Cleverness

As indicated in the Gurbani, our cleverness (ਸਿਆਨਪ, ਸਿਆਣਪ…) can be lumped in two groups:

1. Oukati Siaanap (“ਉਕਤਿ ਸਿਆਨਪ”) — spiritually speaking, this is harmful.
2. Param Siaanap (“ਪਰਮ ਸਿਆਨਪ”) — spiritually speaking, this is beneficial.

1. Oukati Siaanap (ਉਕਤਿ ਸਿਆਨਪ)

In nutshell, ਉਕਤਿ ਸਿਆਨਪ (Oukati Siaanap) => Cleverness (ਸਿਆਨਪ, ਸਿਆਣਪ…) that takes us away from our Mool (Source, Jot…), or that makes us oppose the Hukam-Naam-Shabad; cleverness that dims our Aatam-Giaan, and so on [ Oukti (ਉਕਤਿ) => empty talk or arguments, ਦਲੀਲ-ਬਾਜੀ, ਤਜਵੀਜ-ਬਾਜੀ, ਨਿਰੀਆਂ ਗਲਾਂ, ਉਲਟੇ ਪਾਸੇ ਲਾਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਸਿਆਨਪ, worldly or Mayaic intellect, doubt-ridden mind’s trickery, Manmukh-mind, conditioned or corrupt intellect (Durmat-ਦੁਰਮਤ), Haumai intellect or cleverness (ego-guided intellect or cleverness), etc.].

The Gurbani repeatedly reminds us to renounce this Oukati Siaanap (ਉਕਤਿ ਸਿਆਨਪ).

: Give up all Oukati Siaanap (sggs 177).
: Manmukhu andhu kare chaturaaee (sggs 1064).

Why? Because, simply said, it puts us on the wrong path! The Gurbani coutions us that nothing can be accomplished with Oukati Siaanap (ਉਕਤਿ ਸਿਆਨਪ). In other words, Oukati Siaanap (ਉਕਤਿ ਸਿਆਨਪ) cannot help us accomplish the Goal of human life — Realization of one’s Mool (Source, Jot…), within!

: By Oukati Siaanap (ਉਕਤਿ ਸਿਆਨਪ), nothing is accomplished (sggs 196).

To the contrary, Oukati Siaanap (ਉਕਤਿ ਸਿਆਨਪ) only increases the load on the soul – more and more load of Maya or Bikaar (demerits, flaws, negativity, blemishes; faults-lust, anger, greed, etc.).

: Through clever tricks (performed in the love of Maya), the weight (of Bikaar) is only piled on more and more (sggs 178).

So, the Gurbani Teaches us that such Siaanap (ਸਿਆਨਪ) is of no use whatsoever!

: All debates and Siaanap (ਨਿਰੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ-mere talks…) are of no use at all (sggs 258).

In fact, Baabaa Nanak Teaches us this Truth in the very onset of the SGGS:

  • ਸਹਸ ਸਿਆਣਪਾ ਲਖ ਹੋਹਿ ਤ ਇਕ ਨ ਚਲੈ ਨਾਲਿ ॥: Hundreds of thousands of clever tricks, but not even one of them will go along with you in the end (sggs 6).

Therefore, if we wish to realize our Mool (Source, Jot…), hear and now (while alive, not after death!), then the Gurbani urges us to renounce our Oukati Siaanap (ਉਕਤਿ ਸਿਆਨਪ).

  • ਉਕਤਿ ਸਿਆਨਪ ਸਗਲ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਲਏ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੧॥: O Nanak! Cast aside all Oukati Siaanap (ਉਕਤਿ ਸਿਆਨਪ) and (Hari-Mool…) will absorb you into Himself ||1|| . (sggs 260).
Sassaa (a letter of the Gurmukhi alphabet): Give up Siaanap (ਸਿਆਨਪ), you ignorant fool! Prabhu (Mool…) is not confided with clever tricks and commands (sggs 260).
: Oukati siaanap kichhoo n jaanaa (sggs 387).
: Bahutu siaanap haumai meree (sggs 1251).

2. Param Siaanap (ਪਰਮ ਸਿਆਨਪ)

In nutshell, Param Siaanap (ਪਰਮ ਸਿਆਨਪ) => Highest Wisdom, best or original cleverness, Supreme Wisdom, Aatam-Giaan, Wisdom of the Gur-Shabad, Gurmat, and so on.

Instead of Oukati Siaanap (ਉਕਤਿ ਸਿਆਨਪ), the Gurbani wants us to adopt Param Siaanap (ਪਰਮ ਸਿਆਨਪ).

: Ngənga (a letter of the Gurmukhi alphabet): Restrain (your senses), bear Love (to the Prabh-Mool), and dismiss doubts. Even if you do not see (to accomplish this difficult task), do not run away; this is the “Param Siaanap” (ਪਰਮ ਸਿਆਨਪ-Highest Wisdom…). ||11|| (sggs 340).
: That alone is intelligence, that alone is wisdom and cleverness, which inspires one to never forget Prabh (Mool…), even for an instant (sggs 978).
  • ਛੋਡਿ ਸਗਲ ਸਿਆਣਪਾ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥: Give up all your clever mental tricks, and lovingly attune yourself to the True Shabad. ||1||Pause|| (sggs 51).

Thus, the Param Siaanap (ਪਰਮ ਸਿਆਨਪ) is the Spiritual Wisdom or the Divine Knowledge of the Gurbani (this is the Bibek-Budhi of the Gurbani, Shabad-Guaan, Gur-Giaan, Gurmat, Aaatam-Giaan, Abidance in Namm-Hukam-Shabad…).

In nutshell, the Gurbani urges us to transform our ignorance (ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ) into Wisdom of the Gurbani. Because, without giving up our own Oukati Siaanap (ਉਕਤਿ ਸਿਆਨਪ), we cannot take the Guroo’s Wisdom (ਪਰਮ ਸਿਆਨਪ).

: (My) ignorance has been totally transformed into Wisdom, (because, on account of the Gur-Giaan or Wisdom, now I understand that my) Prabh (Mool) is All-seeing and All-knowing (sggs 823).

Sikhi is Giaan Maarag

Sikhi is Giaan Maarag — a Way of the Wisdom of the Gur-Shabad, not a way of the Mayaic trickery or cleverness!

Ultimate Instruction of the Gurbani (ਮੁਕਦੀ ਗੱਲ) is that only Essence of the Divine Knowledge (“ਤਤੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ”– ਪ੍ਰਚੰਡ ਗਿਆਨ, ਅਸਲ ਗਿਆਨ, ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਅਸਲ ਸੂਝ…) is eternal or permanent. Therefore, all other intellect must burn away. Thus, with proper understanding and implementation of the Giaan (Wisdom) of the Gur-Shabad, a Gurmukh burns away all his worldly intellect (all Mayaic Budhi, ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਸਿਆਣਪਾਂ…) through the Gur-Shabad-Vichaar.  He only retains the Tatt Budhi or Tatt Giaan (“ਤਤੁ ਬੁਧਿ”-Bibek Budhi; Essence of the Wisdom-“ਤਤੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ”…).

  • ਸਭ ਬੁਧੀ ਜਾਲੀਅਹਿ ਇਕੁ ਰਹੈ ਤਤੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ: All (Mayaic) intellect (ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਹੀ ਸਿਆਣਪਾਂ) are unavailing (useless, futile…); only the Essence of Spiritual Wisdom lasts (remains…). ||4|| (sggs 1413).
: Prabh kai simrani giaanu dhiaanu tatu budhi (sggs 262).

When Mayaic trickery / cleverness (thoughts, wanderings-ਫੁਰਨੇ) are reduced; power of the mind and it’s subtlety increases. A mind so cleansed (ਨਿਰਮਲ) becomes in tune or one with the Universal Mind.

    The crux of the message is certainly stated as “Ultimate Instruction of the Gurbani (ਮੁਕਦੀ ਗੱਲ) is that only Essence of the Divine Knowledge (“ਤਤੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ”– ਪ੍ਰਚੰਡ ਗਿਆਨ, ਅਸਲ ਗਿਆਨ, ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਅਸਲ ਸੂਝ…) is eternal or permanent”
    This ਤਤੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ”– is SINGLE ONE and that is NAAMu only as HARi HARi NAAMu.

    • Thank you Bhai Sahib Ji for taking the time and share your Vichaar.

    Yes Veer jeo ,
    The ultimate one message in Gurbaanee is as “NANAK KAE GHARi KEWAL NAAMu”

    • Yes Bhai Sahib Ji:
: Gur kai Sabadi jeevatu marai Hari Naamu vasai mani aai ||1||: (The person who) through the Gur-Shabad (Giaan of the Gur-Shabad…), remains dead (from Maya, Haumai, Bikaar…) while yet alive, Naam comes to dwell within (his) mind ||1|| (sggs 33).
      The Gurbani is full of many more related verses, but all cannot be given from a space point of view. Thank you!

    NAAMu is the support of the whole of universe (visible objects as well as invisible)
    Nothing can exist without NAAMu. In true and real sense that human life is fruitful
    which has recognised NAAMu thru meeting with GuRu as envisaged in SGGS ji.

    6.ਅਵਰ ਸਿਆਨਪ ਸਗਲੀ ਛਾਡੁ ॥ਤਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਕੀ ਤੂ ਸੇਵਾ ਲਾਗੁ ॥
    7.ਛਾਡਿ ਸਿਆਨਪ ਸਗਲੀ ਮਨਾ ॥ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਸਚੁ ਧਨਾ ॥
    From above it is clear that we have to Quit/ Renounce all clever tricks .ਛੋਡਿ ਸਗਲ ਸਿਆਣਪਾ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥: Give up all your clever mental tricks, and lovingly attune yourself to the True Shabad. ||1||Pause|| (sggs 51).
    One has to give up all mental tricks whether Oukati Siaanap (“ਉਕਤਿ ਸਿਆਨਪ”) or Param Siaanap and become/attain innocent love because:-
    ਭੋਲੇ ਭਾਇ ਮਿਲੇ ਰਘੁਰਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੬॥Through innocent love, the Lord is met. ||4||6||
    Bhul Chuk Maff Karni

  5. Prakash s Bagga

    referring to the Quote as
    ਭੋਲੇ ਭਾਇ ਮਿਲੇ ਰਘੁਰਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੬॥Through innocent love, the Lord is met. ||4||6||
    I feel this can be interpreted as
    O INNOCENT,THE LORD IS MET THRU LOVE.
    Bhul Chuk Maaf

  6. Lakhvir Singh

    (ਉਕਤਿ ਸਿਆਨਪ )Oukati Siaanap is also the influence of Kaal. The extent of this siaanap can be such that it can fool one that they have reached the bhavsagar (mind ocean)and began to cross it. However, the size of this sianaap and it’s sheer weight, composing of haumai,ego, will never let anyone even float on the bhavsagar, let alone begin to cross it.

    • Thank you Bhai Sahib Ji for sharing!
(sggs 654).

  7. Prakash S Bagga

    A quote from SGGS ji worth sharing in this context as
    “RE MUN SUNDER APNAA HARiNAAMu MAJITHE RANG REE
    CHHAAD SIYANAP CHATUREE JAAN GOPALEH SANG REE”
    One should leave wordly CLEVERNESS and KNOW THAT GOPAL HARi is always with you.
