The Gurbani indicates that spiritual unfoldment does not come easily. The majority of beings (Jivaatmaas) struggle through the material world (Jagat or Sansaar) and repeatedly pass through stages of Sukh and Dukh (joy and sorrow, etc.) without pausing to think of the purpose of life.

THE GURBANI SAYS JUDGE YOURSELF, NOT OTHERS
ਨਾਨਕ ਪਰਖੇ ਆਪ ਕਉ ਤਾ ਪਾਰਖੁ ਜਾਣੁ ॥: Nanak parkhe aap kayu ta paarakh jaan: O Nanak, if someone judges himself, only then is he known as a real judge (sggs 148). ਇਸੁ ਮਨ ਕਉ ਕੋਈ ਖੋਜਹੁ ਭਾਈ ॥: Is mann kayu koee khojo bhaaee: Let each person examine his own mind, O brother (sggs 1128).

RABID DOG AND GREED
Greed is one of “five” evil passions (Bikaars, negative inclinations of the instinctive mind, etc.) mentioned in the Gurbani. The other four are: lust, anger, attachment, and pride.
