How Do We Become Maya’s Muhataaj

Muhataaj ( ਮੁਹਤਾਜ ) = necessitous, needy, indigent, subservient, dependence, slave of, in control of, ਗੁਲਾਮ, ਪਰ ਅਧੀਨ, ਲੋੜਵੰਦ, ਅਰਥੀਆ …
Bemuhataaj ( ਬੇਮੁਹਤਾਜ or ਵੇਮੁਹਤਾਜ ) – is the opposite of Muhataaj.

The Gurbani shows us as to how we become Maya’s Muhataaj. But first, what’s Maya? If we must put it in words, Maya is the delusive or the deceptive force of our conditioned mind (deluded, corrupted, or doubt-ridden intellect, Budhi …) that makes us forget our True Nature or Mool (“Hari Visrai”), it gives rise to emotional attachment (“Moh Upjai”), it creates duality or Dubidhaa (“Bhaaou Doojaa”) where there is none, on ccount of it we live in doubts (“Bharam”) and egotism (“Haumai”)…

: Ih maya jitu hari visarai mohu oupjai bhaaou doojaa laaiaa (sggs 921).
: Maya kis no aakheeai kiaa maya karam kamaai. Dukhi sukhi jeeou badhu hai haoumai karam kamaai (sggs 67).

Now, why do we become Muhataaj of Maya? According to the Gurbani:

: Antar aatamai brahm n cheenihhaa maya kaa muhtaaj bhaiaa||7|| (sggs 435).
: Dubidhaa rogu adhik vaderaa maya kaa muhataaj bhaiaa ||8|| (sggs 1153).

As indicated in the foregoing verses of the Gurbani, the reason we become the Maya’s Muhataaj is that we are unwilling to go within or look within to recognize the Brahm in our own Antar (Inner) Aatamaa (Soul).

The Gurbani says only the Inner (ਅੰਤਰ ਆਤਮਾ …) is the Bemuhataaj (“ਬੇਮੁਹਤਾਜੁ”) – “Bemuhataaj” is the opposite of “Muhataaj“. And, as the Gurbani indicates, once separated from this Bemuhataaj Inner, we become Muhtaaj of all Bikaars (lust, anger, greed, etc.). And the Bikaars pull us down.

: Fareedaa kantu rangavalaa vemuhtaaju (sggs 1383).
: Satiguru meraa bemuhtaaju (sggs 1142).
: Hari bisarat sabh kaa muhataaj (sggs 802).
: Labi lobhi muhataaji vigoote ib tab phiri pachhutaaee (sggs 930).

To put it otherwise, when the crooked mind (guided by the conditioned Budhi) looks for the Essence, Brahm, Mool, Satigur, Kant (Husband Lord), or Truth outside, its delusion thickens and loses itself in the Maya’s perpetual slumber. Because, outside, there is the unending prevalence of Maya’s lure, enticement or enchantment everywhere.

: Maya mohit jini ihu rasu khoiaa jaa saakat doramati laagaa (sggs 598).

In other words, the worldly Budhi (the Manmukh Budhi, the Saakat Budhi, the Pandit Budhi, etc.) is Maya’s Muhataaj. That being the case, the Pujaaree group in the Gurdawaras (Bhais, Raagees, Parchaarak, Paathees, the scholars or ਵਿਦਵਾਨ …) and those who patronize their Mayaic mentality are all Maya’s Muhataaj.

: Maya kaa muataaju panditu kahaavai (sggs 231).

Mayaic Budhi pulls us down and we miss the real purpose of our life (become Ik Mann Ik Chit, become One with the Mool …).

: Yaa Yug mahi ekahi kaou aaiaa. Janmat mohio mohanee maya (sggs 251).

The Gurbani asserts that one comes to know the real Truth (ਧੁਰ-ਅੰਦਰਲੀ ਅਸਲੀਅਤ) only when one dwells in his own Aatam Tirath (ਆਤਮ ਤੀਰਥ), within (ਅੰਦਰਲੇ).

: Sachu taan paru jaaneeai jaa aatam teerathi kare nivaasu (sggs 468).

Thus, the Gurbani’s Satsang is Omniscient (Niraakaar, of Antar Aatamaa – ਅੰਤਰ ਆਤਮਾ – mind’s abidance in Divine Virtues -ਆਤਮਕ ਗੁਣ, ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ…), within (ਅੰਦਰ).

: Antar aatmai jo milai miliaa kaheeai soi (sggs 791).
:Antari teerathu giaanu hai satigur deeaa bujhaai (sggs 587).

Thus, to transcend Maya’s Muhtaajee, we can only (ਕੇਵਲ) count on Realization of This “Antar Aatamai” (Inner Soul …). For, the one who unites deep within his Soul (ਜੋ ਅੰਤਰ ਆਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲੇ – “Antar aatamai“), only he is said to be United. This is the Gurbani’s edict.
