Counting Beads is Contrary to Gurmat

Counting beads is rejected in the Gurmat (Wisdom, Giaan, Upadesh, Way of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib, SGGS…).

Counting beads ==> ਮਾਲਾ ਫੇਰਨੀ, to take on rosary or  Mala (pronounced as Maalaa),  telling beads, etc.

When Baabaa Kabeer realized he wasted his life in Kashi (“ਸਗਲ ਜਨਮੁ ਸਿਵ ਪੁਰੀ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥”, (sggs 326). ) by following the worthless rituals prescribed by the Brahmin / Pundit (such as counting beads – Maalaa or rosary, and so on), he moved from there. And then, after realizing the uselessness of counting beads, he threw away the rosary and declared:

: Bhagti cannot be performed with hunger (for Maya…). (So) Here is Your Maalaa (rosary), take it back (sggs 656).

According to the Gurbani, the person who counts beads (ਮਾਲਾ ਫੇਰਨੀ), his mind is full of hunger for Maya — totally Mann Mateeaa (ਮਨ ਮਤੀਆ-the Manmukh who lives against the Gurmat or Teaching of the Gurbani). Those who take on Maalaa are called “ਨਿਪੂਤੇ” (worthless son-ਔਂਤਰਾ) in the Gurbani, for in such worthless stubborn minded practice there can be no peace and happiness.

: Jabb kee maalaa laee nipoote tabb te sukhu n bhaio ||1||Rahaaou||: Ever since this worthless (ਔਂਤਰਾ) son (Kabeer Sahib) has taken the Maalaa (rosary), since than there has been no Sukha (peace, joy, happiness, etc.)! ||1||Pause|| (sggs 856).

Thus, the Gurbani repudiates (Khandan) Pakhand-Baazee (deception, hypocrisy, humbug, pretense, etc.) such as counting beads (chanting with Maalaa, rosary). Such nonsense was introduced by the Pujaaree group (Bhais, Granthees, Raagees, Jathedaars, Paathees, Deraavaad Baabaas or Sant, Kathaakaars, Giaanees, Parchaaraks, and so on) who purposely intended to corrupt the Gurmat. Instead of correcting this mistake, unfortunately, this falsehood is not only carried on, but further propagated by the deceptive Pujaaree group. It’s all “Golak Daa Chakkar” (money or business in the name of Gurbani or Dharma)! The Gurbani wants us to make the Divine Naam (Gur-Giaan, Divine Wisdom through Shabad-Vichaar…) the rosary enshrined in the Heart within.

: Who holds the rosary of the Divine Naam within the Heart, deters the suffering of birth and death. ||2|| (sggs 388).
  • ਰਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਜਪਮਾਲੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥: Let your rosary be the enshrining of Raam (-Naam) in your Heart. ||1||Pause|| (sggs 503).

In nutshell, the SGGS (Sri Guru Grant Sahib) urges us to make the virtuous conduct (ਨੇਕ ਆਚਰਨ) our Maalaa (rosary).

: O Brahmin! Instead of worshipping the stone-god (idol worship), worship (or understand Raam or Mool, within) and try pleasing Him. Practice Virtuous conduct, this is your rosary (sggs 1170).
: Let good conduct be your Kaabaa, Truth your spiritual guide, and pious deeds your Kalmaa and Namaaz. Let your rosary be that which is pleasing to the Divine Will. O Nanak! (The Divine) preserves the honor (such Muslim). ||1|| (sggs 140).
: Kabeer meree simrani rasanaa upari Raamu (sggs 1364).

Hence Baabaa Kabeer questions: If you do not understand Raam (Mool, Hari, Gobind,  Prabh, Allah…) within, then what use is this external rosary to you that you wear and show it to other people?

ਕਬੀਰ ਜਪਨੀ ਕਾਠ ਕੀ ਕਿਆ ਦਿਖਲਾਵਹਿ ਲੋਇ ॥ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਹੀ ਇਹ ਜਪਨੀ ਕਿਆ ਹੋਇ ॥੭੫॥: O Kabeer! Why do you show other people your wooden rosary beads? You do not remember Raam (Mool…) in your Heart, so what use is this rosary to you? ||75|| (sggs 1368).

: Kabeer, what good is it to become a God’s devotee, and wear four Maalaas? On the outside, you (pretend to) look like pure gold; but on the inside, you are stuffed with filth or Bhangaar (sggs 1372).
: (O lewd man!) You wear the Rudraksha Rosary around your neck, but your Heart is filled with falsehood (sggs 1351).
: Galee jinhaa japmaaleeyaa… (sggs 476).

But still, as seen everyday, the emphasis of most of the Pujaaree group is only to promote religious paraphernalia and rituals (Karamkaand), which are strongly repudiated by the Gurbani. They are totally in contradiction with the Divine Wisdom (Aatam-Giaan…) and purpose of the SGGS. Why does Gurbani rejects this nonsense? Because all calculations or all calculated Bhagti is in false ego-sense (Haumai). Consider these verses:

: All accounting is in egotism. In this accounting, there is no Peace (sggs 36).
: Ganatai prabhoo na paaeeai doojai bharameetaa: God cannot be obtained by counting; the mortal wanders in doubt — Maya, duality etc. (sggs 510).
: One who enters into a calculated relationship with the Satigur loses all “Halat” (external Mayaic world…) and “Palat” (Inner spiritual world, Heart….).  (sggs 307).

This Giaan (Wisdom) of the Gurbani is also meant for those who identify themselves as Sikhs!!!!!

Gurmat and Saakat-Matt are two different and opposing things. All counting is for the conditioned or material mindset (Manmukh or Mayadhaaree or Saakat-Matt …). Because, consumed by the fire of Maya, the lifestyle of such stubborn mind is in the realm of calculations.

There is no counting or calculations for the one who has become the Gurmukh; because he knows he is not separate from God. He thus relieves himself of all egoistic or mental calculations through the constant abidance in his Jot Saroop.

So the Gurbani urges us to become the Gurmukh and stop Pakhand or Parpanch (hypocrisy, deception, worldly entanglements, etc.).

: The Gurmukh erases all calculations (sggs 942).
  • ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਰਲੇ ਪਾਈਅਹਿ ਜੋ ਨ ਰਚਹਿ ਪਰਪੰਚ ॥੫॥: O Nanak! Rare are those, who do not create “Parpanch”. ||5|| (sggs 297).

Apparently, those (Pujaaree group, etc.) who describe or portray the Gurus and Bhagat counting beads (ਮਾਲਾ ਫੇਰਨੀ) are clueless about the Gurmat (Wisdom, Giaan, Upadesh or Way of the SGGS).
