Who is likely to contemplate Giaan – Spiritual Wisdom

Giaan (ਗਿਆਨ) = Divine Knowledge, Spiritual Wisdom… There is expression to the effect that knowledge is the power. As indicated by the Gurbani, Giaan (Divine Knowledge, Spiritual Wisdom…) is indeed the Power. Even kings, rich, effluents, leaders, etc., had to and have to bow before those with Giaan. In Gurdwaras, we all bow (regardless of social status) before Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Thus nothing is equal to the Giaan.

Therefore, one who values Giaan for its own sake, stands to benefit in the long run. But, not everybody is likely to value Giaan for its own sake. Then the question is: Who is most likely to engage in Vichaar (contemplate, pay attention, reflect, think, investigate, inner inquiry, ਖੋਜ…) of the Giaan? The Gurbani answers this question for us as follows:

: Jinaa potai punnu se giaan beechaaree. Jinaa potai punnu tin haumai maaree. Nanak jo naami rate tin kaou balihaaree: Those who have the Virtue (Goodness, merits, holy, inner purity, Gurmukh Lifestyle, piety, ਭਲਾਈ…) in their (inner-ਅੰਤਹਕਰਨ ਰੂਪੀ ਖਜਾਨਾ) Treasure, contemplate Giaan (Divine Knowldge, Spiritual Wisdom…). Those who the Treasure of Virtue, kill egotism (from within). (Says) Nanak (I am) a sacrifice to those who are attuned to the Naam (Giaan…). ||4||7||27|| (sggs 160).

As asserted by the Gurbani, in order for one to contemplate the Giaan (Divine Knowledge, Spiritual Wisdom…), the prerequisite is to have , Divine Virtues (Goodness, merits, holy, inner purity, Gurmukh Lifestyle, piety, Without having cultivated the Treasure of Divine Virtues(Goodness, merits, holy, inner purity, Gurmukh Lifestyle, ਭਲਾਈ…), its unlikely for one to contemplate, reflect or engage in Shabad-Vichhar. So the Gurbani asserts that those who have the Treasure Virtues, contemplate the Giaan

Thus, the practice of Vichaar in particular relates to Giaan (Spiritual Wisdom, Divine Knowledge…). Not knowledge or wisdom in the intellectual sense — but the knowledge of Aatamaa and Parmaatam and the realization of their Oneness. Therefore, Vichaar, then, is the Inner-Inquiry and the search for the Truth within. This Divine Knowledge reveals the Truth to be of the nature of Being-Awareness-Bliss: eternal, infinite, formless, imperishable, limitless, perfect, full-and-filling.

In nutshell, thus, one who values Giaan for its own sake, stands to benefit in the long run. For example:

The stubborn disease of Haumai (false ego-sense…) is eradicated : Jinaa potai punnu tin haumai maaree, sggs 160).

Association with the Truth (Satsangat) is attained : potai Jin kai punnu hai tin satsangati melaai, sggs 30).

Sukh within (Peace, Happiness, Delight, Joy, Natural Ease, Relief…) is attained : Jin Kaou potai punnu paiaa tinaa gur sabadee sukh hoi, sggs 316).

The mouth remains engaged in the Divine Praise : Jin kaou potai punnu hai tinh vaati sapeetee, (sggs 951).

Divine Darshan is attained : Jinh kai potai punnu hai tineeh darsanu paaiaa, sggs 1245).

All of this is possible, because, those who have cultivated the Treasure of Virtues within (Goodness, merits, holy, inner purity, Gurmukh Lifestyle, ਭਲਾਈ…) go to the Guroo in good faith, earnestness, sincerity, without Pakhandbaazee (ਪਖੰਡ)…

: ||16|| Jin kai potai punnu hai se gurmukhi sikh guroo pahi jaate ||16||: Sikh who have become the Gurmukhs, who have Virtue (Goodness, merits, holy, inner purity, Gurmukh Lifestyle, piety, ਭਲਾਈ…) in their (inner-ਅੰਤਹਕਰਨ ਰੂਪੀ ਖਜਾਨਾ) Treasure, (they alone) go to the Guru (Guru’s sanctuary-ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਉਂਣਾਂ) . ||16|| (sggs 648).
: Jinh kai potai punnu tinaah guroo milaae: The Guru meets with those, who take Virtue (Goddness, merits, holy, inner purity, Gurmukh Lifestyle, piety, ਭਲਾਈ…) in their (inner-ਅੰਤਹਕਰਨ ਰੂਪੀ ਖਜਾਨਾ) Treasure (sggs 364).

And, Giaan is attained from the Guroo! : Gur giaanu guroo hari mangeeaa raam, sggs 575).

And, the Truth is realized with the Grace of the Giaan (Gur Parsaadi-

The Giaan thus purifies the mind — the perfect springboard for striving for Liberation (Mukti-
