Haraamkhor

Generally spelt as Haramkhor but pronounced as Haraamkhor – ਹਰਾਮਖੋਰ  = ਹਰਾਮ + ਖੋਰ = One who persists on unrighteous earnings of others, who makes his earnings by doing what he is not supposed to be doing …

As Sikhi is a way of life, Sikhs are to remember and emphasize in their individual and corporate life: (1) Kirat Karnee (ਕਿਰਤ ਕਮਾਈ), (2) Vand Shaknaa (ਵੰਡ ਛਕਣਾ), and (3) Naam Japnaa (ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣਾ).

First, “Kirat Karnee” (ਕਿਰਤ ਕਮਾਈ) is the right way of living which includes honest or truthful way of labor or earning and work side by side with the search of the Truth (i.e., the Gurmukh Lifestyle, ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਕਮਾਈ …).

Based on the very basic definition of the term “Haraamkhor” (ਹਰਾਮਖੋਰ), one who does not earn his own living, righteously, is essentially a “Haraamkhor“. Simply put it in Punjabi: ਕਿਰਤ ਕਮਾਈ ਨਹੀ ਕਰਨਾ ਹਰਾਮਖੋਰੀ ਹੈ.

In words, a “Haraamkhor” (ਹਰਾਮਖੋਰ) is the one who keeps eye on other’s pocket.

A “Haraamkhor” (ਹਰਾਮਖੋਰ) expects food, shelter, and clothing from others.

In nutshell, to put it mildly, a “Haraamkhor” (ਹਰਾਮਖੋਰ) is a lazy, rascal, rogue, scoundrel, wicked, thieve, embezzler, exploiter, burglar, a freeloader, ਪਰਾਇਆ ਹੱਕ ਖਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ …

He conducts in a way that is time and again repudiated by the Gurbani (Manmukh lifestyle) – he acts contrary to the Gurbani.

The Gurbani indicates that there are countless of such “Haraamkhor” (ਹਰਾਮਖੋਰ) in the world – ਅਸੰਖ ਚੋਰ ਹਰਾਮਖੋਰ ॥: Asankh chor haraamkhor, (sggs 3).

In fact, many such “Haraamkhor” (ਹਰਾਮਖੋਰ) who take from others and exploit them call themselves “Sant“!

Now, going back to the three practices mentioned above, if one is devoid of “Kirat Kamaaee” (ਕਿਰਤ ਕਮਾਈ), he will remain devoid of the practice of “Vand Shaknaa” (ਵੰਡ ਛਕਣਾ)! In turn, in the absence of both “Kirat Kamaaee” and “Vand Shaknaa“, he cannot honestly practice “Naam Japnaa” (ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣਾ – ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਕਮਾਈ, Shabad Vichaar, Understand the Gurbani, Aatam-Giaan …)! Now perhaps we can appreciate as to why Baabaa Nanak thunders forth the following declaration: : Giaan vihoonaa gaavai geet…, (sggs 1245).

Further, as indicated in the Gurbani, a “Haraamkhor” (ਹਰਾਮਖੋਰ) is very unappreciative and ungrateful – ਮੈ ਕੀਤਾ ਨ ਜਾਤਾ ਹਰਾਮਖੋਰੁ: Mai keetaa n jaataa haraamkhor (sggs 24); ਲੂਣੁ ਖਾਇ ਕਰਹਿ ਹਰਾਮਖੋਰੀ ਪੇਖਤ ਨੈਨ ਬਿਦਾਰਿਓ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥: Loonu khaai karahi haraamkhoree pekhat nain bidaario ||Rahaaou|| (sggs 1001).

Why does a “Haraamkhor” (ਹਰਾਮਖੋਰ) conduct himself this way? For a “Haraamkhor” (ਹਰਾਮਖੋਰ) is indicated to be a “ਨਿਰਗੁਣ” (one devoid of any Divine Virtues …). In other words, “Haraamkhoree” and being “ਨਿਰਗੁਣ” is synonymous – ਹਰਾਮਖੋਰ ਨਿਰਗੁਣ ਕਉ ਤੂਠਾ ॥: Haraamkhor nirgun kaou toothaa (sggs 1142).
