create this True Wine outlined in the Gurbani is as follows:

: Make spiritual wisdom the molasses, meditation the bassia flowers, and the Fear of God the furnace enshrined in your mind. The Shushmanaa, the central spinal channel, becomes intuitively balanced, and then the drinker drinks in this wine.||1|| O hermit Yogi, my mind is intoxicated with this wine. When that wine rises up, one tastes the sublime essence of this Rasa, and sees across the three worlds.||1|| Pause || Joining the two channels of the breath, I have lit the furnace, and I drink in the supreme, sublime essence. I have burnt both lust and anger as fire-wood, and I have been emancipated from the world. ||2 || The light of spiritual wisdom enlightens me; meeting with the Guru, the True Guru, I have obtained this understanding. Slave Kabeer is intoxicated with that wine, which never wears off ||3||2|| (sggs 969).
: Aasaa Mahalaa 1 || Make spiritual wisdom your molasses, and meditation your scented flowers; let good deeds be the herbs. Let devotional faith be the distilling fire, and your love (Bhagti) the ceramic cup. Thus the sweet nectar of life is distilled.||1|| O Baabaa, the mind is intoxicated with the Naam, drinking in its Nectar. It remains absorbed in God's Love. Night and day, remaining attached to the Love of the Lord, the celestial music of the Shabad resounds.||1||Pause|| The Perfect Lord naturally gives the cup of Truth, to the one upon whom He casts His Glance of Grace. One who trades in this Nectar (of Naam) — how could he ever love the false wine of the world? ||2|| (sggs 360).
In summary, the false wine takes man away from Reality, the True Wine takes closer; the false destroys, the True preserves; the false pollutes, the True purifies; the false wreaks havoc, the True brings inner peace; the false wears off, the True is changeless; the false is poison, the True is Amrit; the false is unstable, the True is immutable; the false is temporary and finite, the True is permanent and infinite; the false is demoniac, the True is divine; the false is unconsciousness, the True is all-awareness; the false is filth, the True is purity; the false can be purchased, the True can only be awakened within; the false may provide fleeting pleasure, the True is eternal happiness; the false is restlessness, the True is equanimity; the false is lust, the True is pure love; the false is madness, the True is pure intellect; the false is ignorance, the True is knowledge; the false is forgetfulness, the True is all-remembering; the false is bitter, the True is sweet; the false is sense-slavery, the True is liberation; the false is sickness, the True is haleness; the false is ugly, the True is beauty; the false is cowardliness, the True is fearlessness; the false is shame, the True is grace; the false is illusion, the True is Being; and the false is suffering, the True is Bliss.
: The pure stream (of the true Wine of Naam) constantly trickles forth, and my mind is intoxicated by this sublime elixir. Says Kabeer, all other wines are trivial and tasteless; this is the only true elixir || 4||1|| (sggs 969).
: Raam Rasu peeaa re || Jih ras bisar gaye ras aour ||: I drink in the sublime essence of God's Naam Rasa. With the taste of this Rasa, I have forgotten all other tastes (sggs 337).
