Fakir and Gurmukh

As indicated in the Gurbani, a Fakir (pronounced Fakeer) and a Gurmukh are different stages.

First, the Gurbani defines the Fakeer here:

  • ਜਿਨ ਕੈ ਪਲੈ ਧਨੁ ਵਸੈ ਤਿਨ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ਫਕੀਰ ॥: Jin kai palai dhanu vasai tin kaa naaou Fakeer: Those who possess the Wealth (of Naam-Dhann or Naam-Wealth) are known as Fakeer. (sggs 1287). 

As the Naam-Dhann is essentially the same as Giaan-Dhann (the Wealth of the Divine Knowledge), it can be said that the Fakeer is he who possesses the Naam-Dhann (ਨਾਮ ਧੰਨ) – Giaan Dhann (ਗਿਆਨ ਧੰਨ), Sach (ਸੱਚ) or Truth… In turn, the Naam-Dhann causes the mind’s annihilation. Thus, it can be said that the Fakeer is he who is contented (ਸੰਤੋਖੀ). -“ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੈ…” (sggs 759) or “ਗਿਆਨ ਕਾ ਬਧਾ ਮਨੁ ਰਹੈ…” (sggs 469).

However, to possess Giaan, ਸੱਚ or Truth is one thing, but to live it constantly (ਸਾਸ ਸਾਸ) is entirely different.

The Gurmukh is both – he not only posses the complete Aatm-Giaan, but also constantly lives it (each and every breath). He is the Gunee Gaheer – Ocean of Virtues.

Gunee Gaheer“is a different stage. “Gunee Gaheer” simply means the “Ocean of Virtues” – like God. For in the Gurbani, God is also said to be the Ocean of Virtues. Such a God like person – Gunee Gaheer – is also called the Gurmukh in the Gurbani.

The Gurbani defines as follows who the “Gunee Gaheer” is:

  • ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਕੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਤੂ ਵਸਹਿ ਤੇ ਨਰ ਗੁਣੀ ਗਹੀਰ ॥੧॥: ||1|| Jinh kai hirdai too vasai te nar gunee gaheer ||1||: (O Lord!) Those, within whose Hearts You dwell, those people are the Ocean of Virtues. ||1|| (sggs 1287). 

Thus, those who abide in the Truth, they are the Gunee Gaheer or the Ocean of Virtues – the Gurmukhs (“…ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣਤਾਸੁ” (sggs 301).

To put it otherwise , we can say that the Fakir is one-eyed (i.e, the Fakeer has only one eye opened – “ਕਾਣਾ”), whilst the Gurmukh has two-eyed (i.e., the Gurmukh has both eyes opened – “ਗਿਆਨੀ ਸਿਆਣਾ”, “ਸੁਜਾਖਾ”).

    Deep analysyis again.

    But somehow I had I held a different interpretation of the two verses together –

    “ਜਿਨ ਕੈ ਪਲੈ ਧਨੁ ਵਸੈ ਤਿਨ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ਫਕੀਰ ॥ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਕੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਤੂ ਵਸਹਿ ਤੇ ਨਰ ਗੁਣੀ ਗਹੀਰ”

    To me it appeared more of a comparison; ਧਨੁ actually implying the worldly whealth, possession of which practically makes you a pauper (devoid of real goodness) and in contrast those who truly have Almighty dwelling in their hearts are the oceans of virtues.
