Glory of the Giaanee

Giaan = Divine Knowledge, Spiritual Wisdom, Aatam-Giaan
Giaanee = the person of Aatam-Giaan, Spiritual Wisdom, the Gurmukh

The following verse of the Gurbani indicates the “Mahatu” (“ਮਹਤੁ” = significance, importance, glory, magnificence, gravity, distinction, greatness, nobility, grandeur, ਵਡਿਆਈ…) of a Giaanee: The Giaaneee ever remains absorbed in the mind (ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕੇ ਰਹਿਣਾਂ; ਇਕ ਮਨ ਇਕ ਚਿਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਣਾਂ; ਅਪਣੇ ਮੂਲ ਵਿਚ ਸਮਾਏ ਰਹਿਣਾਂ; he remains linked to the Mool – Source, Origin; he remains established in Viveka-budhi of the Gurbani- ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰਮਤ ਦੀ ਪੂਰੀ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੈ, the mind remains linked to Antar-Aatmaa…).

In other words, the Giaanee does not follow Maya (or runs after the Golak-ਗੋਲਕ!). Having transcended Maya, the Giaanee remains interiorized (ਅੰਦਰ ਵਲ ਪਰਤੇ ਰਹਿਣਾਂ, ਅੰਤਰਮੁਖੀ, introverted, ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ, ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ ਉਦਾਸੀ…).

  • ਗਿਆਨੀਆ ਕਾ ਇਹੁ ਮਹਤੁ ਹੈ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਨਾ ॥: Giaaneeaa kaa ihu mahatu hai man maahi samaanaa (sggs 1089).

Thus, he who values Giaan (Divine Knowledge, Wisdom, Gurmat …) for its own sake, stands to benefit in the long run. The Gurbani time and again affirms that nothing can equal Giaan. Not even power can equal Giaan; because even kings had to bow before the Men of Giaan.

The Gurbani indicates that this Giaan reveals the Innate Nature of our Mool (ਮੂਲ) as Great Bliss (ਮਹਾ ਅਨੰਦ), Eternal…

  • ਮਹਾ ਅਨੰਦੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥: Mahaa anandu Gur Sabadu veechaari (sggs 370).

So, the Giaanee continues to Reflect on the Giaan, and, as a result, the Giaan keeps growing, expanding, deepening…:

  • ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕਾ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਗਿਆਨ ॥: Brahm Giaanee kaa bhojanu giaan (sggs 273).
  • ਗਿਆਨੀ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ॥: Giaanee giaanu kamaavahi (sggs 71).
  • ਤਿਸੁ ਮਹਿ ਧਾਰ ਚੁਐ ਅਤਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਰਸ ਮਹਿ ਰਸਨ ਚੁਆਇਆ ॥੨॥: Tis mahi dhaar chuai ati niramal ras mahi rasan chuaaiaa ||2|| (sggs 92).

In this way, the Giaanee keeps searching as to who he truly is (ਆਪਣੇ ਅਸਲੇ – ਮੂਲ – ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣਨਾਂ, ਸਮਝਣਾਂ …).

  • ਆਪੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ਸੁ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਹੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥: Aawpu beechaare su giaanee hoee ||1||Rahaaou|| (sggs 152).
  • ਸੋ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਜਿਨਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥: So Giani jini shabdi liv laaee (sggs 831).

Furthermore, as the Gurbani indicates, the Giaanee deals only with Sach (ਸਚ, One Truth), Divine Virtues (ਗੁਣ) …

  • ਗੁਣ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਸੋਇ ॥ ਗੁਣ ਮਹਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥: Gun veechare giaanee soi. Gun mahi giaanu praapati hoi (931).
  • ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥ ਮਨਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਸੋਇ ॥ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਪੇਖੈ ਏਕਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਕੋਇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹ ਲਛਣ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥: Saloku || Mani saachaa mukhi saachaa hoi. Awaru n pekhai ekasu binu koi. Nanak ih lachhan brahm giaanee hoi ||1|| (sggs 272).

In the worldly sense, materiall wealth or riches is considered as the real Wealth (Dhann-ਧੰਨ). However, the Gurbani indicates the Naam (Aatam-Giaan, Gur-Giaan, Shabad-Giaan …) to be the Real Wealth of the Giaanee. With this Wealth, the Giaanee transacts with the world of names and forms in Sahaj Avastaa (the Natural State of Being, ਆਤਮਿਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ, ਗਿਆਨ ਅਵਸਤਾ…)! Also, the Gurbani indicates that only a Brahm Giaanee can know the state of an other Brahm Giaanee.

  • ਗਿਆਨੀਆ ਕਾ ਧਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਵਾਪਾਰੁ ॥: Giaaneeaa kaa dhanu giaan hai sahaji karahi vaapaar (sggs 68).
  • ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਜਾਨੈ ॥: Brahm giaanee kee gati brahm giaanee jaanai (sggs 273).

    I have a question. Normally we call the priest of a Gurdwara sahib as a Giaanee, is that right? because not all priests can be Giaanee. We had a incident at our Gurdwara sahib where the priest was upset when the new management committee objected to the income which Giaanee ji was making and not paying taxes on it.

      If a person is working for the salary basis in an organization. He/She is just an employee of that organization. And being an employee he/she must adhere to the conditions,rules and regulations of that money centered business organization.
