(sggs 797).

An another part of this Gurbani Reflection (The Guru: Who Is The Satguru In Sikhi?) looks at who in the Sikhi is the Satguru (True Guru). Part (The Guru: Meaning & Business of The Guru) reflects on Satguru's meaning and His real function. The Gurbani has repeatedly revealed to us that the Satguru is none other than the Mool (Source, Origin...) situated in the nucleus of our very Being within. Which brings us to this Reflection: how can the Satguru be known or Realized within?

In utter ignorance of the Mool (Source, Origin...), we keep searching for the Eternal Factor (the Lord, Self, Satguru, etc.) wrong places, just as the deer keeps searching for musk in the bushes! In vague understanding of the Spiritual matters, some argue one can find God only through worshipping a Satguru in a physical form. The truth of the matter is that God does not need to be found because he was never lost! He is always present within as All-knowing Presence (Antaryaamee). As the Gurbani roars, He is ever Realized. Because, in reality, we are That ("Soham"). In fact we cannot even breathe without Him; because nothing can exist in the absence of this Supreme Self, the Life Force! Every human being is an embodiment of this One Divine Factor.

: Satgur meraa sadaa sadaa n aavai n jaai. Ohu abinaasee purakhu hai sabh mahi rahiaa samaai ||13||: My Satguru is Everlasting (Immortal, etc.); He neither comes nor goes (i.e., beyond birth and death). He Himself is the Imperishable Being (Eternal, Parmeshar, Parmaatam, Prabh, Mool, Jot, etc.) who, pervades among all ||13|| (sggs 759).
: Gur paramesar ek hai sabh mahi rahiaa samaai ||: The Guru and the Transcendent Lord are one and the same, pervading and permeating amongst all (sggs 53).

When he knows himself (ਆਪਣੇ ਅਸਲੇ ਦੀ ਪਛਾਣ, the Reality of his Being, his True Nature, etc.), only then he comes to know the One (All-pervading Truth). ||4|| (sggs 855).
: Aatam cheenai su tatt beechaarae: One who understands his own Soul, contemplates the essence of Reality (sggs 224).
: Sachaa saahib mani vasai vasiaa mani soi: The True Saahib (God) dwells within the mind; the mind that realizes this blends into Him (sggs 420).

: Pranvati Nanak giaanee kaisaa hoi. Aapu pashaanai boojhai soi: Prays Nanak, of what nature is the Giaanee (the Wise one, the knower of the Truth...)? (A true Giaanee is he who) recognizes his (Mool-ਮੂਲ, Source, Origin, Essential Nature, etc.), such (Giaanee-ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਅਸਲੇ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ) Understands God (sggs 25).
: Iou kahai Nanaku man toon joti saroopu hai apanaa moolu pashaanu ||5|| (sggs 441).

: Aatam mahi paarbraham lahante: Within the Soul, find the Supreme Lord (sggs 276).

The reason we are unaware of of our Ture Self within is that we have confounded Him with the physical body, senses, mind, intellect, worldly objects, and so on. Consequently, under the spell of the bewitching Maya we search Him in the external things. This is the ignorance (illusion or wrong identity) scriptures so much talk about.

: Baahar bhekh na paaeeai prabh antarajaamee: By wearing religious robes outwardly, God is not found, for He is the Inner-knower—Anatarajaamee (sggs 1099).
: Bhekhi prabhu na labhaee vin sachee sikham: God can be found by true instructions, not by religious garbs (sggs 1099).
: Bahu bhekh keeyaa dehee dukh deeaa: The more one wears religious robes, the more pain he causes his body (sggs 467).
Baahar bhekh n kaahoo bheen: God is not impressed (pleased) by outward display (sggs 269).

What went wrong? Apparently, right after the Tenth Mahal (over the past three hundred years or so), the selfish Mahant, Pujaaree or Priest, Paathee, Ragi, Bhai, so called Giaanee or Kathaakaar, and people running the Gurdawara buildings and huge cash funds have tainted the Baabaa Nanak's Divine Teaching. This apparently has created or added more confusion. For example, as discussed before, the Gurbani (SGGS) points to the Akaal Purakh as our only Satguru, however, these greedy people have been telling us otherwise. The result is the coming into being of many competing splinter groups or sects in the Sikhism. Apparently, these splinters groups do not have anybody to tell them either as to who the Satguru is! "Blind leads blind" has become the norm.

As indicated in the Gurbani, the Satguru is Unborn and Undying ("Purukh Ajanmaa" or "Abinaasee Purakh"). Now, what is that process by which we can re-establish our link with This "Purukh Ajanmaa"? The process for awakening the Satguru within has been clearly delineated in the Gurbani. The limbs of the process include the following: becoming a Gurmukh (Spiritual Being), engaging in undivided Naam-Simran (Shabad-Surti, Shabad-Vichaar, Giaan...), avoiding Karamkaand (worldliness, unmeaning rituals, peculiar robes, etc.), becoming one with the Teaching or Wisdom of the Gurbani, and living a Spiritual Life of absolute contentment (Sat Santokh), truthfulness...

: Satgur pooraa merai naal: The Perfect Satguru is always with me (sggs 618).
: Gur merai sang sadaa hai naale ||: My Guru is always with me, near at hand (sggs 394).
: Gurmukhi jindoo jap Naam karammaa. Mati maataa mati jeeou Naam mukh Raamaa. Santokh pitaa kar Gur Purakh ajanmaa. Vadbhaagee mil Raamaa ||1||: O my Soul, as Gurmukh, do this deed: Understand Naam (Giaan of the Gurbani or Gurmat...) through the Shabad (-Vichaar) . Make Gurmat your mother, that it may teach you to keep God’s Name in your mouth. Let contentment be your father; and the Primal Being, who is beyond birth, be the Guru. By great good fortune, you will meet with God ||1|| (sggs 172-173).
: Ham moorakh mugadh agiaan mati sharnaagat purukh ajanmaa: I am foolish, idiotic and ignorant; I seek Your Sanctuary, O Primal Being, You are beyond birth (sggs 799).
: Jaise jal mahi (sggs 938).
As revealed by these verses, in order to awaken the Satguru within, first we need to become a Gurmukh. But, what is a Gurmukh? Is it a name of a person? Is it a social status or title? Or, is it one's external appearance? None of these, thunders the Gurbani. To become a Gurmukh means: the Gurmukh is linked to his Mool within (ਮੂਲ, Source, Origin Truth...), and ever remains so; he is contented in all situations (Sach Santokhee); he is the follower of the Truth; his mind is linked to Antar-Aatmaa; his Akal (ਅਕਲ , wisdom, intellect, reason, etc., follows the Gurbani; he restrains his mind instead of following his mind; his state is that of "ਇਕ ਮਨਿ ਇਕ ਚਿਤਿ " - Ik Mani Ik Chiti; he is detached in the midst of Maya - ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ ਉਦਾਸੀ; he is established in Viveka-budhi - ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰਮਤ ਦੀ ਪੂਰੀ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੈ; he knows all the "Way of the soul" ("ਜਾਨੈ ਆਤਮ ਕੀ ਰਹਤ", ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ, ਅਮਲੀ ਜੀਵਨ, ਹੁਕਮੀ ਜੀਵਨ); he is Jeevan Mukat (living Liberated or Enlightened); he is Aatam or Brahm Giaanee...

The Gurbani reveals to us that, with the union of this "mother" (Shabad-Giaan or Self-knowledge) and "father" (contentment), their will be the birth of "Purakh Ajanmaa" within. And this Purakh Ajanmaa is the Satguru; the "Joti-Svaroopa" or the True Image of the Absolute Being. Since God, Self or the Satguru are synonymous, what it means is that the Transcendental Being has placed Himself as the Satguru hidden deep in the Heart-lotus within (or Spiritual-Center).

So long this "Purakh Ajanmaa" remains dormant within, we cannot expect to experience the Essence of the Divinity. The Gurbani shows us the way to Realize:

  • ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਮਤਿ ਆਵੈ ਸੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਨਾ ॥ ਇਹ ਬਾਣੀ ਜੋ ਜੀਅਹੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਰਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥: (One who) imbbes (accepts, ਭਰੋਸਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਣਾ, ਯਕੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਣਾ...) the Wisdom (intellect, understanding, sense, Bibek-Budhi, ਅਕਲ, ਸਿੱਖਿਆ...) of the Satigur's Teachings, is absorbed into the Satigur (he merges or permeates into the Satigur's Teaching-ਉਪਦੇਸ...). He who heartily Realizes this Bani (ਇਸ ਉਪਦੇਸ ਰੂਪ ਬਾਣੀ ਨੂੰ), within his mind abides the Hari Naam (i.e., always dwells in Hari Naam within-ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿਣਾ). ||1|| Pause. (sggs 797).

Awakening or Realization of the Satguru within is essentially synonymous to many other terms such as Realization of the Inner Satsang, Self-realization, Soul-consciousness or Pure Awareness, Saadhoos, Sajjan Sant, Shabad or Naam, Divinity, Amrit or Amrit Dhaaraa (Immortality), Anand (Bliss), Anahad Dhuni, Anahad Naad, Anahad Bani, Anhata Shabad, Panch Shabad, Gur Charan, Gur Moorati, Sahaj Avasthaa, Brahm Giaan, Gobind Gajjiyaa, Sahib, Tenth Gate (Dasam Duaar, Chauthaa Pada or Turiyaa Avasthaa), and so on.

The Lord ("Sachaa Sahib") is True, so is His Name. He is neither the subject of any ideology, nor philosophical speculations, nor material logic nor mundane cleverness. That Pure Being can only be caught with equally subtle substance: Shabad-Surti or Naam-consciousness. As taught by Baabaa Nanak in Japji Sahib as well as in rest of the Gurbani, the "Sachaa Naam" of the "Sachaa Sahib" must be spoken ("Bhaakhiyaa") infinitely ("Apaar") with love ("Bhaayu"). Then and only then the "Purakh Ajanmaa" will awaken (Pargat) within.

Majority of us (over 99.9 percent), however, do not want to do this; consequently, we unavailingly look for Him in external images, pictures, religious books, tangible and physical things, habitual reading or hearing of the scriptures, music ("Raag-Raagni"), embodied gurus and so on. As a result, in the end, we loose all and depart wailing and mourning. The Truth is very Subtle, Pure and Sublime; hence, it cannot be caught by such mental circus of ours. Only "Sache Bhagats" or true devotees (Gurmukhs) can Realize Him!

: Saachaa sahib saach naai bhaakhiaa bhaaou apaar: True is God and His Name — speak it with infinite love (sggs 2).
  • ਸੋ ਕਿਉ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਇ ॥ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਾਚੈ ਨਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ So kiou visrai meree maai. Saachaa Saahib saachaa Naai ||1||Rahhaou||: O my mother (Budhi, intellect...), True is God and His Name; How can He be forgotten ||1||Pause|| (sggs 9).
Hence, the crux of the whole matter is to attain the Intuitive Understanding of the Gurbani (Giaan). As the Gurbani says, if one who understands, realizes and comprehends what he reads and studies, in the end he will realize that Eternal Factor dwells deep within his nucleus. Only the Gurmukh understands it; thus, he knows that without being established in the Self this world is a mirage.
: Sahib meraa sadaa hai disai Shabad kamaai. Oh aouhaanee kade naahi n aavai n jaai: My master is eternal. He is seen by practicing the Shabad. He never perishes, He does not come and go - He neither takes birth nor does he die (sggs 509).
: Gur parmesar Nanak bhetio saachai Sabadi niberaa: Says Nanak: I have met the Guru, the Transcendental Lord, through His True Shabad, I am set free (sggs 878).
The Satguru cannot be Realized by scholarship. As Baabaa Nanak declares in the Gurbani: "You may read and read loads of books... - Parhi parhi gadee ladeeahi parhi parhi bhareeahi saath ..." (sggs 466).
: Boojhai naahee ayk sudhaakhar oh saglee jhaakh jhakhaa-ee-ai: Those who do not understand the One Pure Word, utter total nonsense (sggs 216).
: Slok M: 3|| Parhnaa gunanaa sansaar kee karr hai andar trisnaa vikaar ...: Slok M: 3. Reading and studying (have become) just worldly pursuits, (but still) greed and corruption remain present within. Reading in egotism, all have grown weary; through the love of duality (Maya), they are ruined. He alone is educated, and he alone is a wise Pandit, who reflects and contemplates the Gur-Shabad (i.e., consider that person Pandit - ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਸਮਝੋ). He searches within himself, and finds the True Essence within; he attains the Door of Salvation. He finds God, the Treasure of Excellence, and contemplates with Sahaj (ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ, Natural State of Being, etc.). Blessed is the trader (of Naam, the Name), O Nanak, who, as a Gurmukh (Spiritual Being, etc.), takes the Name as his only Support ||1|| (sggs 650).
In order to attain Intuitive Understanding of the Gurbani, one has to go beyond its letter-form (or Akhar) and the paper its written on! If that does not happen, then reading of the Gurbani (or any other religious texts for that matter) is nothing but a Karamkaand, worldly entanglements or ritual. Accordingly, the Gurbani has repeatedly warned us against any such "Fokat" undertaking. Because Karamkaands only separate man from God, and bind his consciousness to the material entanglements such as lust, anger, greed, emotional attachment, self-conceit, enviousness and stubborn mindedness; resulting in his repeated suffering.
: Nanak Kaagad lakh manaa ...: O Nanak, if I had hundreds of thousands of stacks of paper, and if ink were never to fail me, and if my pen were able to move like the wind, and if I were to read and recite and embrace love for God—even so, I could not estimate Your Value. How can I describe the Greatness of Your Name? (sggs 15).
: Japahu ta eko naamaa. Awar niraaphal kaamaa: Understand One God's Name. All other actions are fruitless (sggs 728)
Knowledge of the Gurbani (Aatam-Giaan...) is the destroyer of ignorance of the Mool (Source, Origin...). However, the destruction of ignorance will only take place if we understand the Gurbani's true gist, and, then, more importantly, live by it ("Truth in action"). Otherwise any ritualistic reading or worship will do no good. In reality, what happens is that people (misled by the greedy and crafty priest-class) totally ignore the Giaan contained in the scriptures; instead, people literally start worshipping them like any idle. That's ignorance.
: Paahan neer pakhaaleeai bhaaee jal mahi boodahi thehi ||6||: The stone idles are washed with water, O Siblings of Destiny, but they just sink in the water ||6|| (sggs 637).
: Gur kai Sabad pashaaneeyai dukh haumai vichahu jaai: Gur-Shabad leads us to attain the Guru, and the disease of pride is eradicated from Within (sggs 35).
  • ਨਾਨਕ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਮਾਰਣੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਇ ॥੨॥: Nanak Maya kaa maaran Sabad hai gurmukh paaiaa jaai ||2||: O Nanak, Shabad is the killer of Maya (ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਮੁਕਾਣ ਦਾ ਵਸੀਲਾ), and it is obtained by becoming the Gurmukh ||2|| (sggs 853).

The Gurbani tells us that the best substitute for the time-bound (embodied or Deh Dhaaree) gurus or idle worshiping is cultivation of Shabad-Surti, love and longing for God's Name (Aatam-Giaan...), undivided association with Sat (Truth) within and the Gurmukhs without, and so on.

However, our selfishness, corruption, desires and fear inhibit us from developing these Spiritual qualities. Consequently, in a futile bid to satisfy the ever expanding false ego (Haumai), many end up worshipping the time-bound objects for the sake of maintaining some superficial religion in life! This is self-defeating.

In essence, the greatest Satguru is the Inner Self (Aatamaan, Antarguru ), the Supreme Teacher. We must strive to Realize this Truth. He alone will take us to Complete Spiritual-realization, and he alone will meet us at the end of the journey within. There is nothing "there yonder" which is not within. We must confide in this Eternal Factor with conviction, and we must constantly be engaged in Shabad-Vichaar to avoid any obstacles and delays.

: Tat niranjan joti sabaaee soham bhed na koee jeeou. Aprampar Parbrahm permesar Nanak Gur miliyaa soyee jeeou ||5||11||: The essence, the immaculate Lord, the Light of all - I am He and He is me - there is no difference. Nanak has met with his Guru who is Infinite Transcendent and Supreme Lord ||5||11|| (sggs 599).
: Jinee aatam cheeniaa parmaatam soee: Those who understand their own Soul, are themselves Parmaatam (sgg 421).
