All Know How to Get Trapped

The Gurbani indicates that everyone knows many ways of being trapped or getting trapped (or caught in Maya’s snare, doubts, inner pollution, worldly bondage, falsehood, desires, Karamkaand, Bikaar-lust, anger, greed…).

In the same breath, the Gurbani tells us that “hardly anyone knows how to escape”.

In other words, we all are good at “ਫਾਸਨ ਕੀ ਬਿਧਿ” (Phaasan Kee Bidhi), but the majority of us are no good at “ਛੂਟਨ ਕੀ” (ਬਿਧਿ-Chhootan Kee Bidhi – escaping from numerous traps of this enchanting world.

(Phaasan Kee Bidhi) = How to be trapped; how to be snared; how to be subjugated; how to be entangled; ਕਾਬੂ ਆ ਜਾਣਾਂ, ਫੰਧੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੈਣਾਂ, ਫਸਣ ਦਾ ਢੰਗ, ਫਸਣ ਦਾ ਤਰੀਕਾ, ਫਸਣ ਦਾ ਰਸਤਾ, ਫਸਣ ਦੀਆਂ ਕਰਤੂਤਾਂ, ਫਸਣ ਦੇ ਕਰਮਕਾਂਡ, and so on.

(Chhootan Kee) = How to be Free; how to be Liberated (Mukat); how to escape; how to be got rid of; how to get out; how to be emancipated;

: Phaasan kee bidhi sabhu ko-oojaanai chhootan kee iku koee: Everyone knows how to be caught, but rarely anyone knows how to escape (sggs 331).

Why the majority of us only know how to get trapped, but don’t know how to get out? As repeatedly indicated by the Gurbani, it’s because of our desires:

: Maya jaal pasaariaa bheetar chog banaai. Trisnaa pankhee phaasiaa nikis n paae maai: Maya has spread out her net and in it has placed the bait The bird of desire (instinctive mind, ਜੀਵ-ਪੰਖੀ, etc.) is caught, and cannot find any escape, O (my) mother (sggs 50).

Whatever takes place at the organized religious places, in most part (if not all), is nothing but “ਫਾਸਨ ਕੀ ਬਿਧਿ” (Phaasan Kee Bidhi)!

It is repeatedly pointed out by the Gurbani that there are only two different groups of people living together on earth: the Gurmukhs and the Manmukhs. The Gurbani asks us to become the Gurmukhs. Why? Because only the Gurmukh (Spiritual Being, Aatam-Giaanee, Vivekee, the follower of Truth through the Gurmat…) knows how to be Liberated. The Manmukh is opposite of the Gurmukh (i.e., foolish, self-willed, the follower of untruth or falsehood…).

: Manmukhi sootaa Maya mohi piaari. Gurmukhi jaage gun giaan beechaari:  (sggs 160).

So, the Gurbani wants us to become the Gurmukh.

Contrary to the Gurmukh, the Manmukh only knows how to get trapped : Nanak manmukh bandh hai gurmukh mukati karaae ||4||3||, sggs 559).

Consequently, as indicated in the Gurbani, the Gurmukhs depart from this world reaping the Real Gain (ਲਾਹਾ-Spiritual Benefit or Profit-ਲਾਭ, ਨਫਾ…) in this birth, while the Manmukhs depart loosing even their original capital – ਅਸਲਾ, ਮੁੱਢ, ਰਾਸ, ਪੂੰਜੀ, birth… : Gurmukh laahaa lai gaye manmukh chale mool gavaai jeeou ||19||, sggs 74).
