Crookedness of the Mind

Both the ocean and the wave are water. Waves arise at the surface of the ocean due to wind. If there is no wind created disturbance (e.g., deep below the surface of the ocean), there will be no waves. Hence waves are disturbance at the surface of the ocean due to wind. Although both the ocean and its waves are made of the same one water, but for the sake of discussion one is called the ocean and the other is called the wave.

: Jal te trang trang te jalu kahan sunana kaou dojaa ||1|| (sggs 1252).

Similarly, for the sake of discussion, the relationship between the mind and Aatmaa can be said as between the ocean and waves, gold and a bracelet, clay and a pot …

The mind in essence arises due to the disturbance created on the surface of the Infinite Pool of Pure Consciousness (Jot …) by the stormy winds of Maya. When impulses, emotions, or waves of Bikaars or Haumai (desires, greed, etc.) subside, the mind once again reverts back to its Mool (Joti-svaroopa …), just as only water remains as water after the wave has ceased to exist as a separate entity from the water.

Perhaps that’s why the Gurbani repeatedly tells us that the mind can only be reconciled with the mind.

Implication is that our mind could be our best ally, and the same mind could be our worst enemy or nightmare!!

The mind’s crookedness distances us from our True self (Mool, Joti-Svaroopa …). The deluded (conditioned, Mayaic …) mind’s projection are Bikaars (e.g., lust, anger, greed, attachment, pride and countless variations of these “five” (ਇਨ ਪੰਚਨ ਮੇਰੋ ਮਨੁ ਜੁ ਬਿਗਾਰਿਓ ॥ , sggs 222)…

The Gurbani repeatedly reminds us that the culprit behind our troubles is the instinctive mind, whose diseases are not only devastating but also subtle, thereby, invisible to our material eyes.

In order to diagnose mind’s diseased condition, reflection on it’s mysteries are needed. Crookedness of the deluded mind include impurity, restlessness, imaginations, veil of ignorance, veil of egotism, veil of Maya ….

: Janam janam kee isu man kaou malu laagee kaalaa hoaa siaah (sggs 651).
: Chanchal manu dah disi kaou dhaavat achal jaahi thaharaano (sggs 685).
: Antar agiaan dukhu bharam hai vichi parradaa doori paeeaasi (sggs 40).
: Maya patal patal hai bhaaree gharu ghoomani gheri ghulaavaigo (sggs 1308).

The Gurbani indicates that without overpowering the mind’s Bikaars , sggs 1140), it’s impossible to reach the mind’s Original State (Mool, Joti-Svaroopa …).

    Lele (baby sheep ) ko choonge nit bhed(sheep)
    Gurbani vichar to rahit budhi(bhed,sheep) lele(mann,mind) nu choong(suck) rahi hai. bhav eh ki mann ne budhi nu apne magar laya hoya hai te apni marji kar reha hai. jis din budhu nu gurmat da gyan mil jayega ta oh mann da picha chad degi te chit naal milke mann nu vi samjhayegi ki tu chit to hi paida hoya hain te is vich hi milna hai matlab mann ne apni marji chad ke guru de hukam vich aa jana hai. jal(chit) to jo mann rupi tarang(wave , lahar) paida hoyi si oh phir to jal ban jayegi. The mind’s crookedness will completely disappear, te mann sadheya jayega(mann da marna). jo is avastha nu prapat karda hai osnu hi sadhu kehnde han.
