THE GURU: NECESSITY OF THE TRUE GURU

Without the Guru, there is utter darkness;
without the Guru, understanding does not come (sggs 1399).
<><><><>

As discussed in other parts of this Gurbani Reflection, the Guru's main business is to impart Giaan (Divine Knowledge) and, thereby, remove the veil of ignorance of the Mool (Source, Origin...). Such True Guru is ever situated within all. In fact He is the only thing that is Real, everything else is a projection of His Nature. And He is none other than the All-pervading Consciousness that vibrates, creates, guides, controls, directs, sustains, and animates every particle of the cosmos.

: Satigur meraa sadaa sadaa n aavai n jaai. Oh abinaasee purakh a sabh mahi rahiaa samaa ||13||: My Satguru is Everlasting (Immortal, etc.); He neither comes nor goes (i.e., beyond birth and death). He Himself is the Imperishable Being (Eternal, Parmeshar, Parmaatam, Prabh, Mool, Jot, etc.) who, pervades among all ||13|| (sggs 759).
: Aadi ant ekai avataaraa. Soee Guroo samjhiou hamaaraa ||38||: From the very beginning to end, God is the only incarnation. It should be known to all that such God is our Guroo ||38|| (Guru Gobind Singh Jee, Chaupai, Dasam Granth 1466).

On account of conditionings, our mind is not prepared to know the Mool (Source, Origin, Jot...), but the Giaan of the Gurbani (Gurmat-Aatam Giaan, Divine Knowledge or Spiritual Wisdom of the Gur-Shabad...) can help make it ready. The Giaan of the Gurbani helps us Understand the IKK or One (ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਇਕ ਦੇ ਦਰਸਨ ਕਰਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ...), and prepares us to become One with This IKK (1-One).

The Gurbani also wants us to remember that the One (ਪਰਮੇਸਰ, ਮਹਾਂਪੁਰਖ, Lord...) is Greater (than all the Granths...) from where all the Granths have origininated.

: Bedu badaa ki jahaan te aaiaa ॥ : Is the Veda (ਆਦਿਕ ਧਰਮ-ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ-i.e., all religious texts or Granths) greater, or the Place from where it came? ॥ (sggs 331).
: Ded kateb Sansaar habhaa hoon baaharaa: (He-ਪਰਮੇਸਰ ਮਹਾਂਪੁਰਖ...) is beyond the world, Vedas, and Kateb (quran...). (sggs 397).

As discussed in the previous Parts, the Mool and the Satguru are one and the same. They are also synonymous to many other terms such as Aatam, Saadh, Sant, Sajjan, Sahib, Mahaanpurash, Maansarovar, Shabad-Surti, Intuitive Wisdom, Holy Shrine, Philosopher's Stone, and so on. It was also discussed that the Satguru resides in the core of our Inner Being. One who has realized Him within is happy, inwardly and outwardly. Baabaa Nanak reveals this Truth to us as follows:

: Bhoolee bhoolee mai phiree paadhar kahai na koi. Pooshahu jaai siaaniaa dukhu kaatai meraa koi. Satgur saachaa mani vasai ut hee thaai: Confused and deluded (for a long time - ਬਹੁਤ ਚਿਰ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝੀ ਹੋਈ), I wander around, but no one shows me the straight Way (right or clear Path - ਪੱਧਰਾ ਰਾਹ). I keep wandering and asking the clever people, if there is there anyone who can rid me of my suffering. If the true Satguru abides within the mind, then God (Saajan, Sajjan, etc.,) is (also) seen at the same place (that is, within - ਭਾਵ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਭੀ ਓਸੇ ਥਾਂ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ) (sggs 1087).
: Nanak saahibu mani vasai sachee vadiaaee: O Nanak, the Ture Saahib dwells within the mind, and true is His glory (sggs 420).
: Gursikhaa andar satgur vartai: The True Guru pervades inside His Gur-Sikhs (sggs 312).
: Sabh kishu ghar mahi baahari naahee... (sggs 102).

The Satguru is called "Baseeth" in the Gurbani; which literally means middleman, matchmaker (Vicholaa), intermediary, connector, link, mediator or advocate. This is just a way of saying that the Satguru, or the Mool, is really a junction point between matter and Spirit, between mortality (death) and Immortality, between time and Timeless, between dual and Non-dual, between ephemeral and Eternal, between material reality and Virtual Reality, and so on. In other words, He is a link between Jeeva (individual being) and the Pure Consciousness.

: Vishhurriaa mele prabhoo har daragah kaa baseeth: He is the Baseeth (Mediator, etc.) of the God's Court; he reunites the separated ones with God (sggs 957 ).

To put it in our relative language, the Dharma upgrades our nature from "animal-man" to human being. In turn, our human being unfolds to us the Satguru within and we become Spiritual Being, whereby the Satguru unfolds to us the Transcendental form of the Shabad or Naam and we become Self-realized. In turn our Self-realization links us to God-realization, or Pure Awareness.

: Poorai Satgur Sabad sunaaiaa. Trai gun mete chauthe chit laaiaa: The Perfect Satguru has revealed the Shabad; it eradicates the three qualitied Maya, and attunes the consciousness to the Fourth State, Chauthaa Pad (sggs 231).
: Gur seveejai Amrit peejai jis laavahi sahaji dhiaano: (O Lord, only that person) Serves the Guru and drinks in the Amrit (Amrit of Your Naam) whom You causes to meditate intuitively

Therefore, realization of True Guru (ਸਚ ਦਾ ਗਿਆਨ...) within is essential to remove the veil of ignorance of our True Nature (Joti-Svaroop); doubts (ਭਰਮ), and so on. In other words, the awakening of the Satguru within is must for attaining Gur-Prasaad (Grace of the Giaan)...

: Je saou chandaa oogavahi sooraj charrahi hajaar. Ete chaanan hodiaan Gur bin ghor andhaar ||2||: If hundred moons were to rise, and thousand suns were to rise, even with such light, there would still be pitch darkness (i.e., ignorance) without the "Gur" (the Divine Wisdom of the Gurbani...). ||2|| (sggs 463).
: Gur sevaa tae naaou paaiaa vuthaa andar aai: By Serving the Guru, the Name (Giaan...) is Realized, which comes to dwell deep within (sggs 427).

A True Guru is the Truth Himself. In fact, it turns out that only the Guru is awake; the rest of the world is asleep in attachment to Maya. The mind of an average individual is engrossed in Bikaars; like an drunkard elephant. The Guru-Shabad is the rod  which controls the mind-elephant, and shows it the Way of the Truth (ਸਚ).

: Manu kuncharu peelaku guroo giaanu kunddaa jah khinche tah jaai. Nanak hasatee kunde baahraa phiri phiri ujharri paai ||2||: The mind is the elephant, the Guroo is the elephant-driver, and Knowledge (Gur-Giaan) is the whip. Wherever the Guroo drives the mind, it goes. O Nanak, without the whip (of Knowledge or Giaan), the elephant (of the mind) repeatedly wanders into the wilderness (of Maya). ||2|| (sggs 516).

Upon becoming Mool-realized with the help of the Aatam-Giaan, desires, egoism, fear and doubts disappear. Intuitive Peace, Poise, Bliss, come to abide in the mind. The True Guru is served and realized through the Gur-Shabad (Naam-Giaan). Those who search in the Gur-Shabad with conviction and understanding, find Him! His Instruction, Teaching or System is hidden in the Gurbani (Giaan of the Gurbani). One understands it by becoming a Gurmukh (Spiritual Being...).

: Sabadu Guroo surti dhuni chelaa ||: The Shabad is (my) Guroo. (My) "ਸੁਰਤਿ ਧੁਨਿ" or focusing of Consciousness is the disciple (of This Guroo) (sggs 943).
: Su sabad nirantar nij ghar aashai tribhavan jot su sabad lahai: Incessantly, this Shabad is in its Nij Ghar (ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ-in its Own Real Home...); (it is) through this Shabad (one) seeks (God's) Light that pervades the three worlds (sggs 945).
: Gur kai Sabad pashaaneeyai dukh haumai vichahu jaai: Gur-Shabad leads us to attain the Guru, and the disease of pride is eradicated from Within (sggs 35).
: Giaanee hovai su gurmukh boojhai saachee sifati salaahaa hae: One who is Spiritually Wise, understands himself by becoming a Gurmukh; he praises the True One (sggs 1056).
