Sahib and Sewak is One

The Gurbani says that the Sahib and the Sewak is One.

Sahib = Master, Source, Origin, Joti, Mool,
Sewak = Servant, Jeeva, Individual being, mind …

This consistency of the Gurbani is seen throughout. The Gurbani never separates from This Truth, and always comes back to This Principle of “One”.

But we don’t see “One” because of duality (Doojaa-Bhaav, Dubidhaa …). We are conditioned from the childhood to see duality. In this way we are systematically trained or taught about the “second”. For example, down here is the Jeeva, and “up there” or “there yonder” is God …

The Gurbani time and again reminds us that everything is within, not outside; and that whosoever searches outside is deluded or doubt-ridden.

But on account of duality (Doojaa-Bhaav, Dubidhaa, delusion, doubts…), our conditioned consciousness (ਸੁਰਤ) remains divided in “this” and “that”, and remains scattered in “ten directions” …

Due to the lack of earnest Shabad Vichaar, duality or Mayaic consciousness (ਮਾਇਕੀ ਸੁਰਤ) becomes dense, and the Sahib and the Sewak are not seen as “One” (“ਇਕੁ”) – although they are “One” (“ਇਕੁ”).

However, the one who has become the Gurmukh sees the Sahib and the Sewak as “One” (“ਇਕੁ”); for he gets absorbed in the Truth (ਸਚ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ, ਸਚ ਵਿਚ ਸਮਾਏ ਹੋਏ) by the Grace of the Giaan (Divine Knowledge, Gurmat, Shabad-Giaan, Aatam-Giaan …).

Sahibu sewaku iku drisataaiaa. Gur prasaadi Nanak sachi samaaiaa ||21||1||2||Sudhu (sggs 524).
: Teree sevaa tujh te hovai aouru n doojaa karataa (sggs 1185).

The Gurbani congratulates those who – through the Gur-Giaan – Realize the “One”. Furhtermore, the Gurbani says that only he lives who recognizes the “One”.

: Nanak se saabasi jinee gur mili ik pachhaaniaa ||2|| (sggs 329).
: Nanak soee jeeviaa jini eku pachhaataa ||6|| (sggs 329).

To see the Sahib and Sewak as “One”, the Gurbani repeatedly instructs:

  • Becoming Ik Man Ik Chit (ਮਨ ਅਤੇ ਚਿਤ ਦਾ ਇਕ ਹੋਂਣਾ, mind linked with the Antar-Aatmaa).
  • Linking with the immortal and undying Mool within (“ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲੀ ਸੰਗਿ ਜੋਤਿ” sggs 524).
  • Seeing through the eyes of the Shabad-Vichaar.
  • Being established in “Sahaj” (Natural State of Being, ਆਤਮਿਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ) and “Aanand” (Bliss, ਆਤਮਿਕ ਅਨੰਦ).
  • Being contented in all situations (ਸਤ ਸੰਤੋਖੀ).
  • Being established in Viveka-Budhi –
  • Eradicating Maya’s hunger from within – ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ ਉਦਾਸੀ.
  • Making the Akal (ਅਕਲ , intellect, etc.) to follow the Gurbani …
